  • Konami and Ultra Games were prolific publishers for the Nintendo NES. Most of their games are AMAZING, but there's also some good ones and terrible ones as well. In this video I review all 50 games that were released for the North American NES. Which ones do you like the best?

    It's not controversial to dislike the NES version of Metal Gear. It's a port of the MSX game with really bad localization. It is riddled with Engrish phrases like "I feel asleep." The Metal Gear series didn't really take off until Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation.

    • @GregsGameRoom
      @GregsGameRoom  Před 7 měsíci +5

      Ha, I figured it was retroactively beloved because of the PSX version. ;-)

    • @SockFullOfCatLitter
      @SockFullOfCatLitter Před 7 měsíci +2

      It's not just bad localization, it's an entirely different game. The game was redesigned and not cared for by the original creator.

    • @wes773105333
      @wes773105333 Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@SockFullOfCatLitter yea, for some reason they changed so many things during localization that they're more or less 2 different games. They share a lot of the same map layout, but a lot has been moved around or changed completely. Some of the game mechanics were changed too. It's kind of crazy that they put in quite a bit of extra work to bring it to the West and completely butchered the translation. With a proper English translation patch, I don't think the game is bad, just different. The reason to pay the MSX over the NES version is to experience the game as Kojima intended.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 Před 6 měsíci +2

      In the US maybe, in Japan, the MSX version was pretty popular, hence why it got an MSX sequel, then the series shifted to the infamous PS1 version.

    Agree with most of these games, and learned about a couple I hadn't played before. I loved Jackal though. I actually like the unique mechanic of always shooting the machine gun up, but being able to launch grenades and such in any direction. It makes it easier to attack enemies in multiple directions. I remember not liking overhead style games as much compared to sides strollers, but loved this one.

    Chances are, if the game had an Ultra label, sometimes the game was just someone elses game that Konami ported to the NES. Skate or Die, Ski or Die, Carmen San Diego (that one had the Konami name and silver box of the era), Defenders of the Crown, and Silent Service were other companies games, Konami just happened to port them over. In Q*berts case, Konami licensed the arcade game in Japan, so they had the rights at the time, and ported the NES version under the Ultra label.

    Gradius aparently is an Engrish.. aparently the intent was to call it Gladius after the Roman infantry sword but many Asians have trouble differentiating between L & R sounds so Gladius became Gradius.
    Gladius is normally pronounced in English as Glad-e-us but in Latin its more like Glād-eye-ūs (ūs is pronounced like -oose in goose)

      @@gertytk5528 No, he was accurate. It was Gladius, and they engrished it to gradius like he said. It was describing the shape of the ship. Now it is a word, yes, but only because of that process so that is meaningless to consider in the context of explaining specifically the reason the pronunciation is Grad (like college graduate) eous, like erroneous statement. That context is exactly the pertinent information to address the confusion over the pronunciation.

    • @gertytk5528

      @@chuckufarlie8215 The Gradius creator has specifically said that it is Gradius, and it's just a coincidence that it could also be interpreted as engrish from gladius. Gradius is the name of the planet, the ship is Vic Viper. Besides if it really was just engrish, surely they would have corrected that at some point. Instead to this day, even the last game in the series is called Gradius.

The autuer bullshit they sell you fan boys is a joke. It's engineering, not story telling. All that "I wanted ti tell a story..." is complete fucking ad hoc made up tripe. Nice try, though. Yeah, I've heard the shit they say. I will never believe any of these celebrity video game directors over the business guys especially the ones on the US end after they quit because you can't ever break kayfabe in Japan, but sure... it's school yard rumors that came from nowhere, good thing the real imagineer has put that to rest.
