  • Today is all about leggy tomato seedlings and what always works to fix them. You don't have to start over if your tomato seedlings are thin and spindly. How can you recognize a stretched seedling? How can you prevent them? And most importantly, how can you save your tomato plants? In this video, I show you how to fix leggy tomato seedlings and show the results you can expect afterwards 🌱

    Did you know that in the US it's estimated that 86% of home gardeners grow tomatoes? That's a lot of tomatoes being grown each year, and I want to help you get it right! Because tomato seedlings can be quite needy when it comes to light and nutrients, it's not uncommon for them to get leggy. The good news is that leggy tomatoes are easy and fast to fix. So let's get them back on track, and we'll all have a summer full of tomatoes ahead!

    I was so excited years ago, when I had all these seedlings growing indoors. They were getting so tall and I thought that they were doing what they were supposed to. Until it became very apparent they were not ok. lol Your leggy seedlings advice was great and definitely works! 🙂

    What kind of soil for leggy plants is best

  • @kmisercola7180
    @kmisercola7180 Před rokem +3

    My problem is my tomato plants usually get to leggy. Not the seedlings everyone talks about but my plants in my greenhouse before I plant them. How do you grow tomato plants so they are about 12-14" tall and nice and thick stemmed, like the Bonney brand tomatoes you buy in stores? I'm gonna try topping some plants this season to see if it corrects my "leggy" problems. What are your suggestions?

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  Před rokem +2

      How early are you starting your tomatoes? I recommend no more than 10 weeks before they go outside. If you start them too early, you'll get plants that are too big and lanky and can even start flowering before they're transplanted in the garden. I pot up my tomato plants each time their growth slows in their current container, and each time I pot up I rebury the stem up to the leaves. I pinch back new growth on the stem which helps the plant focus on growing strong foliage and stem instead of getting tall and unruly. I hope this helps.

      @@NowGardening I use plug trays for all of my seeds and usually plant tomatoes the first of April which should be perfect for northern NY. I transplant all of my plants deep especially when planted in the gardens.

    We can trans-plant leggy seedings (without true leaves yet) ? They still only have the first 2 tiny leaves nothing else yet. I'm new this time around and some of my tomato seedlings appear to be leggy. Would prefer to try and salvage them without dying /trashing

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  Před rokem +1

      Hi Sarah. Without seeing how leggy and weak your seedlings are, it’s hard to answer this. Yes, I have used this technique many times on tomato seedlings without their first true leaves. Another alternative is to get them under a grow light 14-18 hrs a day to strengthen them. With this, they’ll stay stretched out but their stem will get thicker and stronger. Then you can pot them up. If you check out an old video I did “2 methods of fixing leggy seedlings” you’ll see this. It was one of my first videos, so it’s not great viewing quality but the method works. Hope this helps you decide which is best for your tomato seedlings!

    I use 20 ounce raisin boxes for fixing leggy plants and 42 ounce oats containers for larger transplants.

    Hii
    My seedlings are more thinner and taller then urs
    Shoud i put them in direct sunlight or cover them with plastic sheet
    Since temperatures here are v harsh around 40° Celsius

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  Před rokem

      It sounds like they might need more sunlight if they’re leggy. One option if they’re still seedlings is to get a growlight which will give them extra light without the harsh heat and sun in your climate. A lot of people in hot climates also use sun cloths to keep the sun from scorching their tomato plants. Another strategy is to start them earlier next year, so that the plants will have tomatoes by the time it hits the 40° as tomatoes (the actual fruit) love the heat. I hope this helps!

    this makes me question wether having a leggy tomato plant is a good thing cause you can bury it deeper and give it more access to more nutrients

      I wish youtube gave us a way to share photos so I could see what they looked like before and after. Personally, I've rarely have tomato seedlings die while they're still inside and protected. Over- or underwatering or overfertlizing are the easiest ways to kill tomato plants when they're inside. Could any of these have been the issue?
      Again, I'm sorry yours didn't work out.@@Jaif23
