  • Breaking a World Record is the highest possible achievement in athletics. Not only is a world record an incredible moment for sports, but it showcases an individual's dominance over all of their competitors.
    Of all the great distance runners throughout history, Haile Gebrselassie from Ethiopia just might be the most revoluationary of them all as he set an unprecedented 27 world records in his career. From the 2,000 meters up to the marathon distance, Gebrselassie was constantly improving on record times. From 1992 to 2009, a full 17 years, Haile was constantly breaking World Records, which is a feat that few athletes have ever been close to matching.
    In this video, we'll be detailing Gebrselassie's World Record performances and how he became one of the most esteemed athletes in running history.
    Thanks for watching!

    Bekele may be the GOAT, and I do love him, but the difference between him and his mentor and previous GOAT, is the smile that was always on Haile's face.
    That's what made him so lovable.

    I met Haile in a national x country race of 12km in january 1988 in Assela city..his home town.we represented our respective regions. He was way way younger than me..probably the youngest of all. I remember how he galloped past me as the race unfolded with consumate ease. I sensed running must be inborn... seeing this kid running so fast with stride that matches older runners.He was placed 7th competing with the very best that came from Addis. During the dinner ceremony after the race where we were shown a video of the late Miruts Yifter's 5000 meter final win in the Moscow 1980 olympics. Miruts Yifter himself was with us on the dinner session, also watching the video and everybody was clapping for him as the video showed eventually Miruts bursting in speed past the tanzanian runner and the finn carlo maninca in the last lap with 300 meters to go.Miruts was smiling meanwhile. Haile's friends during dinner session cheered him a lot saying this is our hope, Assela town's future hope, and during that same dinner ceremony they were loughing constantly at him and mocking him for picking kocho, a loal staple food instead of the more stylish meat. He was mocking them back saying you all are ignorant about the value of kocho.

      Bekele was also a complete beast and pretty much untouchable in Cross Country. Not trying to take anything away from the King, but he won two medals (bronze and a silver as a junior) at World XC, arguably the most competitive distance race on the planet, while Bekele won 11 gold and 1 silver. He was undefeated over both the short course and long course for 5 consecutive years (2002 - 2006). No runner can match that kind of resume.

      I am Ethiopian and I am always inspired by Haile. But, Kenenisa Bekele is the greatest long distance runner I have ever seen. To this day, I truly believe that he respected Hisham Elgarouj unnecessarily and waited till the last lap giving advantage to a short distance great like the Moroccan in the 5000m Athens olympics. If he started in the final 4 laps, he was winning that race. He is the man! Unbelievable for Haile and Kenenisa to dominate for over 20 years one after the other!

      He has an unbelievable 5000 m and 10000 m time that I believe are supreme times that are not going to be touched for a long time to come. However then he had only one solid marathon and had nearly nothing else in the marathon and had even not completed many marathons in his career.
      So then I held Kipchoge as the GOAT long distance runner, but after his 2:01.41 I have no doubts anymore- He's the GOAT in long distance no doubt.

      Yes me too. I watched it live while i was in my sweet home country. What a memory it was!
      I am a very big fan of Kenenisa too; even though he has bet records, he was not as consistent as Halile the Great; he was beaten several times by Mo Farah, Kipchoge and others.
      Let's hope this COVID-19 will leave soon and watch Kenenisa vs Kipchoge; I feel like this is the last chance for Kenenisa to beat Kipchoge; if he can't know, he will give up :'( .

    And people want to call Eliud the goat 🙄 give me a break. Marathon goat yes, but as far as the greatest distance runner of all time? It's either Haile or Kenenisa, not even close.

      @kiswahilikitukuzwe2547 Před 4 lety

      Eliud Kipchoge is clearly the greatest marathoner of all time!
      Haile Gebrselassie is the greatest athlete, runner (or whatever you want to call it) of all time! *"Sorry Kenenisa Bekele, you come a distant second to both these two greats."* I am Kenyan by the way!

      Ajay Kumar disagree. Haile broke the marathon WORLD RECORD more times than kipchoge has. Kipchoge has no other world records to his name other than the one Marathon world record. Haile had 27.

      @bijohn333 Před 4 lety +2

      Kiswahili Kitukuzwe 254 agreed. Although, I don't believe kenenisa is a distant second. I think he's pretty close to them. If we rank both kipchoge and Haile at 10, kenenisa is a 9. Kenenisa also has plenty of world records to his name but can be slightly overshadowed by the accomplishments of these men

      Bekele is in every way greater than Haile. I don't mean to put one down, but there is literally no question as to who was the better runner among Bekele and Haile - Bekele has bettered all of Haile's times.

    • @alansamuel2454

      @@keinKlarname When I gave this comment I made a mistake I should have mentioned WR's.
      Bekele has a 3:32 1500, a 7:25.79 3000, a 8:13 2 mile, 27:49 10km never run a mile Haile has a 3:33 1500, a 3:52 mile, a 7:25.09 3000, a 8:01 2 mile, a 27:02 10km. So for the most of them you're right with the exception of the 1500m.
      But Bekele only ran a 2 miles once against Haile 3 times, Bekele never did a mile, and his 1:00.00 half is definitely possible to improve now to at least a sub 59 considering he missed the Marathon WR by 2 seconds!
      And this is not considering the events both of them focused on the 5000 m, and the 10000 m and the marathon all of which Bekele has significantly faster times.

    • @keinKlarname
      @keinKlarname Před 4 lety

      @@alansamuel2454 No, I was not wrong with the 1500m, Gebrselassie has set his PB indoors and is still the 4th fastest ever, 22 years after he has set this mark. Bekele did run the Mile and he has not significantly faster times in the 5000m and 10000m.

    Please do not discount the role played by the Genetics in these super-human performances. None of this would have been possible without blessed genes that give them East Africans lungs the size of a horse. Hence don't forget to mention it (at least once).
    Of course it doesn't mean that those stellar performances, incredible timings, numerous world records and that untouchable dominance - any of it could have been achieved without the model work ethics, the complete dedication towards one trade and commitment towards ones realising ones dreams, the mastery over ones craft.
