Can't beat that! Not too high, proper nice fat tires for it, great bumper, awesome exhaust! Great truck in general! Would be cool if a 3408 could fit... lol
Absolutely, that has got to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen!!!!!!!!!! Excellent job Sir !!!! I love it!! I watched this video 20 times and each time I am more amazed. I just wonder how is it on fuel?????
Likely terrible. If like most any other medium duty diesel, it should get somewhere around 6 mpg or so. It also depends a lot on what gearing the truck's axles have as well. So, it may get up around 10 to 12 mpg, but that's being awful optimistic.
My only question is: Why would you sell it? You'd never get out of it what you've got in it. May as well just keep it. I can tell by the cobwebs that it's been sitting a while. Probably want too much money for it.
You sir have made my mind up for the next build I am planning. 78 or 79 f250 crew with the 3208 caterpillar marine version engine. Thanks for giving a good perspective and inside look.
bought a gmc topkick pulled the lid forward and low and behold it had a brand new 3208 sitting in it,it even had new exhaust manifolds on it,and it sounds new too
Hey there Mr cat approves, it is in fact a '73 with a '78 grill and headlights and you can tell it is from a few things but the chrome trim on the bottom of rocker panels is one thing and the another is the closed knuckle front axle, Notice the extremely long front driveline...another reason im sure the owner chose this model because of the divorce transfer case. I have owned many of these trucks and i have to say I like this variation with CAT motor.
My cousin had a 68 F-250 2wd with a Perkins 6 cyl turbo diesel and a two speed Road Ranger.out of a dump truck...fit perfectly under the hood....lost of pulling power!
I love me some CAT V8s. They're the best sounding V8s out there as far as I'm concerned. Hearing an un-piped 3408 roar to life with an air-start and then just go "wubwubwubwub" like a dragster from hell is the closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had. Those 32s sound pretty damn good too, though. Not as good as a 34, but then again, a 34 probably weighs more than that whole truck lol.
jet boater that’s also their weak point. The start before they get proper oil pressure and will burn out the two rearmost cylinders. I have lots of equipment with 3208s and have two keys for all of them. Get it cranking for a couple seconds then while cranking then the other key on and boom she’s going. Figured this out after rebuilding a couple of them. Never a problem since with any of them.
I would kill for this truck 0.0 absolutely love it 😍 not only is the engine impressive but the body and interior are flawless!! You should make more of these and sell them, I bet you can turn a profit!
Back in the early 80’s a friend of mine put one in the 79 F250 4x4 that he bought brand new off the Lot. Guy is in his late 70’s now but still has it in mint condition though it’s been his Farm truck all these years
The 3208 NA's like this one are loud and not very powerful. Drove a bunch of 3208T's rated at 275HP in a number of flatbeds hauling lumber, and they did pretty well. The turbo added some length to the overall package, though, so it would make it an even tighter fit.
That took some serious talent, AWESOME truck! Does it have air brakes? I thought I saw a brake chamber under there, and you have an air pressure gauge on the dash. If I had seen the truck when you had it for sale, it would be in MY garage right now!
The frame and running gear is definitely older than '77 but the rest of the truck is newer. Cab, bed, doghouse and grille are '78. The F250 emblems moved from the fender to the cab for the 77, 78 and 79 models. Headlights and gas door are other giveaways.
i built one in a 250 in 1980 and ran it 9 years. there was a guy featured in pop mechanics or pop science that was drag racing his 3208 f250. i called him about the oil pan deep end, you just turn the pan around
Dream pickup.!! This is what my 76_ (with low pinion 44, divorce 205, and round head light's) needs asap. Nice ride. Respect for the old GroundHogs on 16.5
The 3208 is used in New Holland combines and probably lots of other applications. Still this is a neat mod job. My hats off to you. What's the air chamber do underneath? Engine must of came out of a truck with air brakes.
Nice job, 3208 CAT. looks like somebody spend some time on that. i know is going to run 7.5 mpg or maybe 8mpg because is a lite truck. The other how is he doing on brakes , stopping power? that is a heavy motor . he had to put some extra leaf springs in front to keep it level .
Impressive. P/S, P/B, A/C, Cat Diesel, biggest, baddest bumper known to mankind and it's Kalifornia Compliant! Jokes aside, pretty bad ass build, someone put a lot of time into making it fit.
Only problem we had with 3208 was that throttle response was so quick that an unloaded truck with a manual transmission would surge with every bump in the road. It was a real pain trying to hold your foot steady. With a decent load, the problem wasn't present. Some people referred to this engine as disposable because it didn't have cylinder sleeves and Cat didn't sell oversize pistons. Two engines ruined by field service personnel (too lazy to properly service air filter) were bored for dry sleeves and rebuilt. Great engine for medium heavy trucks.
You are kidding right? Every 3208 I have run (brand new, reman, or 100,000 miles) had sluggish response. You can't get ''quick'' response unless it's a souped up marine version.
robby844 Nope, not kidding. 1977 F7000, with 3208 and RT610 equipped with a Prentice (?) boom and 16 foot flat bed. Even with that load it bucked the throttle until you put something heavy on it.
getting oversized pistons for 3208 never has been a problem, .020 and .040 over both readily available. the disposable engine thing is a myth. you can get parts for 3208 practically at 7-11.
Man this truck is a dinosaur and I love it!!! Looks awesome especially the interior! Sounds so good too once OP backed from the truck! Sounds better than my 7.3 sighhhhhhhh
Nice rig. I like a 3208 but in a truck they need a lot of gears. If you could shoehorn a 13-under in it you'd really have something but in this case an Allison would work just fine.

when ford quit with the 7.3 this is what they shouldve done.
My ford 7.3 died at 318K 1 qt per 10 miles, maybe had 180hp.
Well those 318,000 miles must have been pure abuse because my 7.3 powerstroke has 236k and has zero problems and over 250hp from the factory
Same here but mines pushing 400k
My 1995 7.3 has 325k miles on it and I never had any issues with it. Still going tough💪and doesnt seem like it would slow down anytime soon.

it used to have a 13 speed spicer, I worked at the shop that converted it to the automatic.
Very nice build!!
Just for the record, that's a 78. Nice build but with the work put in to it, I hate to ever sell it. You would never get back what you put in to it.
the grills interchange with that years of truck. even though it has a 78 grille on it it still could be a 73

narrow frame, low pinion front axle and divorced t-case tells me that is def. not a 78.helluva motor for a badass truck.

probably 73...i don't see any reason for the owner to fib about it.
Up on the ranch we had a one ton ford flatbed with one of those Coca Cola diesels in it. Used it with the fifth wheel.
i will take her , good having an auto trans you have enough of gauges to keep busy !
