I see grizzlies every season here in Wyoming. Most of them leave us alone. Two years ago a sow with two cubs ran across the trail 25 yards in front of us. Thankfully they kept running down the hill and away from us!

Thanks for your great shows. I flyfish and hunt in grizzly country in Alberta. I always carry bear spray and a canned air horn. This year has been a bad berry season so there seem to be more issues.

I'm in grizz country often in southern Alberta. I use electronic ear defenders that enhance my hearing by 4x. I'm rarely alone but am always looking around for bear or cougar. We gut our animals there. Once the shot goes off, making noise isn't an issue. The birds take care of gut piles right quick. The crows hear shots like dinner bells. My friend forgot a deer heart one time. He back tracked to the pile shortly after we dragged the deer out and it was gone. The other downside of the gutless method is the tenderloins. I'm not leaving those.
Big male bears will emerge occasionally in winter during warm times like a chinook and maybe find some carion.
I may go hunt some whitetail in the mountain zones for early rifle season (bucks only) in October. I don't bow hunt. I don't like the idea of meat spoiling in warm weather. Bear spray at the hip and stubby slugger on the pack are your friends when you don't have a rifle. We can't carry pistols here.
On the bright side, my friend won a draw for cow moose tag for outside of bear country in November and I won 2 tags for cow elk for the late season in Dec/Jan in bear country so I'll be fine. We will be gutting and retrieving those tenderloins. 😁

I do live in Oregon, and I think the problem is" Portland" and our Governor and the fact the State is Liberal (not me btw) as a native Oregonian I'm disgusted by what has happened to my home state especially since Brown was in🤬 everything has gone to hell

Thanks Randy, great info. Up here in Alberta we have a ton of griz and no hunting season. I run into one every year or two and some of the encounters are a bit scary. Every year we have at least one death [ two so far this year before hunting season ]. It appears the bears are becoming more aggressive over time. The local game wardens say if it is close shoot it. We need to reduce the population in a serious manner. One of these days a kid or close relative of an "important" person will be killed and we will have or Griz hunting season back again. Until then a lot of regular people will suffer.

I just came up from the States and hunted in Pincher Creek. Left the area after seeing a grizz 300 yards away right as the sun was setting. Nerve racking to have just a bow and no side arm.

Years ago my dad told us when we were 15 or 16 and hunting in black bear country. If a bear chases you, climb a tree. Then in my 30’s we were observing a sow bear with two cubs feeding around a dumpster. A male bear came in and the sow signal her cubs to climb a tree. The male and female had a stand of growling at each other and the sow went up the same tree as the cubs and went past them!!! I sad man dad wanted us to climb a tree??? That’s just food on a stick!

Not ashamed to admit, but I’m sure glad we don’t have them down here in Arizona. I don’t think I’d ever be relaxed if I were in grizz country. They really need to open a season.

To be fair in Oregon there' are exemptions.
Specifically, you CAN do elk and bears as long as they belong to the same hunter's gender. Make sure to register your gender identification with the FWP BEFORE you do the ... thing..

Randy in bear country i would carry at minimum a Marlin Guide gun 45-70 lever gun to hunt with. Just for the 5+1capacity. Preferably i think that I would carry a 12 gauge Typhone f12 shotgun with a 19 round banana mag, or a 30 round drum, loaded with alternate 00buckshot and rifled slug. A 460 Wetherby magnum loaded with 500 grain solid would be a third choice. Basically anything that will do to the grizzly what a 30-06 will do to a Wood Chuck 😁

That poor guy, nightmare. As a non resident alien it's worse for us, we can't carry a handgun, just bear spray. But the most dangerous thing that happened to me in Montana was when I was taking a pee by a river, looking around for a grizzly a deadly mozzie bit me on a very sensitive part of my anatomy, true story!

You know all those problems are from those crazies that live in Portland! You found out when you tried to eat their pizza🤔😳 The problem is the crazies run the whole state and they are not kidding when they say keeping the state weird! Oregon used to be a normal state but all the democratic people from California moved here and US natives have suffered every since!

This is just my humble opinion. But as I see this there were a few mistakes made. Rudy should not have helped. Hard choice I know but he should have had the hunters call the Fish & Game and let them help them, I don't think they would have helped. The next option would have been too leave the deer to the wolves, bears or coyotes. I know what the regs say. You have to try your best to find the game you have wounded, but is a wounded game animal worth death or being injured by a bear. Rudy made some bad choice when he went to find that deer.
1: Not having a working hand gun.
2: Not having his bear spray on his belt or some place handy.
3: Relaying on someone how he might not know to back him up.
4: Not having a 12ga shotgun with double 00 shot shells.
I do feel Rudy was being a good man trying to help but sometimes you have to stop and give it a lot of thought before you go. Rudy I wish you a speedy recovery.
I hope is will give people a time stop and think about hunting in bear country.

If Swan lake cuts a bunch of timber down they should all be put in jail! I'm so sick of all the wildlife refuges cutting timber for waterfowl. That place has some giant whitetails. I understand the need to give waterfowl a refuge. This is getting way out of hand.
