Small clarification: I know you can press a button to sell armor/weapon duplicates. (You can see me doing it at 17:48) But the remaining pieces all have to be sold 1 by 1, which is what I was referring to. You can see me doing exactly that in the clip when I'm talking about this. If you don't want your menu cluttered with dozens of armor pieces, you'll have to individually sell them. That's what I meant, should have worded that better.

That's because Doom Eternal's world and gore is slapstick and comical like Evil Dead 2(And this was a conscious decision by Hugo) and not SAW. If Doom Eternal's world was more practical and realistic like SAW(Doom 3), it would not be this replay able. Doom Eternal has apocalypse, demons but at the end of the day, its all about the tone the team chose to express its world. Also, look at the level variety in terms of aesthetic. It starts off at hell on earth, then ancient city of Exultia which is purely medieval, followed by an Arctic location full of ice and chill, then back to the hell rave of Super Gore nest, then the night city scape of Arc complex, so on and so forth. Its not neon lights, wet roads, big ads through and through.

There are also some completely asinine design decisions: the map sucks, some of the enemies are designed to just be obnoxious, the tutorials that NEVER STOP even after seeing them over and over again, and good heaven the final third's philosophy of "throw endless overwhelming waves since we need a challenge" culminating in one of the worst final battles I've ever played. You don't want to live in that cyberpunk world, and therefore don't like playing in it? How about TLOU, Soulslike, Diablo ? You claim there is only one way of keeping your health up during a fight, forcing you to equip that one augment? Not true. Can't say anything about the co-op flaws, because I am solo atm, but so far I experienced two crashes, with a restart not too far away, so there's that. Plus, a not so pro tip as a sidenote: activate your cyberdeck next to these yellow circles on the ground - they will spawn a stationary canon that helps you out.

    • @underthemayo
      @underthemayo  Před 3 lety

TLOU, Soulslike, Diablo, have dark worlds that compliment their gameplay. I don't think The Ascent does. The cyberpunk world be just fine even if it's not to my tastes, if only they had some more environmental variety (as stated in the video) and if the characters weren't all so offputting (as mentioned in the video).
I also didn't say there is only way way of keeping your health up. I said "A lot of times there's no way to heal yourself in combat." If you have the augment that syphons health, that's only good against a large enemy with high HP. Otherwise, you're mostly dependent on random health drops which you might not get. So yeah, especially playing solo on Hard, if you don't have the healing field and you're screwing around with Frag of EMP grenades, you're gonna die.
If the game actually allowed you to equip multiple tactical equipment types so you could cycle through 2 or 3 of them in real time combat, it would be much more practical to mess around with other equipment types because then you could switch to healing field when you need it.
But thank you for the comment.

Two augments come to mind that help you with health during combat: the one that drains life from enemies and the one that set you back to a presaved health status. But I am playing on normal, so that sure does have an impact on how important health is. Multiple tactical equipment would be great, agreed. And thanks for the long response, appreciated ;)

Big agree on the limited arsenal. 2 weapon systems are an admittedly appealing idea in concept, but in practice it's unfortunately, well, limiting. In a bad way. You don't need to go full Doom and have every single possible gun bound to a hotkey, but at least have, like, 4 on the d-pad? Just enough variety for multiple situations and for general experimentation, but not so many options that it's overwhelming or cumbersome for quick-swapping on controllers. Plus it still forces you to make choices on what to have equipped. 4 feels like the magic number to me.

You can avoid selling things over and over again by just selling the duplicates instead of repeatedly selling them off every time. There's no reason to do that unless you're OCD about having a minimalist inventory... In which case, the curse of having to resell all the individual items would be really tiring. The game also disincentivies such actions because it warns you you're about to sell your last copy of an item/weapon/etc every time... Making it even more tedious... It's systems are trying to tell you that doing such a thing is unnecessary.
Like a lot of games systems, when you do things that are counter the game's design and offer no real benefit, you're likely to have a bad time (Think of trying to play Doom Eternal like COD and trying to hide behind cover, then complaining that the game is poorly designed because you keep dying despite hiding behind cover...)

BR 2049 also balances it out by visiting places with different colour palettes like the junkyard/orphanage, the bright snowy area where Deckard’s daughter lives and the bright orange of Las Vegas.

Another great vid from mr. mayonnaise himself. This game needs a major overhaul styled update, because there's a lot of good things about it marred by outright incompetent design decisions. The looter shooter aspect of this game is one of the worst that could've been chosen because that's NOT what people play twin stick shooters for.
I'm quite confused by journalists praising this game when there are so many issues with it. One of the issues I have is that there is no run button like there normally is in twin stick shooters of this type. You're just made to jog at this annoyingly slow pace which is agonizingly tedious for a game that has you hoofing it back and forth between the same handful of locations most of the time. It's especially frustrating because of the unused buttons in your controller layout, meaning there SHOULD'VE been a run button.
The devs of this game should've studied the HOUSEMARQUE template to a T, particularly their ALIENATION game, as that is probably the closest game that I would compare The Ascent to due to it's customization and more open world nature, as far as twin stick shooter games are concerned.

    • @Mozgodrobil
      @Mozgodrobil Před 3 lety +4

Excuse me sir, but I've completely failed to see how this game is anything close to being a looter shooter. If anything it has more common with souls games than a looter shooter. Upgrade material is mostly scattered through the world, weapons are found either from enemies, yes, but there is no random factor to their stats or anything else for that matter, except for the drop chance. Some weapons can only be found the same way as the upgrade material, so you don't need to farm anything really. Expore the world, find hidden stuff here and there.
The abscence of run button is noticable indeed, but the moment you get to use Taxi feature you kinda forget about it. Alas this issue will pop up at some places where you can't fast travel for sure.
The world altho same-ishly looking, is brimming with detail, as if it was living on it's own, and I did appireciate that a lot. Certainly the game has lots of issues, like high level enemies messing 5 to 10 meters away from whatever you were doing on your main/side mission, which leads you to being one shot. Enemies don't scale with your character, so whenever you are high enough level, you'll just run through most of the enemies like they are butter, and you are the knife.
Bugs are pretty annoying, like we've had triple of the same boss on couple occasions, one side quest was glitching out of completion and some more stuff, but overall it didn't matter to me all that much, and I've enjoyed the game quite a lot. It's also pretty short, I've had 2 characters, one had finished the main campaign and all the side quests including finding all hidden weapons and other stuff and I barely reached 30h mark.

@@Mozgodrobil Whatever you have failed to see, is of no concern to me. You fail at comprehending simple sentences. I never said this game was a looter shooter. What I said was that this game has "looter shooter aspects", which it does. Work on your comprehension skills when you read the comments people type. Also, in what way does this game have anything in common with the mediocre Dark Souls style of game?!
Also, my issue with the game not having a run button is quite reasonable, and cannot be overlooked because of the fast travel feature in the game. Having a run button in a twin stick shooter game is a common feature, and it's purpose isn't merely just for traversal, it is also for benefits in combat. The only thing you can do for evasive maneuvers in The Ascent is to roll away, which you can only use couple of times before it needs to recharge. That's stupid.
While there are elements of this game I do like, there were many poor design decisions made in this game done at the expense of fun, and that's outright incompetent. This game needed another year in the oven, because it clearly isn't finished. The devs need a major overhaul update to this game because it is seriously lacking. Mayo covered most of the important issues in his vid, so I don't need to.

Hey Mayo? Two damn solid Twin Stick shooter titles you should check out if you haven't already, are ALIENATION (developed by the Dead Nation people) and the Alien Breed trilogy.
Alienation is only on PS4 due to it being developed by HOUSEMARQUE, and it is pretty much Dead Nation with Aliens, gameplay wise. The main difference being that it is an open map (with looter shooter aspects) versus the traditional advancing level design of Dead Nation. It is very customization based, so you find a large assortment of guns, defensive and offensive gear, etc. I know you hate looter shooter mechanics (I do too), but it's done very well, and it's done more to benefit YOU and your enjoyment of the game. The online coop is damn good and fun as hell. It's a great game. It's fun, trust me.
The Alien Breed trilogy (Evolution, Assault and Descent) is on PC, PS3 and X360, and it is more along the lines of DEAD NATION in gameplay AND traditional level design, except it is pretty much ALIENS the movie made into a trilogy of twin stick shooter games. It's pretty much the closest I've seen to a survival horror version of of a twin stick shooter, what with limited ammo, save points, and the isolation themes. It is also more exploration based, so the level design is tweaked more in favor of that. It's awesome. Play it you haven't already.

I want to make an addend on this comment. I have no room to talk on this matter, I was speaking on what Mayo's opinions are. I would like to retract anything that is said below. I still do think that some of what I say can apply, but I also have not played the game myself. I have no room to talk in this regards if I have not played myself. Maybe I may retune this once I play it myself, but I do want to say that while yes I am a huge fan of Doom Eternal, I can also be a bit blinded with how good it is and how I would love for other games to take inspiration from games I love. That's not what video game design is about, it's about either making your own name or trying something new. The Ascent does a lot to make it's own identity, such as being a twin-stick shooter with a unique atmosphere. While yes there can be improvements, I should also learn to not look at everything through a small lense, but look at the flaws of a game critically in a broader perspective, and most importantly, play it first before I give my own opinions.
So my old comment below will be left, but please understand that after coming of the train of just watching Mayo lay into some of this game, I have a much less emotionally driven mind now. Also, if you have read down this far, I encourage you to do the same as well, don't just listen to what others say about something, play it for yourself before you say anything about it. And if you want to give critiques about the game, do it in a broad sense of how it could improve the game's identity, not make it more like a game you love.
(Below is the old comment, you may still read it and give your thoughts on it)
I really honestly think Doom Eternal has given us a taste for how fast-paced resource-management gameplay can be maximized.
*Doom Eternal:* Can upgrade gun mods but won't ever make one gun overpowered.
*The Ascent:* Can upgrade a gun to the point where all other guns become obsolete
*Doom Eternal:* Very Limited Ammo, forcing the player to utilize different guns in their combat
*The Ascent:* unlimited ammo, allowing the player to use one gun throughout the entire game
*Doom Eternal:* Literally every single gun you have and all equipment types are equipped go you at all times.
*The Ascent:* Two gun limit, one equipment limit, forcing the player to either change equipment constantly or just trudge through the level with what you have.
I'm not saying that the Ascent needs to be like doom eternal, I would much rather have a game that has it's own identity. However, I do think that Doom Eternal has revolutionized more than just the first-person shooter genre, but how to handle fast-paced varied gameplay as a whole.

Dude.. Aren't every game has to be doom to be likeable at all? Jk. There was a meme on this channel about Mayo hating on everything for not being Eternal which is far from true ofc. But jokes aside Doom indeed became some sort of meta for shooters more or less demanding new games to follow its formula or just sink in negative reviews bc "Doom destroyed every FPS". Great example is Vicerafest indie boomer shooter which limits ammo and to be in a face action force player to move and work hard with guns, secrets and use melee to for finishing blow and gib them with a punch or dps at risk of running dry on ammo bc it's the only way to get hearts n heal up.

For a few levels, it would be awesome. Not 20 hours.

I'm just not really a fan of everything in menus being all strobe lighting and red, I didin't like it in Cyberpunk 2077 either. I just find it hard to read sometimes with the world going supernova with muzzle flashes as well

if you enjoy isometric games like this, back in PS2 there's a Game in the Contra Series titled Neo Contra, it's pretty neat, it has Futuristic Aesthetics but the Environments varies between levels.
    I'd recommend it.

Thank god I thought I was just stupid. I see everyone praising this game saying its 10/10 when its a 5 at most. The game is fun and personally I find the story pretty enjoyable (although still severely lacking almost everything), however the amount of glitches can reach a point where the game is almost unplayable, for example half the time when I use an ability my gun vanishes from my hands and I can't shoot or weapon swap (this happened to me in that area you were talking about with the insane hordes of ferals). Quests don't work properly to a point where I have to restart the entire game just to examine a certain item or even just progress forward, and some enemies are bullet sponges to the point where literally any boss fight is easier than trying to kill them. The premise and concept of the game are amazing! Sadly the execution of gameplay is what "flatlines" the game.

I got the game with Gamepass, liked it despite the negative parts in it, and completed it. What i hate the most is that a couple of the achievements (codex ones) are bugged since the game came out and they havent been fixed yet 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great review Mayo, although I have to question your line of argument about "not wanting to live in that world" that you say near the beginning. Maybe I misunderstood the point that you were making, but I don't think fans of particular games like or dislike the environments based on whether or not they would want to live in them.
Worlds like the ones in Dark Souls or Horizon: Zero Dawn for example, are appealing and engaging to behold despite the bleak or post apocalyptic outlook that they portray. And it's being able to explore these worlds that are a far-stretch from reality (for now at least), while knowing we don't really live in them that makes them all the more exciting to discover. Same with many films (although I will admit that I'd never find the world in The Road exciting in any form XD)
