    When I logged, the guys in the woods cutting the trees used the 044 Stihls and I worked the landing using an 056 Stihl. I grew to love both of those. The 044 were much better in the woods because they were lighter.

    "I love showing you this stuff"... and I love watching it. Like you said, somebody has to show you these things and I've no one else around to show me. Show me as much as you can, even when you think it's mundane or even boring. For instance, in my experience working on old saws is, by percentage of time spent, mostly cleaning. Show us how you clean these saws up, because you're probably way better at it than me!

    I have this same old 038 magnum saw and I also have the 044 as well. I still reach for the 038 every time I use one of them. The saw was given to me back in the 1980 s and was told they couldn't keep it running. I put a carburetor on it and I have never spent another dime on it other than bars and chains. I also clear lots so the saw sees a lot of working time every week. It's one of the best as far as I'm concerned.

    I have an 038 Mag waiting for a thread repair on the spark plug hole - at least that meant it was cheap to buy! There are loads more 308 and 038 Supers around in the UK and Ireland that the Magnums. Stay clear of aftermarket air filters as the choke butterfly is built into them and the aftermarket filters can leave you pulling your hair out when trying to tune it.... Aftermarket dual port mufflers work well and remove the inner baffles in the muffler or just drill a few holes in the baffles. Makes a big difference. Bing and Tillotson carbs are interchangable plus Tillotson are still in production. EDIT - you covered the air filter and choke issues in the video.

    Nice video Tinman. Pressure testing the saw is always a good idea as well, I have seen many of these old Stihls that the case gasket leak, alot of times into the oil tank. I have found that my 038 Mag II with full wrap yet heavier than the 044 balances better with a longer light bar. I learned a few things about port shapes working on 038s. I really like the 038 mags, they were well built saws. The only real downfall as with all Stihls even the new ones today is filtration.

    The 038 and 028, in a lot of seemed to be some of the last of the "pro-sumer" saws Stihl sold in North America. In the same way that the echo 590 is the cheaper, slightly older technology variant of the 620p the 028/038 used a little bit older tech but hung around to be sold as a cheaper option alongside the 024/026, 034/36, and 044 that eventually replaced them. They're cool saws, especially the 038 Mag2 but I'll still take my 044 10/10 times if only for the fact that I can't stand those forward facing chain adjuster screws lol.

    Good nostalgia with those old power saws. I don't work on so many these days but always throw a new set of crankcase seals in one thats been laid up, even if they pass a pressure test its pretty common for them to develop some degree of leak when being put back into service, it makes the difference between a saw that runs 100% to a saw that's slightly off and harder to tune.

    • @tinmanssaws
      @tinmanssaws  Před 2 lety

    I got a free 038 Magnum in a box today in several pieces that's been sitting in a shed for at least 4 years, was planning to use it for parts but looked at it a bit and decided to see if I could get it running. Cylinder had a couple lines in it but was noticeably better than this. Spent about 15-20 minutes working on it and eventually got it to fire up. Missing a couple things but it runs great. Think I'm going to pick up an 8 tooth sprocket for it and run a fairly small bar just to do firewood, I don't do a ton of big cutting and I can borrow my dad's 064 or 084 if I do wind up with a big tree lol. This is the first saw I actually own myself, probably not going to do a ton of performance stuff to it since it's nice having something reliable to cut with.
    Edit: I think the 2 bolts on the filter holds the carb on on these. That's how mine is and snugs up well. No gap, carb doesn't seem loose when running.

Got it mostly taken apart (almost 1:00 in the morning for me), and will take the piston off tomorrow. I'm going to get a hyway cylinder and pop-up piston for it. All of the bearings feel good on it, and it doesn't show any discoloration from overheating. I think the guy who owned it just ran it hard while the metal was cold. I'd almost guarantee that it has never seen a cleaning in it's nearly 6 years of service either.

    I got a roper tractor out of a shed this summer that had been there atleast 10 years. The gas was that bad, and what was in the fuel line was basically gelled. Luckily it was ethanol free, but I don’t think it would have made it one more year and recovered.

    Just picked up a 038 Magnum. It came with a 20inc bar. For carrying in the 4wd and tree clearing work can these saws run a longer bar or is it best run with a 20inc? (located in SE Australia where the gum trees are hardwood fyi)

    How do you like the Hyway cylinders? I bought the meteor kits from wolf creek one for a 066 and 044. The second my bit hit the edge of the port the platting chipped off like nothing big pieces. Kind of sucks but got it handled. I had to really go slow and make sure the bit was going into the cylinder while cutting and not away pulling the platting away from the cylinder if that makes sense. I had to use single cut bits and Diamond burrs. It was a good learning experience.

    I know that stanky, skunky fuel smell well lol. I did an old 45+ year old Stihl 020AV that the tank had the fuel that was probably over 30 years old maybe older. The tank had a Bubble gum like goo in it. It ran on the leftover fuel in the carb for a few seconds it actually reved up and idled on a tiny prime on that old fuel 😱
