    Amazing to see the bare-metal body that last saw the light of day in the body shop where it was fabricated nearly 69 years ago. Theoretically, it could have been built in the fall of '54. Well done, men.

    • @georgedennison3338
      @georgedennison3338 Před rokem +5

      In the '80's, I was co-owner of a sandblasting biz. It took 5-6 hours to blast a body, correctly. You have to keep the pressure at a minimum & not directly blast at 90⁰ to prevent panel warpage.
      This means going slowly. Later, newer types of blasting media helped prevent warpage, though I was out of the biz by then.
      We always tried to collect small blasting jobs, & save them to do as the same time as bodies or frames. By piling the smalls on the frames/bodies, the overspray did a lot of the work, reducing material & time.
      We charged $150/ hr in the early '80's for blasting. Gas/diesel was between $1-$2 a gallon & media was ~$3.00 / 50#'s.
      Hope that helps. If you have a body blasted, shop on experience & attention to detail. NOT on price.

    • @isaakwelch3451
      @isaakwelch3451 Před rokem +1

      Sand blasting leaves the potential for panel warpage and wont be able to get to every little area. With acid dipping there's the potential for thinning metal and some believe the acid is never truly gone. both have their pros and cons.

    • @georgedennison3338
      @georgedennison3338 Před rokem

      @@isaakwelch3451 warpage from sandblasting is not inherently caused by sandblasting, but by inexperienced or inept blasters.
      I have personally, and have had employees blast dozens of bodies, many dozens of body parts & other items of various metals as thin, or thinner than auto body parts & never caused warpage.
      I will agree there are some places on a body where blasting cannot reach, but I found it to be an exception rather than a rule.
      The few areas we found were mitigated through spot usage of rust desolving chems.
      Liquid RustMort was our fav, as it leaves an anti-rust film/covering behind.
      We used to put RustMort in a big SS container, dump a pile of rusty fasteners we would get free from our buddies at the wrecking yard, then run 12v DC thru them for 24-36 hours, (de-greased them first).
      They came out like new, but were a light grey color. The damn things wouldn't rust, if you tried, unless you cut or ground the surface.

    • @isaakwelch3451
      @isaakwelch3451 Před rokem

      @@georgedennison3338 I'm merely pointing out potential downsides. Not every shop is gonna do a great job sandblasting and some will mess up your panels. I killed a friend's aluminum intake manifold dipping it in carb cleaner. I had done the same thing many, many times before w/ no damage.
      When I pulled his rare, OEM aluminum Z28 manifold out, imagine my embarrassment & surprise when it was Swiss-cheesed.
      The only thing we could figure out was a combination of fuel caused 'coking', (the black crap from rich combustion of gasoline), had damaged the aluminum. It was only in the areas where the manifold was coked badly that the aluminum dissolved.
      Boy, was that an expensive favor for a friend; not only did I have to buy him a new manifold, but it also ruined my dip tank solution.

      Fortunately I don’t deal with that aspect. We have to have all of our waste contained. We have a pit under the washbay that’s separate from our sewer drainage. The runoff is collected there. We then pump it out into evaporation tanks that have heat exchangers to evaporate all the water out of it. What’s left is a neutral sludge. We then pay a company who specializes in chemical waste disposal to dispose of it properly for us. We have to get soil and water tests around our shop every so often too.
