  • www.MixMyMusic.net - Curious how they did it? Butch Vig deconstructs Nirvana's song "Something In The Way". Awesome video of him behind the console in the studio soloing out sections of the song and talking about how they made the record. This is probably my favorite clip yet. Again, tip of the hat to "Classic Albums".

“The track is a little outta tune, but that gives it kinda the eeriness... or helps with it... gives it a lot of character.”
    Rest In Peace, Kurt.
Edit: Guys, I think the point I was trying to make was that Kurt himself, like most musicians who are brilliant but tortured, was a little "out of tune" but that is what made his music so special. Chill out and just enjoy the art...

You can really hear that somber tone and see the sadness right there at the end. You can tell Kurt meant a lot to him. And not just someone who helped make him even more famous, or made him more money. There is a sadness there, because a friend is no longer there. Maybe it's just me, but he almost looks like he is trying not to cry at the end. And I can't really blame him.
I feel as much sadness for Butch as I do Krist & Dave. Kurt had a beautiful and tortured soul. I hope wherever he, and Layne S. ended up, they can make their beautiful music and be happy.

Something In The Way felt like a taste, a glimpse of the ultimate future of Nirvana after In Utero.
I'm talking about the whole accoustic thing they were gunna do with their next album, I mean the way Butch is explaining how Kurt told them to be more quiet, how Chris and Dave had difficult time because they hit so hard, etc etc just makes me think about the Unplugged gig they did and how that would/did effect the band in a very drastic way. The ironic thing is that this song was in Nevermind, the hard hittin album that would shift rock music back into mainstream, and that it was the LAST track (not including endless nameless of course).

I was 15 and a big Nirvana fan, so I went along with him to see Cobain's hometown. There wasn't much going on and my dad was working all day, so I checked out the map and the only river in town was nearby. I figured I might find the bridge and check it out, so I walked up the river and found it within a mile or so. It was an interesting thing to see lit candles and a kind of makeshift, rugged shrine under the bridge, with a couple flowers and things. Really was touching for me at the time. RIP.

Was in the drive-thru of an Arby's on the main strip. Middle of the afternoon and two guys are just standing right next to my car sharing a crackpipe. It was probably a nice small town 50-60 years ago, but now it's all shuttered up and lost.

Definitely one of the greatest songs ever written. Put it up there with the all time greats. If you hear this on a cold winter night driving all alone it could change your life. It did mine when I first heard it when I was 10. My oldest brother showed me alot of Nirvana songs that weren't big hits. School. Floyd the barber. Scentless apprentice. And many others. But when I heard this song I teared up. My brother usually would talk to me while the songs played but we both got so quiet when this song came on. We couldn't even look at eachother after. That's the power kurt had over us. Simple song. Simple lyrics. So fucking deeping to a person emotions no matter age gap or race or religion. Kurt was the greatest artist of all time when it came to being honest in music.

+Daniel Malik Yup. The entire subject of Nirvana is very difficult for people to talk about, and especially for those personally involved. I totally understand how he felt. He was lost for words. Sometimes words have no description or meaning. It's hard.

i think this song is the epitome of kurts musical and artistic talent, to write a song and record it from the soul, rather than from an amp or into a mic. he sat on that couch and his soul played the guitar, the mics werent recording, they were listening. kurt was more than just an artist, more than the guitarist and front man of nirvana, for god sakes he was more than just kurt cobain. he was my biggest inspiration, still is, and always will be. may he rest easy, in the hearts and souls of millions
