The sound they produced as a 3 piece band is exceptional especially with the lyrics thrown into the mix, paul weller for me is up there with the greatest musicians who ever lived!
Thanks again for featuring The Jam. This is in my top 3 of their songs - it has a lively feel and as well as the guitar and bass work, credit should go to the often underrated Rick Buckler on drums too. It's also very clever lyrically too, as you'd expect - like the line "....but you find out life isn't like that, it's so hard to understand why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam!"
Another great Jam tune! Another philosophical message… love the line ‘life is a drink and you get drunk when you’re young’ … I’m British and I can’t make out a lot of what Paul Weller is saying aswell 😂 he barks with such fury at times… he was a proper angry young man in these days!
All mod cons & setting sons, for me, were their finest hour. Saw them live twice during those two album tours when I too was an angry young man. Still love their music today now I'm an angry old man!
Tears of rage run down your face, but still you say its fun!! Weller at his best !! This song meant so 4:40 much to me in 79 as a 18 year old Working class fella !
This was released as a stand alone single it was never on any original album. Its a Bruce Foxton composition sung by him as the main vocalist. This version is superb from The Bingley Hall "live" video .
Great song from 1979, the official video is well worth watching it's a real slice of late 70's Britain. Paul Weller was just 21 when it was released. The bandstand they are playing in, during the video was just a few years later blown up the IRA.
Oh yea the sound of my youth, this was London '79 backed with Smithers-Jones, another brilliant piece, during the winter of discontent, power cuts during one of the coldest winters for years, this was our music, we had a sound for us,our stories being told.
Kia ora hello my friends man you guys have been busy.i love the jam the opening for THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT is one of those songs that put a Lump in my throat every time I don't know what it's triggering but something special from my past

my most favourite band of all time...I love the way chris looks so serious while listening and let's a little head movement to the music slip now and again and Cynthia just get totally immersed in it swaying her head about..like she's properly into it...tin soldier by the small faces is an awesome tune if you could have a listen at some point....enjoying your channel....
The outro resolves this song nicely as adulthood breaks out and your working day ends: Allover the country, the lights are going out. In millions of homes, and thousands of flats ( apartments in us speak) going out, going out going out.
1979/80 were their best two years when they peaked. After that it was never the same. The only top quality songs after that were Malice and a couple off The Gift album.
@@pursey2 They were mostly all good songs in 81 and 82 but weren’t anywhere near the standard of Setting Sons and Sound Affects. Also their live shows weren’t as charged in 82.
So for anyone who doesn't understand sociology - something that encapsulates a time and social setting and evokes specific meaning to anyone who was 'young' when the song was released... but sounds 'fun' to anyone of a different time an dplace
I just watched a sort of discography on The Jam, and what I took mostly from it was the "all or nothing" mindset of the period. It's been said that "punk" was an attitude; that (1) anyone could pick up an instrument regardless of training, and (2) the bloated music industry had to be harpooned. As a kid I was completely on board with those ideals, (probably even more pertinent today) but wasn't quite ready to burn my Who, Kinks, Beatles records. One of the funny things from the time was when "London Calling" came out many of the punks were crying "sell-out", and today some of them are on the "nostalgia tours". So it goes. By the way I'm loving your Jam rabbit hole.
This album is a story. You heard Eton rifles. The end is little boy soldiers, he gets killed, the last line...Find enclosed one son , one medal, and a note to say he won.

I've waited for the right time all of my 64 years, & still listening to The Jam. We will not see their like again.
No band before or since has sung about teenage life in this period with the passion of The Jam. This was their golden era, stone cold classic.
I've said it before, but it bears repeating, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler were one of the best rhythm sections ever.
Almost as good as Jim Lea and Don Powell 🥳
@@alanwhitney3263 thats a tough call!
Hell, Foxton pretty much was playing lead bass in many of their songs, and Rick Buckler is a great drummer.
Saw them live 20 plus times. You’ve no idea how good they were live!
The sound they produced as a 3 piece band is exceptional especially with the lyrics thrown into the mix, paul weller for me is up there with the greatest musicians who ever lived!
Along with The Clash, most important UK band since The Beatles

Possibly my favourite Jam 45 (single),especially as I was 17 at the time and this really spoke to me and "my generation".
This entire album, and Sound Affects are just amazing front to back.
My personal holy trinity is All Mod Cons, Setting Sons and Sound Affects.
"The world is your oyster, but your futures a clam" pure genius from weller
This song summed up my teenage years. " They let you think you're King, but you're really a Pawn. " A minor player on the chessboard of life.
All mod cons & setting sons, for me, were their finest hour. Saw them live twice during those two album tours when I too was an angry young man. Still love their music today now I'm an angry old man!
I'm just so lucky to have been a teenager listening to all this music.

Paul Weller was and still is a genius! You can't go wrong with The Jam.
The world is your oyster, but your future's a clam. Great lyrics from Weller
The Jam their bass sound is special i love it
Fabulous single!!! Lyric videos with The Jam worth a watch.👍
I certainly think that lyric video versions are required for many Jam songs!
Love what Vic Coppersmith did with the Woking wonders. His contribution has been significantly underestimated and overlooked.
We didn't know who that was so we looked it up. Always good to acknowledge the producer.
“Life is a drink and you get drunk, when you’re young.” Correct if my memory is anything to go by.
Russ Hastings and Bruce these days take me back.
‘Life is timeless days are long when you’re young’ 🎵
Great choice. As mentioned in a previous comment, Strange town is one of their best from this period.

Lyrics
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
Life is timeless, days are long when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Any guitar and any bass drum
Life is a drink and you get drunk when you're young
Life is new and there's things to be done
You can't wait to be grown up
Acceptance into the capital world
You pull on some weed, then you pull on someone when you're young
But you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to comprehend
Why you set up your dreams to have them smashed in the end
But you don't mind you've got time on your side
And they're never gonna make you stand in line
You're just waiting for the right time
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
You're fearless and brave, you can't be stopped when you're young
You swear you're never-ever gonna work for someone
No corporations for the new-age sons
Tears of rage roll down your face
But still you say it's fun
And you find out life isn't like that
It's so hard to understand
Why the world is your oyster but your future's a clam
It's got you in its grip before you're born
It's done with the use of a dice and a board
They let you think you're king but you're really a pawn
Whoa-oh, whoa-oa
Whoa-oh
You're fearless and brave, you can't be stopped when you're young
You used to fall in love with everyone
Any guitar and any bass drum

Whoa-oh, whoa-oh (going home, going home)
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh (going home, going home)

Tears of rage roll down your face
And still you say it's fun...

'Life it's your oyster, but your future is a clam'
Modern poetry, as true today as it was then

Paul Weller only 20 writing these songs so far ahead of his time.
It was not on Setting Sons. Weller used to , in the main, release singles not on albums.

They were always introduced by Paul's father John as, "The best band in the fucking world!". Still true to this day

Great channel, but you really should pull up the lyrics to these Jam classics. Weller really was the greatest songwriter of the UK punk generation.
My growing up band in the UK. Politics were abound.
watch the official video, its defiantly worth a watch, also may I recommend "Absolute beginners" by the jam
