episode 14, in today's episode I wanted to speak about the gay best friend phenomenon. Showcased widely in media as well as in real life behind every leading girly there's always a gay best friend, but why??
I saw someone say that queer characters in tv shows are portrayed in order to be palatable for straight viewers too and that made me realise why I felt weird watching Heartstopper
Omg Brad when you spoke about the reason girls feel more comfortable in gay bar’s and gay spaces it’s so accurate! You actually feel like you can ‘relax’ and have a good time - they’re such positive fun spaces. Unfortunately, I’ve had the experience of straight men coming to them spaces and they truly ruin the vibe and I think they have terrible intentions being there. It’s like they’re looking for girls to target.
I really liked hearing this perspective. Majority of gay guys I’ve been friends with have been extremely respectful of women in a way that straight men just usually aren’t. They actually talk to you like a person and show care without any other motivations. I think that’s really all it takes to be friends. I have a bi friend that’s a man and I also feel extremely comfortable with him- im not sure what that means because obviously there could be that other motive, but I’ve never felt that vibe from him. We are just genuinely friends, he’s got solid boundaries and he is much more empathetic to things women experience than other men which makes me feel relaxed around him. On the other hand he has told me before how tense he is around dudes because they often bully him. Maybe it really is just fear of straight men that bonds us 😂

For my mum's 50 birthday (1978), I took her to a famous gay Hollywood disco; she knew more of the boys than I did! She danced all night while I was a proper wallflower.
Your last point actually reminds me of the recent character development in this show called 9-1-1 (It has a sister show called 9-1-1 Lonestar, which also has representation and I enjoy but is not what I am referring to).
This show centers around firefighters, and one of the main characters is a firefighter that is a stereotypical ladies man, and a fan favorite since the beginning season, and goes through a lot of development in figuring out what he wants from relationships and what's important to him in his life.
This current season the character figured out he is bisexual, and on queue a good portion of straight people that watch the show flipped out because he didn't fit their stereotype of a queer man and have this cognitive dissonance because this character was previously one of their favorites.
Of course, a lot of the queer community that watches has been saying that this character had bisexual vibes for several seasons and are happy the show is exploring this character development.
It's extremely interesting to me to see online that some people are having a hard time with this because this character didn't fit their preconceived notion of a bisexual man and they don't know how to process it 😅

I woke up at 8:30 this weekend both saturday and sunday and I didn't set an alarm. So annoying but good morning Brad 🤣 P.s - I have been a gay best friend many times and I think we are often happy to be included as LGBT people we don't question why we are included. You can get quite deep into the friendship before you realize it is not what you thought.
Your comment about being open to being with a woman spoke to me. I think part of the demisexual experience is recognizing that even if you do identify as gay, you also recognize that it's very much a spectrum. I've admitted to my friends that while I'm physically attracted to men, I can easily see myself in an emotionally intimate relationship with a woman. Back in college (back when I was still figuring myswlf out), I was very much in love with a girl. But like you, I think my comfort nowadays is with other men since I'm ultimately afraid of being labeled as just the gay bestie even when trying to pursue someone romantic with a woman.

Great episode Brad! I guess I’ve always seen things a little differently than others. Growing up, I didn’t have any Gay people in my life that I was aware of. I choose my friends and the people I want to be around knowing that they’re a good person.
I don’t think that I’d choose someone to be a “cushion” or safety net due to their sexuality.
That’s just me I suppose

As a straight woman I have quite a lot of gay friends, I would say a large part of it is our personalities just seem to work well together and there is a definitely a part of it that is not having to worry that they have other intentions in the friendship. For me it is never a question of 'keeping them around', they are just genuinely my friends and I treat them the same as any other friend. I find that we both feel more comfortable with each other than either of us would with straight men, and therefore stick together and are there for each other, which just leads to a really nice and supportive friendship :))
Ooo the gay best friend. I think another good example would be Sex and the City.
i dont think kurt from glee was supposed to be the "gay best friend" bc his arc never touched on that, buuuut stanley from sex and the city for example was really caged into that stereotype.

I live in a small town, and we recently found out the first gay bar ever in this town is opening at the end of the month. Within the first few hours of the announcement on Facebook there was a comment from a 'lad' 🙄 saying "there'd be an uproar if we opened a Straight Bar." Tells you the kind of town I live in 🙄
