      I’ve never had good luck with CX across my .270 and a 6.5 Creedmoor. Have yet to try in my 7 PRC. Similar to you I had huge groups. 4-6 inches. Probably can’t write off the ammo off just two rifles but despite that, I have never had ammo shoot anywhere near as bad as ai have had CX shoot. Let alone premium ammo.

    • @phild9813

      The copper bullets seem to have a reputation for a couple things I’ve been made aware of in terms of grouping shots. First is you need to start with a squeaky clean barrel. If it’s fouled with regular jacketed lead bullets it apparently hurts accuracy. Also copper bullets apparently need more “jump” than lead ones, meaning some chambers may be more ideal than others if using factory ammo. I’m in the process of testing the clean barrel hypothesis with a couple rifles.

      @@phild9813 The CX was first load I tried in my brand new Bergara in 6.5 and it shoot extremely poorly. The .270 was not clean but about equally as bad. I have short Barnes LRX through the 6.5 Bergara and they shoot famously. My best group with that rifle was with Barnes 127 LRX. 4 shots in a hole about the size of a penny and a final 5th shot just about 1/3 inch below the hole.

    I spoke to hornady and the powder being used currently is staballHD. Now the powder used during the development of this cartridge was RLD 26 and H1000 and that’s the powder they want to use. Due to powder shortages by hodgen and such they decided to reload with staball to keep the flow of ammo in stores going. Essentially these are bad batches and once the powders they want to use are available we will be getting the velocities we want and see a increase of accuracy

      Never design a cartridge that will have limited performance. They should have made the body longer and a coal of 3.6” it would have been money. Then it wouldn’t have mattered what powder you’re using. Also 7mm heavies like n570, Retumbo and RL33. RL26 and h1000 is not a top end for the heavies. As example 6mm ARC 108 match ammo is listed at 2750 with 24” barrel. I have a 22” and it runs 2615. They just lie on their box of ammo when it comes to their cartridges like 7 PRC and 6mm ARC. Now I’ve had better luck with 6.5 PRC. I do believe that is the best one of them all.

    • @jiminator5
      @jiminator5 Před 2 měsíci

      Completely agree with everything you said, with handloads I can easily hit that 3000 make and then some but I am not a fan of them having to have the absolute perfect powder to get the advertised velocity.

    • @SpudOutdoors
      @SpudOutdoors Před 2 měsíci

      @@jiminator5 that’s just it with the ARC. The powders that get the best velocity is cfe223 and lever. Both are horrible unstable and sucks to measure. And even on a perfect day it would never achieve those numbers. In the end all it means is they 100% lied on the box.

    Seems apparent that the only thing Hornady does right is dominate the availablity and marketing/advertising to promote a mediocre or just slightly improved cartridge; especially to us hunters. The prc cartridges also appear to be more designated by engineering towards target accuracy and target rules and peramiters as oposed to maximum energy and smooth cycling; a desire I learned about hunting in bear country. Classics cartridges will always be classics for a reason as hunters endure where target shooters trend.

Less weight, less recoil, shorter bolt, ammo availibility everywhere, and selection. Nothing wrong persay about the 300prc, it just needs to simmer for a bit will say, and let the ammo manufacturers catch up. For now the 300wm rules the roost for most hunters, and can be hotroded to even beat the prc if one chooses. Prc is maxed after you handload it. Just got 2 cases of Hornady 7PRC 160 CX ammo on auction at $38 delivered (per box). I don't have high hopes for velocity or accuracy but plan to shoot as is in 4 different 7PRCs I have. If it works in one or more, fine. If not, I'll pull a box at a time, weigh all the powder, split it evenly over 20 rounds, resize the case necks to 0.003 less than a loaded round with my neck bushing die, open it up 0.001 with my turning mandrel, and start playing with seating depth. Kind of like handloading but the process will at least even out all the powder charges and ensure, hopefully, more consistent B-O measurements and neck tension. Plus, only monolithics I've used are Barnes. Wouldn't mind seeing how the Hornady CX does on game. But, mostly what I see on youtube is poor accuracy.

    There is only a little practical difference between the cartridges. I think the 7 PRC is "better" for 2 reasons. First it's easier to get accurate affordable mass produced rifles with the newer beltless case design and chamber specifications. Secondly the faster twist rate in the bareel and case design to allow for longer bullets not taking up powder space in the case. I think in an extreme case there could be as much as a %10 to %15 realistic performance improvement max. And with 7 rem mag you generally have plenty anyway. However if you had a challenge of take $2000 go to the store get a rifle scope and ammo to shoot a PRS match with I think the PRC would have a noticable advantage. Swap the same scenario to an elk hunt instead of a PRS match and I think the wider availability of 7 rem mag ammo options outpace any perceived advantage of a 7 PRC.

    Every video that I have watched when comparing these two cartridges, shows basically the same information. Hornady is basically lying to the public about factory velocities on the 7PRC for sales. The cartridge takes advantage of the faster twist rates and allowing the bullet to be seated out further, thus not impeding case capacity. Any hand loader knows, that by seating the 7mag out longer than saami specs which is 3.290", will allow the bullet to not impede the powder column in the case, thus allowing for more powder and better velocities. My 7mag load is seated to 3.415" which is still .020" off the lands. And save me the "more efficient cartridge" BS for other videos, which you didn't mention and thank you for that. Given same pressures, same twist rate, same bullet, old Big 7 will still dominate.

      @@AlaskanBallistics No I don't. Mine is a 9.5 twist Browning Abolt II Medallion 7mag with BOSS system that I have had since the early 90's or whenever the BOSS system was introduced by Browning. Decided to start loading for it about a year ago just to see. I have been reloading for my other rifles for a long time but with all this 7 PRC craze, I decided to give it a shot. My magazine is modified to allow up to a maximum COAL of 3.710" which is well pass the saami spec of the 7mag at 3.290". This extra length allows for more powder column as well as seat the bullet out to where the boattail meets the neck/shoulder junction, like they did with the 7 PRC. So I question anyone with the PRC as to why can you do it and not me with the 7mag. My only issue is I'm limited weight wise do to my twist rate, but I will definitely touch the land before I run into any magazine constraints. When (if?) Hornady ever gets it together, the only benefit of 7PRC over mag is the faster twist barrel so you can shoot heavier bullets, and the lack of the belt. Having said that, that’s good enough for me, I got a 7PRC for the long range capability, and it doesn’t disappoint.

    If I had a choice between the two I would go with the rem mag. It’s been around for awhile and we know it’s tried and true. Now if you are asking what round I would use over those two I would go with my 300 win mag due in part to being a 30 caliber because the 300 will punch through brush while the 7mm will just deflect. Just my opinion

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah i don't see how a few hundredths of an inch prevents deflection. That's an interesting statement to prove. I'll have to think of a test for that.
      I'm pretty sure bullet shape would have more to do with it than caliber/diameter. I could be wrong.

    Struggling to see why, ballistically speaking, a person would buy the 7 PRC over a 7 mag, 280 AI, or even the 6.8 western. If I were buying a new big game rifle, I’d look very hard at the 6.8, especially if Barnes starts loading ammo with the 155 LRX.

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  Před měsícem

      Experience... i get at box/book velocity or even much better with 26" barrels. I rarely do with 24" barrels... really with anything over 50-55grs of powder.

    • @AlaskanBallistics
      @AlaskanBallistics  Před 3 měsíci +1

      As it should with a higher b.c. the problem is that eldx is absolutely terrible on big game. It shatters and fails to penetrate. At 212 yards it shattered so quickly it didn't break a cow caribou's spine for me . I'll never use that trash glorified vmax bullet again. The CX is a much much better performer in big game

      Everyone loves to bag on Hornady but there isn’t another company that has been innovating the industry. All of my rifles use Hornady and they’re all definitely match grade. Granted, the 180 ELDM isn’t as fast as advertised, but I can dial to any steel target I have (1400 and less) and reliably make first round cold bore hits. With factory ammo. Don’t know how much more you want than that?
