Ride New Zealand's Earthquake Railway aboard the Coastal Pacific (train) along the Kaikoura Coast

  • This is my favourite New Zealand train ride, at times it feels as though our wheels are running in the surf, where else can you see fur seals, dolphins, surf-riders, amazing turquoise sea, ribbon rivers and stunning mountains from the comfort of railway carriage?
    The train was suspended after 14th November 2016 due to damage to the rail line caused by the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake and that could well have been the end of the story. Fortunately New Zealanders are at their best when faced with adversity, they fought against the odds and the service was restored for the 2019 summer season.
    I had used this service several times before the quake and I was keen to see the newly restored route in operation. The scale of the changes took me by surprise as did the amount of work still required. I drove the parallel road route the following day, work was taking place on and around the railway at many locations, it is a wonder that they manage to run trains at all. To get some idea of the task faced after the quake, please click on this link - www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1...
    If you’ve taken a look at the photos shown at the link above, you will have seen the devastation for yourself. The quake might have destroyed both the road and railway in many places, but the views from the window are still as spectacular as ever, I hope you can find time to join me for a ride on the Coastal Pacific.

    Fabulous! What a phenomenal effort to reinstate the railway and main highway. What a fab way to soak in New Zealand's magnificent scenery - almost no need to hike, lol!!! Most complex earthquake ever the way it ripped through known, and unknown faults, and moved parts of the South Island 5m closer to the North Island - WOW! Nicely filmed, thanks Tim. Ciao.

      Hi, I have so much respect for New Zealander's, it would have been easier to walk away and let nature reclaim the coast in favour of the inland route, but they chose to bite the bullet and rebuild both the road and rail routes, allowing tourists to once again enjoy one of the most amazing coastlines in the world either by road or rail. Every time I visit New Zealand's South Island, Earthquakes have changed the landscape, nowhere more so than Christchurch and Lyttelton. Cheers. Tim.

      @@princesswearshikingboots4479 Hi, I saw Christchurch before it was damaged, then again shortly after the first quake, I returned again a year or so after the second quake, for me container city summed everything up, New Zealanders at their best, making the most of the stuff at hand. I also visited last year, the church looked so sad, the first time I saw it was at Christmas 2005, there was a nativity scene above the main door, the city was vibrant back then, it's taking a long time to recover, I believe the council have taken over the church now with the intention of restoring it as a tourist centre, I wish them well because somehow the church was the heart of the city, once it is fixed the Christchurch heart will beat again with tourists once again filling the parks, streets, shops, trams and cafes. Cheers. Tim.

      Hello Heinz, the railway and road have been re-routed in a number of places where the mountain slipped and blocked the way ahead. New bridges, tunnels and avalanche shelters have been built, when it is all finished the road will be much improved to the detriment of the railway. The coastline is still awesome, the Kiwis are to be congratulated, they are a small nation with a big heart, they didn't take the easy option and close the railway, I hope subsequent governments stand up up to the road lobby so that the railway will once again become part of an integrated transport system with road delivering locally and rail covering the long distance journeys.

    Nice vid, beautiful day. We were in Kaikoura in early Mar 2019 - snowed the night before on the coastal mountains - but hot down by the bay/port - shorts and sunglasses. Gorgeous drive even with some significant construction delays. Nobody works too hard in NZ - seemed like either smoko time, lunch or in some sort of discussion about the next break.

      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, Kaikoura is so photogenic when the mountains are snow capped. My next videos to be uploaded are taken in and around Kaikoura, exploring the inland and coastal routes to Hanmer Springs, both highly scenic. The work ethic in New Zealand fascinates me, the population is small, yet the grass verges and flowerbeds are well looked after and the towns looked loved, I wish I could say the same about my home town in the UK, sadly the place is a mess. I think New Zealanders carefully consider their moves to achieve the most with the least effort, my son moved to NZ about 15 years ago, he loves it, they work their socks off during the week and have a ball at the weekends. One thing I found interesting was all the activity actually taking place on the railway, diggers, lorries, people working just a few minutes before a train was due, yet the tracks were cleared for the train to pass and a few minutes later all the earth moving equipment was back on the railway working again. I do agree New Zealanders have mastered the art of looking relaxed during their breaks.

    Hi Tim, I'm looking at this video on my computer monitor but I'm going to put it on my big screen. Looks like a nice scenic trip. I wanted to ask you a questions. Many of your videos are more than an hour long. I'm wondering how you manage battery life. I don't see breaks anywhere which would indicate you have stopped to change batteries or charge them. Also what software do you use to use to edit. I have an Apple iMac so I use the iMovie app which has most of what I need.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 4 lety

      Hi, this a very scenic ride, I've taken this train 3 times now, I see something new every time. GoPro cameras can run from an external battery for 6 or 7 hours so long as the memory card has enough capacity. If you do chose to try this, contact me and I'll let you know which batteries to use and how to set the camera up. I use Pinnacle Studio Ultimate simply because it is what I am used to, it is updated every year, some versions are aweful others preform well. I also use Mercalli steady software, 80% of the time it does a good job, 20% of the time it gets it totally wrong. It also pays to convert GoPro footage to .avi before importing it into your editing package. The quality of GoPro footage always suffers when played back from CZcams, even though the original is good, I don't know why this happens, it is a bit frustrating. IMovie is a good package, ideal for most purposes.

You were lucky to get cab rides, you must have some great memories from those days. The trains that replaced the UK High-speed trains are a real downgrade, being very uncomfortable with a high revving engine under every carriage making them extremely noisy, they are just about acceptable when travelling first class whilst drawing juice from the overhead wires. There used to be a time when new trains were better than the ones they replaced, that's not the case today here in the UK.

      @@tigertiger1699 Sadly here in the UK we didn't appreciate rail until it was too late. Some lines have been reopened but the costs involved are astronomical. As a regular tourist to New Zealand I am baffled as to why most of New Zealand's top tourist destinations are no longer served by passenger trains, places like Rotorua, Napier, New Plymouth, Dunedin and Kingston for lake steamers to Queenstown. I can only assume that New Zealand doesn't take tourism seriously any more, forcing visitors to hire camper-vans or cars before venturing out onto roads dominated by Chinese tourists who forget to drive on the correct side of the road. I travel by rail all around the world and when I speak to other travellers about New Zealand, most aren't aware that NZ even operates any passenger trains. I love visiting New Zealand, but for those who don't drive which is a surprisingly large number of people, visiting New Zealand isn't an option unless you are happy to be herded around like animals in a tour bus. NZ railways are an asset, but once they are gone they are gone forever.

    Great video Tim but just a few questions to ask. Why was the train going so slow most of the way through kaikoura there's a video of it speeding through in 2018 not long after it was rebuilt surely a year later they didnt have to rebuild more track at the time you filmed it.. Also are you scared of tunnels cause you hardly shot any video going through the tunnel thats also one of the best parts and you cut away most of the time just as the train enters the tunnel. Also if possible next time you go on this train is it possible to place a mic somwhere safe but near the wheels to get the click clack sound that is by far the best part of the train is that awesome noise love it.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 4 lety

      Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. I believe we may have been travelling slowly because the line ahead was closed to allow work on the track, it takes time to get all the machinery clear to allow trains to pass. The clearance in those tunnels is very tight, shortly after I filmed this video, passengers were banned from the viewing car after problems with people leaning out too far. The carriages have now been modified to stop people leaning out. The click clack has almost disappeared now that most of the old rails have been replaced with long welded track, the overriding noise for much of the journey was the wheels squealing as they negotiate the many bends along the way. I also miss the click clack once so familiar when travelling by train.

    We need to get people to support this railway to picton I wrote to kiwirail last week and asked why they only travel from september to april and not the months in between and the guy replied it is because of low demand somehow we need to increase demand in this country i feel its more than they are letting on cause this train ran for many many years with low demand and they still manged to make money and keep it going. Now with this dam Covid19 the future for kiwirail is a worry maybe now they will be forced to run it out of season even if its just to get some money coming in as they will have lost a fortune sitting idle for a month going nowhere.

      The trains in New Zealand have sadly gone the same way as those in my home country "England", passenger enjoyment is no longer the main concern. The old timers at KiwiRail and Scenic Journeys still welcome passengers with a genuine affection and a desire to share their wonderful scenery, sadly its all gone horribly wrong with the next generation of railway workers and it really hurts me to criticize KiwiRail because they have been wonderful in the past. On both the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific it was very noticeable that the next generation of railway staff have lost the ability to communicate in a friendly yet clear and firm manner, instead they make passengers feel uncomfortable and unwanted by barking orders at them, some of this may be due to the fact that communicating with Chinese tourists can be challenging.
      I had made arrangements well in advance to place a camera in the cab of the Coastal Pacific train to shoot a film to compare the line before and after the quake. I arrived at Christchurch station where I made myself known to the ScenicRail staff who were aware I was visiting and why, on the first day I was due to travel on the TranzAlpine for which I hadn't made formal arrangements, but I was hopeful. The very pleasant ScenicRail guy was well aware of my earlier videos, they are often watched by people researching activities to do on their holidays, he contacted the train crew to let them know, it was then I hit the problem that was to defeat me, the never present Health and Safety person who'd caused me problems all along was still on holiday, either this person spends their life on holiday or they are just an excuse to say "No". In the past the train manager simply spoke to the driver or if I'd made arrangements before my visit, I gave the name of the lady I'd made arrangements with, a quick phone call and all was OK. The second day I arrived to travel on the TranzCoastal or Coastal Pacific as it is know now, where I was met by a somewhat disillusioned ScenicRail guy who simply said "they spend tens of thousands on their own ineffective CZcams videos and say 'No' to the guy who puts their trains in front of 100's of thousands of potential customers", he was embarrassed and angry, because he knows that KiwiRail are no longer serious about getting people onto their trains. People who are often making a once in a lifetime train journey should be made to feel special and treated well, not made to feel like they are a nuisance getting in the way of running an efficient railway, after all what is the point of a train with no passengers.
      I met very few Europeans during the month I spent in NZ, most of those I did meet were either young backpackers or people taking that holiday of a lifetime using a lump sum from their pension fund. Most tourists were Chinese, they don't frequent local shops and cafes or mix with other tourists, unlike the Japanese who were often good fun to meet up with. NZ has a big problem, how to get Europeans to visit a destination that is expensive and a long way from home? A good place to start is for those who have visited to give good feedback, that requires them to have a good experience in the first place. I love NZ and making good use of the railways including those to places like Rotorua, Napier, Dunedin and New Plymouth is vital, the services will never make money, but spreading the billions of dollars tourists spend to benefit the whole nation is vital to New Zealand's tourist economy, filling the roads with dangerous Chinese tourists in camper vans is a recipe for disaster. A company that knows how to treat and look after tourists is realjourneys.co.nz It would pay KiwiRail to send employees to see how ”Real Journeys” do things.
      If I was in charge of KiwiRail Scenic Journey’s the first thing I’d do is become a travel agent linking up with all tourist attractions to sell New Zealand as a straight forward joined up holiday, only coach companies are doing it at the moment. New Zealand is not an easy place to tour unless you know what you are doing, to start with far too many museums and attractions are only open on the third weekend of the month, if they are guaranteed visitors they can open to suit those visitors. NZ has a so called Green government, now is the time to show its green credentials and get tourists moving around the country using less air travel without covering the place in roads, the solution already exists, it is the railways. Sorry it is a long rant but I felt it needs saying before it is too late. I live in a country that made all the mistakes NZ is in the process of making, Dr Beeching has not gone down in the history books as a hero.Take care in these difficult times. Tim.

      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 4 lety

      Hi Neil, I enjoyed this trip enormously and the video took a long time to put together, I knew it would not attract high viewing figures from the outset, but for me CZcams is personal, it's about me sharing my view of this wonderful planet, "Yes" I love trains, but I also love travel. Unfortunately travel videos seem to attract low viewing figures if the magic word "Cab Ride" is missing from the metadata. I have travelled all over New Zealand, capturing some truly awesome sights, most of which will never be seen on this channel, unless I make a conscious decision to share what I want to share, rather than what CZcams wants me to share. The new CZcams creator page is offensive, its about CZcams, as opposed to helping creators to be creative, its about winning formulas, studying their analytics to find out what makes videos succeed. I don't make videos for money, I know I'll never be able to give up the day job. I do have some more driver's Eye View videos in the can, I also intend to feature more travel videos knowing my channel will suffer as a result. CZcams will start loosing creators if they continue failing to recognise that most of use do it for fun and pushing us in their preferred direction will cause people to give up or look for other ways to share their content as I have started to do with 24trains.tv . To their credit CZcams did sort my problem with czcams.com/users/pepeibra which came as a relief because I almost lost this channel once when another CZcamsr stole my videos, uploaded them as his own, then claimed I'd broken his copyright. Copyright wise CZcams are getting their act together making it much easier to remove plagiarised videos. I turn a bling eye to people who use exerts from my videos up to five minutes long as background for their music compositions or readings, I simply ask that they credit the visual content to my channel along with a link to the original video, a situation that works to everyone's advantage. CZcams is in a difficult place at the moment, their biggest channels are bigger than some TV stations, whilst they also host personal short videos taken on a mobile phone that are only ever intend to be seen by a few friends. I believe CZcams will become a TV station in its own right creaming off the top creators. Maybe that is the right direction so long as they continue to provide a platform for budding film makers, some of whom will be tomorrows stars. It must also be remembered that without CZcams, my channel would not exist. Cheers. Tim.

    • @neilforbes416
      @neilforbes416 Před 4 lety

      @@Timsvideochannel1 Tim, it's the "budding" film(video) makers like you and I, and an ever-growing army of others that are the backbone of CZcams. Like you, I don't make my videos to earn any money. This is purely a hobby for me. And I enjoy it! My only bugbear is getting the video uploaded with this Australian National Broadband(read: Fraudband) Network and it's Fibre-To-Node instead of what the Australian Labor Party wanted to build, Fibre-To-Premises roll-out. New Zealand has the Fibre-To-Premises and their broadband network is world-class while Australia's "horse-and-cart" system is an utter joke. My latest is the trim-down version of my latest video where I concentrate on my 4th Sydney Tramway Museum visit, a separate video on my Dulwych Hill-to-Central Station tram ride will follow soon. The STM visit took over 4 hours to upload and it's only 1.4GB and 54 Minutes, 29 Seconds in duration. This plus I had to abort/restart twice. Then I had to contend with this new upload method CZcams is trying to foist on us. When we ask for the regular method, up pops a questionaire asking us why we don't want to use the new method. And after 2 abort/restarts you get the same questionaire. CZcams DOES NOT LISTEN! As to "providing a platform for budding film makers", without us "budding film makers", CZcams would not exist!

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 4 lety

      @@neilforbes416 Hi Neil, I just took a look at your tramway video, looks good. CZcams needs creators, just as creators need CZcams. Sorry to hear of your broadband woes, I've got used to unlimited fast fibre optic broadband at a reasonable price, its not until I travel I realize how good it is. @@Timsvideochannel1 There's an old saying that goes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I wish CZcams would learn that! Your fibre-optic broadband system would be a million miles ahead of the load of crap shoved down our Aussie throats by this treasonous federal government. Even New Zealanders get super-fast Fibre-To-Premises broadband. You'll have noticed that during your visit there, as would HubNut, who is there now and uploading video via laptop of his "road test" videos where he test-drives cars. He'd no sooner click "okay" to start the upload, than it would be up and ready for view. My video took an excruciating 4 hours to upload, plus having to abort/restart twice.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 4 lety

      @@neilforbes416 CZcams should keep the old format, it was far better than the new one, that seems to just ram CZcams's own videos down your throat about improving this and that with absolutely no regard for the fact that most creators aren't doing it for the money. I don't want to be told in big writing that the last video isn't doing well, I didn't make it to do well, I know some subjects don't attract as many views as others, but it doesn't mean its not fun to do. CZcams needs to refocus on the reasons it exists. I have been watching HubNut's stuff, I like his view on things, not too serious. The Broadband is just something you are stuck with until someone puts more money into the network. Here in the UK small villages and places in the countryside are getting a poor deal from broadband, but in the cities and towns, its pretty good.
