      I don't deny that it has its limitations, but a landed side kick to the body/hip/legs hurts badly. I do believe in the limitations, but are you REALLY catching side kicks when a good fighter is mixing up their techniques and not throwing a slow controlled technique 🤔
      Also a full power side kick to the forearms does not sound pleasent...

      I use side kicks and for me it is useful, but I use practically only one version which is a counter attack with the front leg going towards the opponent Because if he's closer the jumping back kick is better

      I am sure you know better than me. You can always faint the left low kick to draw the side kick in, then parry and kick the leg. But then he may recognise that and throw hook kick instead. It’s definitely not easy or simple to deal with as wonderboy demonstrated against some of the best.

      The Chinese kickboxers use the side kick a lot.
      It occasionally works but I'm still not a believer in using it for everyone.

      Yes its great in MMA because it can set up offense to the head like a hook kick you dont know whats coming.Example Chito Vera vs Rob Font , that side kick won him the fight ,countered Fonts jab and dropped him with the Hook kick multiple times .In kickboxing its not woth it , its easier to defend with the gloves and a roudhouse scores more in the judgea eyes and rightfully so fighters dont use it.

      @@18Hands it's true, Bennie the jet and so many others used it well. I used it quite fine in my younger days, but now I'm old, I don't generate power in that way anymore due to knee injuries. Now I prefer all kinds of front kicks. A side kick to the belly, stomach or solar plexus, is very effective, but we need to be fast, flexible, and use it in the right timing and situation.

    My karate coach says: side kicks are for kicking sideways. Meaning: if you happen to be standing sideways to someone that's coming at you, you can keep them at distance with the side kick so you can reset. But turning to the side just to do a side kick, or standing sideways to begin with - not really a thing in that particular style.

      Precisely.
      Next step is orientating yourself sideways towards someone (originally) in front of you, e. g. with a circular motion. Could be on purpose, i. e. in a combination, or because you swung and missed and then naturally follow up with a side kick.
      But outside of sports fighting, being attacked from the side is a far more realistic situation.

      This exactly. It's the same thing as a spin kick. If you take a big step to "invert" and then throw the spin you're going to miss 9/10 times. But if you miss something else or for some reason end up inverted in relation to your opponent, then throw a spin kick.
      Side kick is the same thing. It's usually not going to work if you're changing your stance just to throw the side kick, but if/when you end up in that position the side kick is great.

      I do Taekwondo, and the side or bladed stance feels just as comfortable as the front stance; your stances and kicks should be ambidextrous. Like others have said, there's a time and place for every kick, but you CAN deliberately use different stances instead of only "if something happens". Whether your opponent is a tank or a striker, if you can comfortably constantly flow between different stances you'll throw them off and have a definitive upper hand; you'll also have distance control. Making your opponent fight at the edge of his range is my favorite, as they tend to get mad and over extend and leave things open - which for me are big targets lol

    I think it's more important to be comfortable in the situations where you get crowded. If you're in the pocket and you can't move back or out, you're going to have to adjust to the situation. You either square up and exchange or square up to fight yourself out to regain position. Side kick is a tool and it's more important to know when to use it, than to always use it.

      Side kick is my favorite kick to throw against people over zealous at charging or that punch a lot! It's a really sneaky counter that can be used when people think they "gotcha!" And I'm like "nope, now right now at least!"

      I like all kicks.. I practice a lot of different types of kicks. Quick low snap kicks, Strong low kicks, low crescent kicks, low spins. To the front, to the side. Back kicks, heel stomps, reverse spin kicks.. Laying on the ground kicking a standing target.. Getting up and kicking. When I was young I used to get as low as I could and leap as high as I could and throw different kicks in variations. Even Donkey kicks but that's not something you'd see in mma. As Steve's pointed out and I 100% agree, it's about when you use them. Their are the kicks that I call the risk vs rewards kicks, the ones that take long to get off no matter how fast you are, yeah it might connect, but more often the person would get a swift snap kick to the face and down. They're still good kicks and people should learn them, practice them, but they have to know what really works against a good fighter and what works for them.

      I get fucked at that range if I'm not allowed elbows . If I am I spoke lead then right then post back to long guard where nobody is fast enough to hit me and can just keep landing hard sing counters .

      That’s something I notice a lot in the gym - guys who come from karate or tkd backgrounds tend to do well enough on the outside, but struggle a lot against inside pressure.

      @@JaredClaunch That's about their mentality as fighters. Footwork is very important but people forget things when they fight. I've always been a fighter and I'll kick someone in the shin like a girl but a lot harder lol and then stomp their feet while charging in if I have too. My brother used to charge into me with his shoulder and body and headbutt me at the same time to stop me from kicking him.
      I wrestled with my 2 brothers and when I got older he was always attacking me, like not just brotherly fights, the first fight I ever had he choked me out and left me unconscious in a pool of my own blood, I was 10 years old. I haven't lost a fight since. And he'd attack me a lot. I took tkd at 10, but it wasn't until Matsubayashi Ryu as Senpai at 15 did I learn quick power techniques that allowed me to put real ooomph and speed behind every one of my hits.
      I'm also a good dancer, like more than line dancing dancing, my younger bro and I, we used to do like Kid and Play dances and routines for people at high school dances and breakdancing stuff and they'd go nuts over it, especially when we'd do it to Abba or something.. So I'm very comfortable with low kicks and sweeps and transitional kicks.
      Stepping in and using just your movement to throw you opponent off as a strike and situating your legs to protect yourself. It doesn't have to hurt but it can push them off balance enough to make your strike even more effective.

    Great video. The biggest pro for sidekicks if you're good at them is that people training kickboxing are often not good at dealing with them 😂
    Also if you're doing light contact, point, or full contact without Lowick rulesets, a lot of the cons are smaller. So people should take what they compete in up to consideration.

      By kneeing the shin or leg?

      @@remyhavoc4463 normally footwork works well, but you need to angle out if you're opponent can do multiple sliding sidekicks. Timing is also quite important. You could just sidekick yourself as well.
      But yeah sidekick works really well for scoring points, and in many formats you lose too many points if you just decide to eat them.

    Great convo! I find side kicks effective to recover from a missed roundhouse kick. If the opponent moves backward and I kick the air, I bounce back with a side kick (or back kick) to intercept any upcoming attack. Also it works with opponents that like to attack from angles.

    Much love to all the channels involved in these collaborations. Anyways, in regards to Wushu, Wushu is divided into two categories; Sanda (formerly San Shou) which is the kickboxing and wrestling aspects of Wushu and Toulu which is the forms and judged like kata in Karate.

    I like the side kick but I don't throw it often. If I see a window to use it I will take it. A side kick landing flush on the solar plexus is super effective, but it takes a perfect set up. I once accidentally knocked the wind out of a sparing partner with a 20-30% power side kick. I baited him into a cross and as his torso was square with me I popped my heel right into his breathing muscle. it was great, but I have not been able to pull it off since lol.

    the first point is really valid,.. yet avoidable if you have a good high,fast chamber, and the coordination to go full pivot and while doing it you release the kick when is aligned with your oponent you can totally throw it from a more square stance. ( thats part of why i love the side kick, because it can look like you are throwing a round house but it suddenly transforms)

    My favorite set up for this in kickboxing or M.T is off of a big roundhouse or missed kick, you’ll end up in a bladed stance and this can either be a great setup or follow through when missing. Depending on who I’m sparring I add a lil delay to the opponent to throw them off. If they try evading but don’t get out far enough I add the extra pendulum step or shuffle and kick them long range.

    Excellent presentation. Many years ago when I competed I used a hop side kick to throw my opponent off balance and frustrate them. It's a very safe technique because you're closing distance rapidly and there's a good deal of power behind it. It made them think twice about moving forward and allowed me to set the pace when I wanted to slow things down.

    Why stance must be always the same in a fight?
    Why change stances as you change your punchs, kicks, elbows and knees is wrong?
    Side stance is better in long range and squared stance in short range, simple like this

    🙂I have a totally different opinion from Seith however I do use sidekicks often because after missing a right hook or right kick I end up on side stance and usually my opponent will think perfect time to counter and that's perfect timing for me to throw the sidekick... 😁😁

    If you put your hands on the floor as you use IcyMike’s close range side/back kick, it becomes a Taido technique.
    It adds more force because you’re using your glutes & hamstrings while bracing with your upper body to either push into the kick or roll away.
    All while keeping your head off the centerline of course.
    Edit: It’s called the Shrimp Kick from Taido. Jesse Enkamp did a video on it.

    The big factor is whether you're working with a boundary. It's really hard to keep moving laterally, so you're prone to getting cornered. Case in point, Wonderboy is probably the most prolific user in MMA(where the boundary has the biggest impact on fights) while having some of the most diligent cage craft and lateral movement. For most, it will be too narrow of a situation to create/exploit regularly.

    The best examples of the karate stance is stephen thompson, conor mcgregor, and henry cejudo. Stephen is very kick heavy and evasive. Conor shows how it works with boxing. Being an evasive counter presure fighter. And henry uses karate to help set up his wrestling.

    To add on to what mike said you could also use a Yoko geri keage (side snap kick that's uses the ridge of the foot as the point of contact) it's used really high in sports karate now days but it original is meant so to be a lower kick at close range

    If you are in the pocket and like sidekicks hooks are your best friend. In the pocket you will want your guard up and be more square. But throwing the hook punch will help you get sideways again. This is an old Bill Superfoot Wallace trick, you can find videos of him teaching it at seminars.

    As for someone who did allot of taekwondo growing up and ended up doing muay thai and boxing the side kick was my go to kick whenever I feel like I need to use my foot as a jab and having a gym full of clinchers and "pure" thai specialist it was great because growing up people always told me taekwondo kicks won't work but it does as long as your thai style is good and for someone who is focusing in western boxing and still fighting muay thai it does help me allot but when I train muay thai I try to do more knees and clinching

    feint the sidekicks into hook kicks/ roundhouse kicks. It keeps the guard moving.

    I sometimes like to throw my side kick as more of a turning teep/pushkick. Allows for a little more range and power and throws off peoples timing a bit as well.

    Huge tip I picked up. They only work in an open stance. you have to use rear leg or spin in a close stance. Otherwise it's just better to front kick

    I fight using a more squared stance most of the time, and I love the side kick. I transition to it from faking a front kick. Bring the knee up for a front kick, roll the heel, turn the hip, the knee comes across, and fire. Really smooth motion if you practice it. Hits HARD.

    You can use side kick from a squared stance, just set up with round house kick and if it miss throw side kick from the same leg
