Terror Street Pt27 - Martian Fighting Machines

- Martian Fighting Machines (2 of them) invade Terror St Victorian model railway layout.
I made the first one on 2 hours, the second one in 45 minutes.
I found some wind-up torches in the shape of bugs that are ideal, and they only cost £2. They have LEDs but the wind-up mechanisms do not function. I got these from Poundstretcher. Then I used bendy straws for the legs, and cocktail sticks for the support. Other spare gears and bits can be used for the feet and other details. Spray it using silver, red primer and black, and there it is done.
These I will add onto the layout only at certain times to make it more fantastical. I may also add a balloon from Around the World in 80 days, and perhaps Nautilus submarine from 20,000 leagues Under the Sea.
Music is The Artilleryman and the Fighting Machine from The New Generation of War of the Worlds.

Excellent addition to the set & layout, interesting to see it develop thematically, incorporating multiple tales, maybe you can do up a Victorian wharf section, loading crane, ramps, maybe as overlay, a berth for the Nautilis sub...General Rid Stump!!!
Excellent idea. The only problem is finance as the club has stopped financing the build any further, and in fact I had to pay the last bit of cash to complete to the standard I wanted. So all of that might cost me a bit. I still might add Nautilus but it would be a small area if I do. Thanks for the idea.

I was trying to figure out what to use for the body, as I knew I wanted straws for the hinged legs. Then these torches cropped up in the shop, and I thought these will do nicely. Cheap too.

I agree, instantly as soon as you atched the legs i knew what it was . lol a fleet would be great! ( mabey an alternate reason for why the pug fell of of the viaduct, the viaduct could of been shot by one of the death rays and caused the pug to de-rail?). Alex

One of mine too Dan. This is actually a re-mix with the voice over by Liam Neeson instead of Richard Burton. Inexpensive to buy and it is true to the original. Recommended. I have the original on LP.
Also there is a dub-mix version. Search on here. It is called Ulladubulla or something like that lol. Pretty interesting.
Calvertfilm sounds cool! Yeah I was trying to figure it out re: who was narrating as it wasn't the original (I managed to pick up the double CD of the original some time ago and put it straight onto my phone). Liam Neeson narrated the live theatre version didn't he?
I'm not sure about the theatre version. It is on YT though, so I'll have to check it out.

Well these are optional placements Dave. Most of the time it will look like normal Victoriana but then every hour or so the Martians will invade. I have a couple more small things planned but I think the Tripods are the most interesting. Really TS is 'finished'. You know what it's like lol. Cheers, Laurie.

Yeah eyes could have been green. They actually have a bulbs in them, so I have the option of lighting them up one day.

If these were going to be in a permanent position on the layout I would have run wires inside one of the legs and wired them up - would be easy to do.

also there is a detail you missed on the feet. if you look at the animations for the war of the worlds the musical the tripods almost have these y shaped feet. just look on youtube. But this still looked amazing.

Lol, well Neon came in, so I thought I'd show him my work. He of course thought it was a toy for him, and had the feet off. So I wore him out instead with the laser-pointer pen. After that the Martian Fighting Machine stood over him, and he lay there asleep not caring a jot lol. Both machines (I made a second one in 45 mins) now reside at the club, so Neon can't get them there.
Someday when I an adult I will build a giant model of the 2005 tripods from that movie and it will move, and walk and have all of the sounds, and tentacles and it will not harvest people, but make it look like it, and it will be a carnival ride, called tripods the real life experience, and that cat is like what is this human a toy, and that poor green saddle tank engine he would have been blown to bits, we all know which one of Thomas’s friends that is, little all Percy

How can a whole entire wind up torch toy be held up by some flimsy little straws?!
There are cocktail sticks attached to the straws into the torch body, and that makes it work well. Very strong.

However I truly think you did an amazing job of building that Martian. So you get a thumbs up from me. Though couldn't quite make out what you placed beside your model at the end. Looked like a War of the Worlds audio CD album to me!?
Yeah it was a bit quick. It was the CD musical version as that was the style of Tripod I made. Cheers.

I want to make this but have none of the parts and the only ones I know where to get are the straws 😩
It took me a while to find something to make the body. I got it from a cheap Pound Shop type of place but it doesn't mean all branches will have it. You might be able to find the torch online?
