      I put it in the cam with my dad, I do have a video showing what all you need. But the whole swap was alittle over $1000, plus about $300 for a tune.

    Built 5.3, Big cam, 1 7/8 long tubes, 3 inch Y-pipe, electric cutouts, stock 6.2L exhaust, Yank SS 4000k, 4.11 gears with a truetrac. The truck was dropped 5.5 inches in the front, 9 in the rear on 20s. It averaged 19 miles to the gallon, and was no louder than a stock truck, until I opened the cutout.

  • @christiansnyder7886
    @christiansnyder7886 Před 3 lety +9

    My gas mileage changed about 5% with a dyno tune, the lope can be tuned to the level you want sort of, and you can run a quieter muffler like a Flowmaster 44 or 50 and it will still sound nice 👍 keep your epa cats delete the third cat (carb cat) delete that for better flow. Also get a 224/224 or lower duration cam so you get more power across the entire rpm band. And a 112 LSA will give you strong lope but not super crazy lik a 110 LSA. 114 will sound closer to stock.
    Once again a dyno is a must for drivability. With supporting mods on a Gen IV and a tune I’m well above 400 horsepower

    My brother had a 2009 G8 w an Ls swap (Ls3) with a 231/242 camshaft and it sounded like a complete beast W/out headers only had some other small modifications , a cam really bring out a lot of attention specially when it's just on a red light.

    Add a shift kit to your transmission, and get a tune to help out with the power management. Also the more duration, separation and lift on your cam will affect the power band. The less duration, separation and lift, the lower the power band and engine RPM. At least that's my understanding of it.

Been wanting to cam mine for a few years just never got around to it. Now I don't have a choice lol Couple ?s Whats your idle RPM set at? Did you diy the install and/or tune? And did you tune the trans with the engine or mod the tune for converter clutch lockup? Is it a dog right after 1st gear? If you unlock that f'er 1st-4th you'll definitely see a boost in acceleration rate. Ask me how I know... Haha Again cool vid bud

    Tune it soon bro. You need the right fuel to air ratio or else you'll stall out. Which is the big cam mistake people make. Tune it or else those small problems you've been facing will turn into disasters. Thanks for the video man. And remember, no such thing as too loud. Best of luck !

    Have you taken it the track yet? The surging you are talking about is cam related. If you still have it then you need to get it tuned ASAP. Also they can pull a stock converter off and loosen it up a little bit. Any converter will blow your mind at the improvement.

      @cominus Před 7 lety +9

      Getting the surge is weird, what's your idle rpm are you set at, and how big of a cam did you get?
      To compensate for the "early" shifting you might want to look into a higher stall for the transmission, and a lower gear ratio for the rear end, not sure what you have on there now.

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  Před 7 lety

      +Daniel Diaz I think the surging and shifting is happening because I don't have a higher stall. I just have a comp cam 220/220 just with the 3.42 gears.

    I cammed my Silverado, it’s cool and I get a lot of compliments on the sound. Tuning it was a hassle and my brakes didn’t get enough vacuum so I had to install an electric pump from a GM hybrid. The truck Norris cam says it works on a stock converter but personally I think sitting at lights is kinda miserable tbh it’s needs more converter. This truck is a weekend driver and ever since the cam I feel like I drive it less because it’s kinda a hassle. If the brakes and transmission felt like stock maybe it would be better. Personally I’m going to put the cam in something else and swap a stock one back in.

    Don't forget your Trans cooler when you go with a stall convertor.

    Sounds like you really need a tune. That’s a pretty small cam to have surging issues, not to mention your shifting issues. It’s all fixed with the tune and the right tuner. For example, my 6.0L in my car with 230/238 cam has no surging, relatively smooth idle for what it is( you know there’s a cam in it) and smooth power band.

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  Před 5 lety

    louder exhaust after came ?!? put a bigger muffler on it to bring it back down. also that would help not making the neighbors mad leaving early or coming in late
    get a stall to help with the lower torque. it allows the truck get to the 3000rpms faster... a nice 2600-2800rpm stall would be enough but 3200stall would be best. look at circle D
    also add a trucool 40k to keep the temp of transmission temp down.
    surging has to do with the idle air being metered threw the throttle body. lot of times i seen people need to drill out the hole in the throttle plate a size or so bigger. also helps with the idle tuning. start looking there to fix that.

    Cammed 13' GMC 5.3 here. One other con I have is when driving slowly like in a parking lot, the engine wants to load up when I'm just rolling along with no foot on the gas or the brake and I have to ride the brake to keep it idled down.

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  Před 7 lety

      +bbart25 I haven't had a problem with that, just when I'm trying to slow down or idling it wants to jump around in the rpms when it's in drive.

    whats up John quick question... What size/type cam do you recommend for 4.8 tahoe..and can my heads & intake stay stock or do i have to upgrade them?

    • @JohnVesely
      @JohnVesely  Před 7 lety +1

      +Street_Toy_TV.LIVE!!! It all depends on what your going to use it for. But stock heads are fine, and intake should be fine. If you upgrade both as well as a pair of headers you'll see a big gain after the cam swap

    I have a Craftsmen lawnmower tractor with the kholer pro-series v-twin in it that I rebuilt a while ago, and if you let it idle long enough it will get really lopy (think like a dragster) and my mom gets pissed off at me when I let it lope because she thinks it'll ruin the engine, and then she'll get even more pissed off when I tell/explain to her it's not actually doing anything.
