- In this 96th Video from Classic Car ChitChat you will get to meet Brian who has a stunning 1965 Ford Thunderbird. The 1965 Ford Thunderbird was truly a Classic American car, and had the redesigned interior, with a new dashboard layout and more comfortable seating. The car also featured a swing-away steering wheel, which made it easier for drivers to get in and out of the vehicle.
The 65 Thunderbird also came with several engine options, including a 390 cubic inch V8 engine that produced 300 horsepower, a 390 cubic inch V8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor that produced 330 horsepower, and a 428 cubic inch V8 engine that produced 345 horsepower. The 1965 was a true success for Ford, with over 74,000 units sold in the United States alone. Its combination of luxury features, powerful engines, and stylish design helped make it a popular choice for buyers in the mid-1960s.

I hope my Classic Car ChitChat videos make you smile. I do them in my spare time because I truly love cars and my intentions are simply to honour the beautiful cars I get to see and to really understand the passion and love of the vehicle by the driver (or caretaker as Jay Leno would say) of the car. I also understand too that my videos perhaps lack the polish calibre of great CZcamsrs like: Doug DeMuro, Scotty Kilmer, and of course my favourite Supercar Blondie. I also know that I can’t even come close the quality & finish you get from the likes of Jeremy Clarkson and the boys at Top Gear. I think they use a little fancier equipment than my little iPhone… LOL
Mission Statement:
My Objective through creating these videos is to shine the spotlight on people who love their vehicles whether it be a car, motorcycle, or even a bicycle…. Bottom line is if it has wheels and you love it then let’s show that passion to the world!
Equipment Used:
Camera
- Just an iPhone SE (Nothing fancy - which proves anyone can use whatever you have handy to make a video… you don’t need really expensive equipment)
- I also use Insta 360X2 which is perhaps one of the best investments I have made and allows me to capture some really cool 360 degree views and also creates a “drone like” effect with the invisible selfie stick attachment.
Gimbal - DJI OM4 - For that ultra-smooth cinematic look. (To be honest... still not quite sure how to use it but one day I will figure it out!)
Audio - Rode Wireless GO II (I gotta be honest… this is really the biggest investment that was made… I wish there was a cheaper option but after the first couple of videos I soon realized that audio quality is important and hopefully better than the onboard mic on the iPhone!

The vents in the rear wear part of the flow thru air system with the fresh air vents opened it allowed for an exchange of air in the car. After introducing this system on the Thunderbird in 67, Ford included it as an option on the LTD and Mercury Marquis. They discontinued the breezeway roof on the Mercurys in that year, too. The Thunderbird had cruise control as an option and I believe 65 or 66 may have been when the increase and decrease buttons appeared on the steering wheel, first onthe Thunderbird and a year or two later on the other cars.

My pop was a big Bird lover and worked at a dealership and worked on a few Fords but always loved this generation of Bird the most. He had always dreamed of owning one and since they cot so much he and my uncle Pete bought one together and got a 67 in light blue. After my pop passed away uncle Pete kept it running until he passed away too. Such fond memories.

It is the vent that passes cabin air out the back. There’s an old thunderbird ad that shows cigarette smoke exiting that rear window vent.

The vents under the rear window are for the ventilation in the car lets air flow throughout the car my 64 tbird and my 66 LTD both have it very cool

Exact color combo and options as the '65 'bird I used to own. I heard it went up north somewhere. Maybe all the way to Canada? Anyhow, cool car. "Grill" below the rear window is to provide flow through ventilation.

I didn't realize the Thunderbird created the sequential brake lights. I thought only Mustangs had them.
No kidding.. so cool.
Some early Cougars had them, too.
Yes, the 65 Thunderbird had the sequential turn signals first, continued to have them for some years after that, then the 67 Mercury Cougar had them next think the Cougar had the through 73, the Mustang to the best of my knowledge never had them until recently.
Your Shelby GT500's of 67/68 were sporting 1965 Thunderbird tail lights that old Carroll got out of the Ford parts bin!!
The vents under the rear window is part of what they called flow thru ventilation . When you opened the vents in the front, fresh air would flow thru the car

I’m shocked that a 65 t-bird with all these options did not have the “new” am/fm/tape system with 4 speakers.
Kitty, that is interesting as to why it may not have been there. I would imagine it may have been one of those “optional extras” that the original owner did not want to fork out for. It’s a shame the dealers used to install those ugly side mouldings that were popular at that time. They were supposed to protect against door dings but they ruined the looks instead. Even worse, some were installed by drilling holes in the car and using rivites hopefully these were glued on!

I will attest to that. I own a 63 Sport Roadster. And yes the Thunderbird is a high maintenance car. Mine only has 21 K miles on it but with age something is always going out. And the 10 m.p.g. that I get around town fueling the 4200 lb. Bullet Bird with premium gas.
The views are so ridiculously far away in the opening drives, that it renders the first 4 minutes a waste of time. I almost gave up and stopped watching the video. I am a first timer to your podcast.
