    My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
    My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
    It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
    When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
    We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
    I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
    These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
    We film and edit everything ourselves.
    I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

    Just in case you missed my comment last time: Lisa at the Chateau de Montmagner found out while restoring her own windows that changing the glass panes for thicker and therefore more energy efficient ones, didn't cost her that much and was easy to do since she had to change the putty anyway.

    • @ICUinthedark
      @ICUinthedark Před 4 lety +6

      In theory a thicker pane glass sounds energy-efficient, yet it is not. To be truly efficient one needs double pane glass inserts with E-Gas inside...very expensive to make, plus the thickness in the end makes it difficult to install, have to end up modifying the windows.

Both you and Stephanie have such presence on 'the screen' very good acting in fact. The script was delightful. You should also think about having Michael Potts to write a play and you and Stephanie and others could act it out. I really like the old time mysteries and miss them on TV. Love seeing the cottage work. I will have to try out the new putty product on some repair things I need to attend to around here. Have a great weekend. • @tpike9482
    @tpike9482 Před 4 lety +6

    Michael.....when you have to sand inside or even when you're cleaning the inside of the cottage, take a least 1 box/floor fan & place it in the doorway or an open window. It will draw out most of the dust that is stirred up & keep things a bit cleaner. Also, if you don't have the right size of sander or a sanding block/sponge, take 2 pieces of scrap wood 2.54 cm x 5.08 cm x 20.32 cm & wrap a piece of sand paper around 1 piece with the ends meeting in the middle of one side. Take the other piece & lay it on top of the wrapped piece & nail/staple it down to the sandpaper-wrapped piece. Now use the smaller flat surface & the corners of the covered piece to sand tight areas & corners, etc. Also, there is a natural safe paint-removing gel in the US that you can apply to wood surfaces & then cover with kitchen plastic wrap & leave overnight. It causes all the old paint to bubble up & separate from the wood so that you can just scrape it off & have very little to sand. It saves a lot of time & work. And there is a resin that you can apply to rotted & internally-damaged wood to preserve it. It soaks into the rotted/damaged wood & hardens it so that you can apply any needed wood filler, sand the wood & paint it. This can save you from having to remove or replace any wood. I enjoy watching it rain at the chateau, as well as the sound of it. Very neat additional story line with the mystery.

    I adore you and your channel. With love, I believe you need to have two channels. One for “Doing it Ourselves” which is all about diy, construction, etc. Another for your amazingly beautiful travels, your ability to capture beauty with music. Oh then, a cooking channel? And an acting one with your amazingly cast of characters? You have so many talents, it’s hard to rein it in on one channel. I’d subscribe to them all. Be well. ❤️

    My Dad would take scrape blocks of wood to size he needed for the area, add the sandpaper to the block, it made it easier to sand in those small areas. Good job!

    I do hope the cat has a reputable solicitor to represent him and to keep him out of the clink! He is just to adorable to be found guilty of anything other than leaving behind an occasional fur ball.

    Have you thought of getting a dremel? Great for working on fine or small things. I used it alot making prototype and models years ago. They are cheap and make this type work much easier.

      Great idea and they come with tons of different ends, so they're super versatile. They're small enough to get into the tiniest engravings and routed wood designs, too. You might want to practice on scrapwood first, though, because if it runs off on you, you can damage your piece. I've used them for years customizing model horses, carving wood, and just about every project that has tight spaces.
