Lyrics : I am a little beggarman and begging I have been For three score or more in this little isle of green I'm known from the Liffey down to Segue And I'm known by the name of old Johnny Dhu Of all the trade's that's going, sure begging is the best For when a man is tired, he can sit down and rest He can beg for his dinner, he has nothing else to do Only cut around the corner with his old rig-a-doo I slept in the barn, down at Caurabawn A wet night came on and I slept 'till the dawn With holes in the roof and the rain coming through And the rats and the cats, they were playing peek-a-boo When who did I waken but the woman of the house With her white spotty apron and her calico blouse She began to frighten and I said "boo Aarah, don't be afraid mam it's only Johnny Dhu" I met a little flaxy-haired girl one day "Good morning little flaxy-haired girl" I did say "Good morning little beggarman, a how do you do With your rags and you tags and you old rig-a-doo" I'll buy a pair of leggings, a collar and a tie And a nice young lady I'll fetch by and by I'll buy a pair of goggles and I'll colour them blue And an old fashioned lady I will make her too Over the road with my pack on my back Over the fields with my great heavy sack With holes in my shoes and my toes peeping through Singing skinny-me-rink a doodle o and old Johnny Dhu I must be going to bed for it's getting late at night The fire's all raked and out goes the light So now you've heard the story of my old rig-a-doo It's good-bye and God be with you says old Johnny Dhu
Same I'm from America but often complimented on my irish and irish accent (no it's not the lucky charms guy. And I always make sure when I do it to not go down that road.) i even had a full blown conversation with a guy from galway and he actually thought I was irish aswell!! But then I started talking normally he was like "What the fucks going on here!?!?!" And I just laughed. I'm Mexican by the way. Even though one day I'm moving to Ireland for sure no doubt about it.
Finton Treacy of San Francisco used to sing this at parties. My party piece was 'The Whistlin' Gypsy Rover. Sixties were great in this then great city of the patron saint of animals.

Lyrics :
I am a little beggarman and begging I have been
For three score or more in this little isle of green
I'm known from the Liffey down to Segue
And I'm known by the name of old Johnny Dhu
Of all the trade's that's going, sure begging is the best
For when a man is tired, he can sit down and rest
He can beg for his dinner, he has nothing else to do
Only cut around the corner with his old rig-a-doo
I slept in the barn, down at Caurabawn
A wet night came on and I slept 'till the dawn
With holes in the roof and the rain coming through
And the rats and the cats, they were playing peek-a-boo
When who did I waken but the woman of the house
With her white spotty apron and her calico blouse
She began to frighten and I said "boo
Aarah, don't be afraid mam it's only Johnny Dhu"
I met a little flaxy-haired girl one day
"Good morning little flaxy-haired girl" I did say
"Good morning little beggarman, a how do you do
With your rags and you tags and you old rig-a-doo"
I'll buy a pair of leggings, a collar and a tie
And a nice young lady I'll fetch by and by
I'll buy a pair of goggles and I'll colour them blue
And an old fashioned lady I will make her too
Over the road with my pack on my back
Over the fields with my great heavy sack
With holes in my shoes and my toes peeping through
Singing skinny-me-rink a doodle o and old Johnny Dhu
I must be going to bed for it's getting late at night
The fire's all raked and out goes the light
So now you've heard the story of my old rig-a-doo
It's good-bye and God be with you says old Johnny Dhu
Thank you
how can you not love these guys :)
Well,er...you just don´t.
(Don´t not love them I mean)
@@gconthemic2502 meaning what exactly?
@@The_Republic_of_Ireland they had a bad relationship with George Murphy when he joined the band, in an unfair way
@@gconthemic2502 what happened?
@@The_Republic_of_Ireland they weren't happy with the reaction he got after only coming in the door, and weren't willing to split things 4 ways
I'm proud to say I can sing this entire song at full speed.
Im actually at the point where I've heard and recited this so many times thatthis feels slow. Jimmy Murphy, however...

I'm Serbian, heard this about a decade ago, and since then, it's still a tune I hear in this exact interpretation that makes me just smiley and giddy.

brilliant!!! im only half irish but im still 100% proud to be irish
I doesn’t matter if your 100% or 0.0000001% Irish, you will still find yourself trying to sing along

This song got me up and dancing about!!😆🇮🇪
Just epic!! & Finbarr is a Clancy from Carrick-On-Suir so very special to me indeed
Does anyone else just appreciate the normal and original-ness of Irish folk over annoying crap you hear on the radio here in America?
This is a Lambeg tune
Awesome Irish Tunes!!!
The Irish equivalent of Rap God
I'd love to see a drunk Irishman rap Rap God. Wouldn't that be a laugh.
Lol you should listen to rattlin bog
Ney my boy. Go look up Seamus kennedy rattling bog. That be a song that dirt bag eminem couldn't sing.
@@xpitifulnickelx9359 three great minds here at least! If they think this is a challenge, they've never heard Rattlin Bog or Road to Dublin. 😂

It takes an absolute CHAD to keep up with the lyrics😎

Thanks! Never could have figured that one out. After hearing this played as a bluegrass tune on fiddle and guitar, this provides such context.
What happens when you put a group of fun-loving folk on a very green island for 2 thousand years. From WB Yeats to Mickey Collins #Slainté
and then violently oppress them for a third of it! don't forget the oppression, it's a very important part of the equation
Listen to this at 2X speed lol
thanks for the sugsten
