  • Armadillidium gestroi isopods are some of the best pet invertebrates. In this video, we look at Armadillidium gestroi as a pet invertebrate. They are one of the largest Armadillidium species, and have beautiful yellow markings, making them one of my favorite pet isopods.

    I just found your channel and I’m so glad I did! Inverts aren’t really my thing, but this video was enjoyable none the less. You are clearly very knowledgeable on the subject and the videography is amazing!

    Thanks for this introduction into this species. I'm going to get two starter cultures of A. gestroi tomorrow. One's the normal morph with yellow colouration, the other has been selected by their keeper with white colouration. They are basically my first isopods, but I watched some videos of yours and Supreme Gecko and hope I can make it work.

    This is so interesting to me. I originally started with your site for fish foods. I knew people collected isopods but not at this level. Hope i don't get hooked on them, i have too many tanks now😆😆😆 . Super information 👍

    Great video Rus. Excellent information as usual. For me, I really enjoy A. gestroi but I have other Armadillidium that I prefer more. Still a challenging and rewarding isopod to work with (and thanks again for the shoutout).

      @@Aquarimax i really like the A. vulgare Punta Cana. The little jelly beans are so cute. Also, the A. vulgare Orange Vigor are up there too. But that's what makes this hobby so interesting- everyone can have different favs.

    Hi Russ! I JUST got some of these beauties on the weekend and I hope they eventually breed for me too! I have had luck with Magic Potions and I just acquired some Zebras too! I have Dairy Cows and Powder Oranges that are breeding like CRAZY...but they're very prolific anyway. Thanks for all your informative videos!

    I call them Wolverine Isopods, as their beautiful pattern is similar to the Michigan Wolverines football helmets.
    I can't afford High yellow zebras yet, as they're even more expensive. But even then, these guys are always going to hold the number one spot in my heart.

      @@Aquarimax I agree that these are just a little more, tailored to my taste let's say. I think I heard you say in another video, you are partial to Yellow isopods. And I am finding out the same. My favorite color itself is blue, so this color pairing is just perfect for me.

      All of my life, I have had what people call lucid dreams. And I often say that we view the world through the lens of our own biases. It wasn't until recently, and I just turned 41, that I realized not everyone had dreams in the same way. It was just kind of stunning.

    I love isopods! 😁
    I have dairy cow isopods and dwarf purple isopods in my bioactive enclosures.
    Also springtails.
    I almost never see the dwarf purples, but they're very small anyways.
    But the dairy cows make themselves known a lot more.
    I also have two different species of darkling beetles.

    i got new millipedes today i got 1 purple ivory millipede 1 smoky oak millipede

    Is there any way to see which species are native to your area? So if anything escapes it's not potentially invasive.

      David Sastre That is an important consideration. I ended up getting a permit for selected species with APHIS. That is one way to help protect the environment from potential issues.

    What age will they start breeding? And when they do, how many will they have? And how often? To be honest you say their slow breeding is a con, but for me it's a pro because I don't want to quickly be overwhelmed by hundreds!

      I am not sure of the exact age, but I believe mine were slightly over 1.5 years before they started to breed. They seem to have big litters…perhaps 50 or so? I am not sure how often, it is hard to say because each colony has multiple females.

    I love my gestroi! They're my favorite of the 4 species of isopods I have.
    I wish they would have babies, I've had them for probably 7 months🤞

    Would there be any problem with housing them with some Armadilum Vulgare? I have them in a Ball python enclosure that I had already put about 10 A. Vulgare inside. 50 Gal bioactive tank with lots of hiding and food.

      One species will likely outcompete the other over time, but you could try it.

    Hey Rus. I want to get some isopods for my Costa Rican zebra(aphonapelma seemani)tarantualas bioactive enclosure and I’m not sure which species to get. Do you have a great starter species that you would recommend for a 10 gallon bioactive tarantula enclosure.?

      RoostaCODM Hi! What kind of humidity is required by your tarantulas? If it is fairly high, I would recommend dwarf white isopods.

      As far as I'm aware, isopods can't climb on (smooth) plastic surfaces. I just place the food on the substrate and they eat no bother.

    I have an isopod enclosure but would rather catch them in the wild than buy them. Do you have any tips for catching isopods?

      Ignorant Ice Look under logs, flat rocks, or in leaf litter, in areas where there is moisture. You can also look in the early morning when there is still dew...they tend to be more commonly out and about at such times.
