I was already fond of Ito as a vibe and inspiration, but damn if this didn't get me interested in going through his works (and Uzumaki specifically) on my own! I am JAZZED for the anime, for aesthetic alone, and also I am lazy and like having stories and terror beamed straight into my eyeballs. 5.) King Video, Noah! The absolute coincidence of uploading this video only a few hours away from when the current biggest youtuber on the horror scene uploaded another on the exact same subject and work. I hope it's a fortunate coincidence and helps this video's perfomance in the algorithm though.
Uzumaki works regardless of its unevenness because it's so varied. My first time reading this some 20 years ago I could not guess what would happen next. It also meant that since each chapter could be its own thing, that ideas or concepts can be explored more without having to do plot stuff bogging it down. Shows like X-Files are fun because you will hop in and not know where the episode is going, which keeps you guessing. Instead of acting as a novel or mini series, you have a loosely connected series of short stories. The Japanese story collection Goth by Otsuichi [Highly recommended] follows a pair of high school students who become entangled with different murderers and serial killers. Each story is pretty much a standalone story with tiny bits of character stuff for the two leads. This style of storytelling is fun [Like watching a television show], allowing for this spiderweb effect as you see how everything is loosely connected with events and/or a major thematic. The William Hope Hodgson weird horror collections Carnaki and Sargasso Sea Stories are likewise composed of short stories that follow the same character[s]. A quick note on The Jack in the Box, which draws on two vampire concepts: the western idea of needing to stake a vampire, and the eastern idea of hopping vampires. Junji Ito likes mixing Western elements into his stories, like gothic horror and European castles, along with Hammer Horror and Lovecraftian themes. He likes all kinds of horror stories, so it's not surprising that he often mixes them together. One last thing. Junji Ito intimidated me the first time [The snail boys, and the pregnant women with drills]. I love Giger and EC Horror comics, along with Carpenter's The Thing, but the share weirdness and grotesqueness of Ito's artwork was something else.

Your critique about chapter 6 (specifically how first page compares to the story of that chapter) i think that page was added as a microcosm of that chapter, they cool as fuck and i dont have a mullet
lovely video and im enjoying it a lot but i definitely think hair can be scary whether its the ring/the grudge or for me and what i was more so thinking being poc and having really hard to take care of hair it’s not per say scary but i would avoid showers bc of how long and difficult it would be to comb/clean my hair. It was always to the point my shower went on so long that my water would get cold even if i stopped using the water every chance i could i would always finish my shower cold. Plus the fact my hair was an Afro it would get in the way of other people and get in my way in daily life kinda like kire in the story. The only way i stopped feeling so miserable was literally shaving my head also like kire. So yeah this is just my personal interpretation but i also could just be thinking way too deep into this since this is a more personal topic for me!

Oh yeah, no this is pretty weird. I don't think I would see someone's Dad being strangely obsessed with something as a red flag... I just thought most people's Dads are like that? (Read: my sense of normality is slipping and I am only becoming more unrelatable as a result). In regards to some of the chapters not really feeling relevant to the overall story - another way of experiencing stories like that is trying to view the setting as a "character" in its own right. That way all the vignette chapters serve more to flesh out the town and it's curse and gives it a sense deep power. The many ways in which the curse can manifest is what makes it scary, when you view it that way. Having said that... I also prefer stories that have a human emotional core. I think I'd be less upset if someone said my the ideas in my writing weren't interesting enough (fixable if I spend enough time reflecting on it) versus them not being able to connect to the characters (there is a Critical Flaw in the story). Those stories tend to stick more, because the fear and love they feel tend to feel like your experiences too.
Yeah I'll agree that being interested with something isn't unusual, but if you're skipping work and it's interfering with your kid's relationship with you, that might be a problem. And yeah, I think viewing each chapter as its own character makes sense, but it also feels weird, bc like I said, Uzumaki has never felt like a single, cohesive work to me, but also, it is one story, bc of the characters being the same.
