Cat Afraid of Rabbit

  • čas přidán 10. 05. 2014
  • The cat has always been afraid of the rabbit (who couldn't care less) but finally got close enough to touch him this time.
They are only together when supervised, both were unharmed.
    Rabbit is a Flemish Giant.

We had a giant New Zealand White when I was a girl, and it ran free in the garden. We looked out the window to see a cat stalking it once....the bunny watched until the cat got close, then charged it, bounced over the top of it while scraping its hind legs down the cats back, sending fur, skin - and the cat - flying. Bunnies have more defence mechanisms than you would suspect. As an adult, I have cats, dogs and rabbits. I'm happy to say, they are all very affectionate to each other, including the cat. Once your cat realises the rabbits are part of the pack, they are happily accepted, and never threatened.

We had a rabbit growing up and so did some friends of ours. They are sweet pets but other animals are right to fear them or give them much respect. Our bunny was small (under 5 lb) but he would chase down and disembowel any small animal he could catch in our back yard like frogs or young garter snakes. He was an un-neutered male unfortunately, which probably explains his aggressive streak and taste for blood. He still liked people and snuggles but he'd also turn around in a second and bite you. Our friends had a much bigger female rabbit that was generally docile and lazy, but would square up against any cat that came into her yard and she made use of those big feet and powerful back legs. Saw more than one stunned and bloodied cat limping out of their yard. Rabbits might be prey but they definitely don't act like it when they're in the mood to rumble, and they are a fierce opponent in a fight. Those big teeth are connected to strong jaws, and their hind leg kicks can rip a small animals stomach wide open or break a cats neck/jaw. All that said, rabbits are still prey and wouldn't stand a chance against a Bobcat or Coyotes, but they are by no means defenseless little puffballs.

Our male was uneutered and territorial to other animals, but not with people at all, he never bit a person, infact he was extremely tolerant. One thing he did do with people though was he would go grab a toy, go in front of whoever new was in the house, and just start mounting the toy, so even though he got excited and friendly towards new people, he still liked to demonstrate he was the boss

we have the most gentle, dwarf lionhead bunny and for the last couple of years he’s been mainly our only pet in the home.. a couple weeks ago I decided to foster a young 1 year old cat, and their first reactions to each other were HILARIOUS. The bunny didn’t notice the cat at first but nearly jumped in the air when he saw her. The cat then got scared of him, and quickly ran away at his reaction. She came back to try to touch him (in his cage) but then he saw her approaching and quickly used his back legs and feet to make STOMP noises multiple times. I’ve had him for years and NEVER heard him make that sound, it was incredible. The cat definitely learned her lesson after that and now she’ll only pass by his cage if I’m standing between them 🤣 it’s so funny because this big cat is scared of this tiny dwarf bunny, it’s like watching tom & jerry in real life hahahah.

To all rabbit pet owners! Be careful when sharing a house with a rabbit and cat. Rabbit's are prey creatures and cats are predator. Your cat will hurt the bunny if you're not careful. Rabbits are known for hurting themselves and breaking limbs all the time.

From my experience, rabbits also can (and sometimes do) heavily injure cats.

A rabbit that size can literally break bones on a cat. Not to mention strip off layers of fur and skin if it gets a good kick and can deploy its digging claws.
Fortunately the larger breeds tend to not crush cats unless they feel really threatened.

I appreciate the input from yall but i feel people are missing my point.
There are research foundations that provide abundance of information in how to take care of pets at home. They are well researched and generally well funded, providing specific guidelines for sharing a house with our animal friends. They may even investigate and sue if they find pet owners abusive or keeping their pets in unhealthy conditions. The Alinity situation with her cat is one that gained a lot of traction and I recommend checking it out if you haven't heard of it already (but who hasn't). They can even take your pets away if its demanding enough to them. That said, there are plenty of well written documents explaining that sharing a house with both a rabbit and cat is definitely not recommended, to say the least. So it doesn't matter which will hurt who, or who is more dangerous then the other. The takeaway from my post is that it's *dangerous* altogether and not recommended. Cats are predators who often hunt for fun. Even well fed ones who live in nice homes. Rabbits are prey who defend themselves when they feel they're in danger. Rabbits are also know to break their limbs in self defense. This is not the limit of either breeds. There are many other things to look out for with both pets, to include some of what yall were saying.
Aight, I spoke my peace. Hopefully that's resolution.

@@Reddotzebra Considering how fragile rabbits are it's more likely they will break their own bones. Cats are a lot tougher than rabbits.

  • @Habib_Osman

The cat isn't afraid, it's careful. Predators in nature are very often very careful. Don't mistake the cat to be fearful, it will kill the bunny in a couple hours. It will keep on poking and prodding, going a tiny little bit further every time until the bunny is dead. Cats are not domesticated, they are wild creatures at heart.
