    This mirror consists of 6 small mirrors in poor condition, due to heavy rain and termites, was moved and replaced by a mirror in one piece in october 2012 (destroyed by a huge leopard) and then replaced by a larger mirror 240x122 cm after replaced by a mirror 240x122 cm after a (slight) contact with an elephant tusk

    What's really amazing is that they actually caught a wild mirror on film. They are extremely rare and very difficult to find, often blending into their surroundings. Even when one of these are found, they barely stay in one spot for then 10 minuets at a time. Truly an incredible find.

      In animals as in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. It is the result of mirror training, easier at home for young humans with the help of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. Among primates, elephants and felids, in the insecurity of the jungle learning with his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. Not all animals have the ability to recognize themselves even after learning. Great apes can recognize themselves, including black-backed gorillas. In silverback gorillas who cannot look straight in the eyes without challenging themselves, their mirror training cannot be done because they avoid looking at the mirror where their reflection is also silverback.
      Some animal species perform inconsistently on the mirror test. Chimps and orangutans have unambiguously passed, but they don’t always.
      To date: only Humans, Orangutans, Chimpanzees, Bonobos, Gorillas (blackback), Rhesus Macaques, Bottlenose Dolphins, Asian Elephants, Orcas, Grey parrots (African/Gabon grey Parrots) and Magpies have shown the ability to recognize their own reflections after an even long training in the mirror for some ones.
      *No African elephant has so far passed the self recognition test in a mirror. No cat as leopard, tiger or homecat, no dog passed this test.* Please read the description attached to each of my 160 videos published on my CZcams channel you will know very interesting informations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle czcams.com/users/XHB06400CANNESvideos

      @@patriciawalker7190 Merci! *If a synthetic mirror is perfectly usable in an apartment, on the other hand in the forest the different points of light created by the sun through the canopy, produce false reflections in the mirrors. Synthetic mirrors and reflective adhesive tapes do not stay flat in bad weather. Reflections are therefore distorted images. So I use glass mirrors (83x120x0,5cm) that I glue, with double-sided adhesive, to a 22 m/m marine plywood fixed on a wooden frame with 4 legs and 4 buttresses at the back. the leopard thinks: "this leopard that I see is not a leopard since it doesn't smell like a leopard at all", but neither is it my reflection in a puddle of water since the puddles of water are horizontal and not vertical. One more thing I have learned: that there is something similar to the puddles of water and streams in which you see yourself but that instead of being horizontal they are vertical and instead of being water they are of an unknown hard substance

      A comment like yours is comforting;
      - after reading numerous comments calling for the dismantling of these sadistic mirrors,
      - after my wife and I have spent days alone in the Gabonese forest to maintain our mirrors and many photographic traps, change memory cards, batteries, clean lenses, remove fallen branches in their field of vision, walk up the creek beds to find areas where the animals cross to install new traps etc... Soaked by tornadoes, the body is covered with insect bites of all kinds (horse flies, gorilla flies, tsetse flies, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work is increasing due to the 95% humidity level. This is a choice. Thanks again. Check out my other homemade videos of the channel and don't forget to read the attached description each time. 2:25 I didn't want to put my theory on this out because it was weak, but now I have more to stand on (pun not intended). The big cats behavior seems to be the thought process of: another cat stuck in a box, or at least one of the first impressions. If I were to put in order the thought process it would look like:
    1. Is that another cat?
    2. Are you trapped? How did you get in there?
    3. I can't break it, so I'll wait for you to come out.
    4. You can't come out, you only do as I do, and I cannot feel or smell you.
    5. Interesting.
    I'm not so sure if they ever realize it is their own image, they don't really do anything to suggest that they full understand it is themselves.

      @bliskin8847 Před 3 lety +3

      It is not normal behavior for a wild leopard to walk to another one and start playing patty cake. Animals, perceive the world much differently than us, for example some have a sense of smell that is heightened beyond our comprehension (there is a video of a dog that doesn't recognize his owner after his dramatic weight loss, however, one sniff and the dog losses it with affection) . So it is quite clear that the Leopard knows that the image is not a real animal, by the way he relaxes and plays with it. It will never be clear if he knows that it is himself or just a moving image of a Leopard that is mimicking him. Some "scientist" use the experiment of putting a dot on the forehead of the animal to see if they notice it in the mirror, but that doesn't eliminate the possibility that the animal might not care the spot is there and thus not pay any attention to it.

      @trials6502 Před 3 lety +4

      @@bliskin8847 Right. I was generalizing the behaviour from several videos. It wasn't until this one that a Leapard actually jumped on top of the mirror, as if to get inside of it.
      I saw that video with the dog and the man that had undergone significant weightloss.
      Back to the more important details: In some videos the cats charge directly at the mirror ready to attack, I assume these are territorial matters. They also seem to understand that the cat they see cannot hurt them, changing from aggressive to slightly irritated. Then over the course of time the behavior is pure wonderment. It was then this Leopard jumped onto the mirror I was somewhat sure that they believe it's a cat in an object.
      I'm going to research whether or not time changes anything (by video lol, I am not doing any real academic review).

      @@bliskin8847 there is no way the leopard's mother is unable to understand the principle behind mirrors. She sees the child moving in on the mirror and she sees the reflection doing the same thing only opposite on the "far-close" axis. Many CZcamsrs are surprised that animals facing large mirrors do not recognize themselves and that they are even afraid of their image or see rivals when they are used to seeing their own reflections in ponds, lakes and rivers when they drink from them. Several times while bending down in sunny weather over a pool of aquatic plants with a dark bottom, I saw, on the surface of the water, my shadow but not the reflection of my face, whereas I saw that of my wife placed 2 meters away from me. I believe that on the surface of the water, one's own image cannot be reflected perpendicularly but distinctly laterally. This is why animals could not learn from the mirror by drinking from lakes, ponds or rivers. @@XHB06400CANNES I think self-image-reflection recognition is greatly contextually depended. A large mirror that reflects crystal clear images from unusually vertical angles have never existed in the natural environment of the animals, also the concept of mirrors surely took time in hominid evolution. I think this is the primary reason, NOT that they don't have the concept of self, given enough mirrors around and time, they'll figure it out!
