**sees video** yooo nobody told me that Sydney had an entire monorail!
**sees description** oh...
I was a little boy in 2013, and I still remember the time I rode the monorail in its last days. I was not living in Australia at that time, but the experience of riding a “coming to an end” transport way was cool and memorable.
yeah but so HOT inside cause of no air con during summer. IT was horrible.
I was also a little boy in 2013 but my parents never took me to ride it there.
I was a young boy but never got the chance to ride the monorail. Now i kinda wish i did. I remember waiting for my aunt with my parents at one end of piermont (I honestly cant remember how to spell that haha) bridge because she came by monorail
I still have my HO scale model of the Sydney mono rail. I bought it from your museum back in 1995. Works perfect and must be so rare now as I never see any others.
It's a shame that they removed this instead of expanding to more areas and a second line, instead they replace it with a bus line to clog the roads more
ram64man what happened to the ROW
Hey Man Shut the fuck up.
Hey Man your username really works in this context.
Bruno Kunda True but he's spamming it randomly
It’s a crime!
I have vague memories of 5-year old me riding this in 2000, watching the buildings blur by as I dozed off to sleep by my parents.
Deadset same bro
I’m a little older but still have very vague memories of riding it once or twice. In 2000 I would have been 13. I remember being in Sydney and realising I hadn’t seen or heard the monorail only to be told it had stopped permanently. Very sad.
Nice memory.
Man... Living in the center of sydney having had to walk to work, I always enjoyed looking up at the Monorail lines and seeing one casually roll past, Even more so being in one, The views were amazing, You got a point of view you don't get in any traditional forms of Transportation, It truly was my favourite thing to do on a weekend, Buy the $2.50 Sunday Ticket and ride the Monorail for 3 Hours, Taking in the sights.
BS lol your joking right, The views were amazing sure, but OMG how hot was it inside them, they had no air con during summer. It was bad when people crammed inside them.
I remember when I was really young and going on this. I literally still remember the fear of the train just falling off the rail. Sad to see it go.
Why is it going? What happened to it?
@@saminyasarridom1813 You're late to the party. It was demolished a long time ago now.

Nothing's better than a genuine, bonafide, electrified, six car monorail!
But a bus and tram is better than a so called genuine bonafide electrified six car monorail to the NSW transport minister back in 2013
I miss the Sydney Monorail! A truly great piece of machinery! Oh, and at the start, I always wondered how that giant metal platform full of Monorails worked...and now I know!
Thank you drivers that filmed this
Sadly, it's gone now , i use to ride on it a lot in late 80s when it was just new and the full loop cost 2 dollars then .
I have fond memories of visiting Sydney and going around by monorail. Thanks for uploading this video, it's great to see it from the driver's perspective!
And yet in 2018 Seattle's Monorail with it's grand total of 2 whole stations is still running. :P
Right, but one of the stations isn’t the original anymore (at the south end, it was moved up a block or so to accommodate the building it currently stops next to.)
@@joermnyc and there are weird platform bridges that extend to the other track, since the platforms are only on one side
@massimo garcia and the rails are closer together at Westlake as well, which led to an accident.
@@joermnyc door got sheared off, if i remember
Sad to see the demise of Monorail in sydney. Why is that we are going backwards?
aussienik its actually very ineeficient
Its up there with closing all the nightclubs after a certain hour... not many arguments left to visit
C. Lincoln LOL you should visit a Canadian city, Sydney will seem like paradise in comparison.
White Wolf Why? Care to elaborate? Seems the reverse to me.
C. Lincoln do your Canadian cities not have any of your list of criminals?, they sure do,name a city on earth that does not. Look at yourself in the mirror, if you can stand it.
I remember going on this monorail as a kid, And I miss this line. It was great while it lasted.
It was horrible on a hot day, there was no air con to cool you down, it was like an oven when it was 30C
This seems to futuristic to me. I see in the comments this has been removed. Shame :(
True. Way better than overpriced light rail
It was written in the video, heh(
No. This system was ineffective and not many people used it. It's good, now Sydney can focus on improving the light rail which is better than the monorail.
These one direction loops are unfortunately not very efficient. Many people will opt not to use it because the stop they want to go to is more than halfway around the loop, sometimes almost all the way back to where they departed. It's quicker to walk in that case and that discourages people from using the system.
Detroit in the US has a similar elevated train downtown that does a single loop in one direction and it has the same problem with ridership. I'm surprised it's still in operation.
@@kevindejesus8119 light rail is way more efficient and has less impact on the view.
Looks like there's almost only one way traffic in Sydney...
Willem Bruins That can be good for traffic but also be confusing
There are a lot of one ways in the city... even in residential areas. It's really frustrating when you're catching an uber and it feels like the driver is taking detours.
The public transport is fantastic in Aus cities though.
its all one way streets. getting to a spot you can see across the street will take you a long time to get to
@@69mrnikolai Well, crossing the street is what walking was invented for...
@@ixlnxs not if you have a work car full of engineering equipment and need to make it into a specific loading bay for a building.

Whilst backpacking Australia in 1997 and staying at a hostel in the city centre, I had the opportunity to ride the complete circuit of this monorail, boarding and alighting at the same station. It was fun. Pity, it's now gone, due to its loathing of it by the locals.
Sadly a great idea that was done cheap at the start. Needed to go to Circular Quay to really connect the city. In its latter life it was starting to become unreliable and was showing signs of neglect.
I first saw the Sydney monorails when I was a little kid, loved them, thought they were the coolest thing ever, when I heard they were taking them down, it was a very sad day for me after that let me tell you, haven’t been to Sydney since
This is an incredibly compact system damn
シドニーに行ったことがないので街並みが見れてよかった♪
Back in early 2013 I couldn't even afford to go on the monorail trip as the tickets were on insane prices just before it was taken down. I wish I could've gone on the monorail back in the late 80's where it really mattered and it was like $2 a trip and not $20 to $25 in mid 2013! Belongs in the 80's.

So glad I took a ride not long before it closed down. I had only ridden it about two or three times prior since it's opening in 1988.
Loved this video, I didn’t even know Sydney had a monorail.
I remember riding this back in 2006 for my first time ever!
The stations were empty :(
Weekdays yes, but on Sundays it's packed with elderlys and screaming children.
Would be nice to see this in regular speed. Great video, thanks for the share!
I love it. I want to see this at least once!
Great stuff...thanks very much for this.
I first visited Sydney in 2007 and stayed at a hotel on Pitt St. I did take the monorail to Darling Harbour and thought it was cool thing to do. Returning next week to Sydney for the World Cup and I'm a big fan of the new light rail lines (which i rode on my last trip down under)
I had no idea. Australia is gorgeous!
I loved the monorail when visiting Sydney 😢
Wow its so much integrated to the buildings of the city
CZcams recommending this video 8 years after its post
The Sydney monorail was soo awesome👌👌I miss it a lot
besides having no air con during hot days, it was fine. They should have made it go everywhere instead of the same route all the time.
Superb ride lots of love from India❤❤
people at that time must not have expected what a nightmare it could be of building the new light rails
Cool video! Thanks for sharing!
All the 123 people who rode on this over the years will miss it.
More like 123,000,000 since debut
@@marcozolo3536 Most of them were tourists. Regular Sydneysiders never used it because it was too expensive, uncomfortable, frequently broke down and didn't go where anyone wanted to go.
Rode this when we were in Sydney. Thought it was great. Saddened to learn of it's demise.
This used to be one of the coolest things to do in Sydney as a kid. Thanks Clover, thanks Gladys. :/
It was useless though. Only went one direction, crowded, hot and no intercarriage movement.
@@Matthew_M11 yep, no air con.
It was interesting to ride in, particularly if you just wanted to go in a large circle.
It was a series of poorly planned ugly posts with a lengthy piece of metal on the top, looking at it from the ground.
Instead of watching the city, my eyes were on the tracks.
Mate, I miss the good old days when I was a kid living in Sydney.
I dont know why but this is very satisfying
Had not relized there be one this big 😯 nice ride
I didn't even know that Sydney has a monorail, they're my favorite form of transportation! I'll have to ride it if I ever go!
It has been demolished though.. sadly!
@@mariusmika WHAT, awwwww well at least Seattle STILL has one
@@mamaken7689 Well, these kinds of monorails are still popular at larger amusement parks around the world. For example, Sea World Australia has one (type “Von Roll Mk-2”, very similar to the one that Sydney had). Also, Europa-Park in Germany has one (same type). So, if you happen to visit one of these locations, you can still ride such a monorail today.
Great video of the entire loop - not sure why it existed in the first place, since everything was very close together already, but what a nice sightseeing tour of the Darling Harbour district. Why on earth it didn't at least connect to Circular Quay in some way is beyond me. Either way, I only first visited Sydney in 2023 and was sad to see this was no longer in existence.
I think TriMet has got to get a monorail in Portland because holy cow that does look cool
I work in the city so I really miss the sight of the Monorail.
My wife used to live in Sidney and remembers this. What an absolute shame they got rid of it.
Kind of got stuck on board.. jumped on board in the middle of the day and we were sitting in the sun. Then they closed the doors... sat there for 15 minutes no fresh air at all and getting cooked. Liked the trip but very happy to get off and cool down.
Loved my entire life in Sydney and had no clue at all that this existed
Did this pop up in anyone else’s recommendation after seven years?
Lol yes idk why

I continually regret the passing of the monorail, a wonderful feature of the city
that I made a point of using on every visit.
Jack Palmer ...for $8 a ride? I lived 3 years in Sydney and thought I couldn’t afford it.
Adrien Ragot Was it covered by the Opal daily/Sunday fare cap?
@@changliu2422 Opal didn't exist back then.
I love this kinds of tram!
This monorail was fabulous and it went around the central Sydney CBD brilliantly - there were also plenty of people using it the times I rode on it (from 9am to 8pm). However the biggest mistake was the route did no go to the central bus hub OR the central railway station - either of those would have allowed easy interconnection. BUT lacking that interconnection and relatively high prices is probably what doomed it. Real pity though as it was great.
Looks like a special adventure

Amazingly some of the stations still exist in an untouched state. Harbour side and city centre are two of them.

A lot of fun if you could actually get onto it! Super popular with tourists so it was often horrendously busy. Was on it one day it stopped between stations & seemed to lose all power including air conditioning - got very hot very quickly, luckily it only stopped for a few minutes. After that experience I never rode it again and relied on the trains and ferries.
Just showed this to my son as my wife and I rode it all the time and to work in mornings from Ultimo and he’s like that’s awesome why on earth did they get rid of it. I have no reasonable answer as I loved it

Had to check the date, we were in Sydney the winter after it was closed... the rail on that bridge over Darling Harbor was already gone.
The city where i live in (Bandung) should build this, perfect with narrow roads and small sidewalk
