How We Grow These 4 Tomatoes & Why We Chose Them

- It's almost tomato season, so we're going to cover everything you need to know about getting these four kinds going and growing!
Right off the bat, let's cover some basics about starting them. Tomato seeds need warm soil, moisture, and some time. Give them those three, and you'll have seedlings in no time.
SAUCE TOMATOES
Romas are a favorite here, but there are tons of other varieties. We like them because they're prolific growers and taste great. Many sauce tomatoes are determinate, and that's because you get them all at once, so you need to use a lot at once.
They don't get as big as indeterminate varieties, but you do want to give them a strong structure to grow on that can support lots of fruit at once. Pruning, spacing, and bottom watering are also important with these.
CHERRY TOMATOES
Lots of these little guys are just downright delicious! As indeterminates with small fruits (so they're not super heavy), we like the lower and lean method. You can easily find suckers to prune, and you can keep coiling the bottom of the plant so the fruits are easy to reach.
SLICERS
Also lumped together beefsteak tomatoes, these big boys get huge and heavy so they need a strong support system. You can still use plant clips or ties to keep them aligned with your trellis but keep an eye on those tomatoes as they get bigger.
And to help them get nice and big, fertilizer and soil health is important. Before planting your tomatoes, it's a good idea to add compost and granular fertilizer to the growing area. You can also use a liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
DWARF TOMATOES
These are some of our new favorites! They're fantastic producers, and these pocket-sized varieties can be grown no matter what your gardening setup is. Pots and grow bags are a great option for dwarf varieties.

I categorize based on my own, very rigorous yumminess scale (1🤤- 10🤤). Currently Black Krim is winning. 😊
Yumminess Scale is definitely an official ranking system. Black Krim is great!
Mmmmmmm. Black Krim.
I read the darker the color the longer they set blossom and fruit in heat and humidity sooo.this sesaon its,Black krim, chocolate cherry and my fav. tazmanian choclate that I have grown and saved seeds for years. Had the best performance with 10 fingers of Naples in the Roma dept. last season so just growing those.
@@user-wj9ge4ct2l I give your post 10 🤤! Yummy!!!
i like the Black Krim ... but has terrible shelf life ..
Paste tomatoes are not just called that because they are determinate plants that fruit mostly at the same time. I believe it is mainly because they have a low moisture content and are a meatier tomato, which makes them ideal for cooking down to a sauce.
Yes, true. Had that in our notes but totally skipped it. That makes a HUGE difference. We've tried canning some others and it's not so great.
Roma Tomato is my favorite!!
A huge hit in our house!
Love the end 😂😂😂
Nice Pulp Fiction reference
You caught it!
Yeah, except the daddy tomato stomps the baby tomato before shouting ketchup! The Fox Force Five knew their pulp.
I love Amish Paste, giant roma-type with very thin skin, GREAT for canning, A-Mazing flavor. It's a weird tomato, heavier in the hand than you expect, and the skin is matte not shiny. Perhaps I got lucky in 9a northern california, because some say its growth is finicky. It is indeterminate but with a heavy early flush, so I plan to grow as a determinant this year. I also look forward to the tomatoes in my Garden With Us class package from San Diego Seeds.
Gonna have to give that one a try!
Anybody have ripe tomato right now? I have some in my yard, i cant believe its surviving the weather and the rain in san diego. Happy yardening!!!
San Diego has 265 growing days a year. (?)
What's the difference between Heirloom and Hybrid tomatoes? Slicers are generally a little smaller than the beef steak ( 10 to 14 oz. v. one pound or more)
Heirlooms are well established varieties, so you can save seeds and get the same tomato next year. Hybrids are crossbreeds that are less stable, so if you save seeds, your more likely to get one of the parent varieties than the hybrid you planted. Hybrids can be bred for flavor, color, disease-resistance, climate factors, etc., so they're great but usually you have to keep buying the seeds when you run out.
I categorize my tomatoes as alive or dead. The ones that live are delicious!
🤣
Will you have any cherry Brandywine seeds for this year? I’m in Ohio, not ready to start yet but coming in some weeks
We're working on that for sure! You can sign up to get an email when they're restocked.

Thanks I’m on the list…..I’ve been growing pink brandywines for about 10yrs. When I saw there was a cherry Brandywine I knew I had to buy some. Started following you guys since you seem to have sold some, if you’re out must mean you’re getting it right
One “like” for the joke!
Well, hey, at least we got one!
I thought that you shouldn't prune cherry tomatoes?
You definitely can. Pruning depends on the variety of the plant, how you're growing them, the health of the plant, and what you want to get from it.
Lol
“I may be getting that wrong…” suggestion: check out your facts before you give the presentation
Or leaving your house. All zee papers und facts must be in order!
