    That's a "Whammy" or vibrato bar at the bottom. You can bend the note up or down, create vibrating or dive bombing effects. Prince used a lot of pedals made by Boss. He actually used a Boss Flanger pedal on a lot of his drum machine tracks....you can hear it on the hi hat cymbal on the intro to "She's Always In My Hair"...kinda psychadelic. Prince was that dude.

    Those are guitar pedals. They are used to give different effects to the guitar sound. Wah, distortion and flanger are pretty common pedals that are used. There are others too.

    Those are guitar pedals. Miles Davis also used them for his trumpet in the 70s
