    I've done about two dozen paper paintings like this. It is a nice look. I always stress out if it will adhere good enough but when I lift off the plastic, it's like opening a Christmas gift! Always looks great. But I deal with not as much strength when working on large pieces like the one in the video. It can be a workout for some of us. Great video, David. Would love to see the finished piece after it dries.

      Ms Mermaid, you can I suppose but I don't. I do use a little gloss gel over my dark values to make them pop. Gel medium should not be used as a finish over the entire painting if that is what you are asking. You should use a coat of varnish instead.

    Hi David,
    I would have loved to see the next step which is removing the plastic. What if the glue squeezes out? you said it doesnt stick to plastic but what happens to it? Also the corner looked like it was curling up, does it naturally settle down as its drying? Im planning on gluing canva paper to a wood panel and its not super flat, its curled up a bit, do i need to do anything to make sure it adheres and doesnt curl in some places?

    • @davidm.kesslerfineart1717
      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  Před 5 lety +2

      Brian Gehring, as I said in the video, if you leave the adhesive 1/2" or so from the edge of the paper you don't have to worry about the adhesive squirting out. If it does, it dries clear. The corners sometimes curl up a bit - you can add a bit more adhesive, but once you turn it over and put the weight on the surface, it sets up beautifully.

    thanks for your video. I have done 4 acrylic plein air paintings based on fresh floral bouquets this summer in my garage. They are 6 foot by 4 foot paintings. Would you recommend this say technic for pieces that large ? I over painted them so that they will fit on 6 foot by 4 foot cradled boards, so I'll need to trim edges, if that makes sense. I wasn't planning on keeping an edge like you did , but it probably would look great, IF I get them on straight. thoughts ?

    • @davidm.kesslerfineart1717
      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  Před 3 lety

      It’s completely up to you as the painter. If you painted them on paper (you didn’t say what the substrate was) then you must have had this as your way to present them, right? I didn’t even know you could get paper that big. Anyway, yes you can do it but it will be difficult to do. That’s why anything big I just paint on canvas then the presentation is already done.

      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  Před 6 lety +1

      PJ Martin, thanks for watching. Happy to hear your paintings are improving! The adhesive I use is an acrylic gel medium. You can find it at any online art supply vendor (Dick Blick, Jerrys Artarama). It is found with the acrylic paints and mediums. The gel medium is water based, so I simply rinse the brush with water. Watercolor is completely different than acrylic and the surface needs to be protected. I have heard of many products that people have used to fix the surface of the watercolors, but I don’t personally know if they work, so I cannot recommend anything to you. You might want to Google it to find out some options.
