  • Thought I'd share the pros and cons of my UCL geography degree. I thoroughly enjoyed studying Geography and although it is not the most employable subject I would pick it again.

    People and governments are not seeing the potential of geography. Luckily in Argentina and Latin America it is beginning to be valued more, in my case I am oriented to flood risk management (physical geography), geomarketing and soon to agriculture (the main economic activity in Argentina is related to the Agriculture). We have a lot to give and not that we only stay in descriptive (school geography) or critical geography (David Harvey for example). Therefore it is up to us to spread this great discipline!
    Greetings colleague, I hope you can come to these sides to do a postgraduate!

      That's great to hear the growing appreciation for the subject in Latin America. I haven't heard the term geomarketing before- going to look into that more! Geographers definitely have a lot to give- we've just got to get a bit better at promoting the range of skills we have on offer and positively disrupting a number of sectors.
      Perhaps I will one day!

    • @AdamaLorna
      @AdamaLorna  Před 4 lety +6

      I believe its a strong subject but the fact that it doesn't link directly to a profession affects the employment prospects (although geographers are, on average, the most well paid of all the humanities). I think supplementing it with internships, society positions etc will really make for a strong entry into the world of work post university (got a video related to that coming out next week) as well as picking strong modules that develop in demand skills

      Unfortunately I don’t really know much about the Canadian geography courses 🙃. I had a look when I was considering a year abroad and there were a lot of similarities! Depends on where your interest are and where you want to live! 🌸

    This comment may be kind of late, but how much maths and science is involved in a geography degree? I enjoyed geography at A-level but I didn't study any of the science A-level. I wonder if I would find the degree a bit too intense..

    • @AdamaLorna
      @AdamaLorna  Před 3 lety +1

      Depends, you can decide if you want to do more physical or human modules. You can pick your modules according to how technical you want to go. Check out the modules in off at the universities you’re considering going to. Usually quite a bit of detail ☺️

    Which is better Bsc or Ba Geography?

    • @AdamaLorna
      @AdamaLorna  Před 3 lety +4

      Well “better” is relative to what you want to do after university and where your interest are. I personally would say Bsc but I’m speaking from personal preference- I feel like having a Bsc opens more doors though. I was able to environmental engineering at masters level and now work in tech- in part I feel like because of my Bsc and the modules I took 😊

      @@AdamaLorna what is environmental engineering about?
      Does it enable a person to design devices and instruments used by geologists or Geographers?
      I like the aspects of mapping, climate study etc.also population and others
      But can both be combined ?
      Bsc and Ba Geography be combined?
      Sorry for the lengthy reply

      And what engineering opportunities are there in Geography ?

    • @AdamaLorna
      @AdamaLorna  Před 3 lety

      I’d say research environmental engineering as the course varies a lot between institutions. Based on what you said you’re interested in then physical geography is definitely going to align better than human but in most universities you can combine both Bsc and BA Modules.

      Usually I'm already given a file of a region with elevation points, and I'm tasked to plot contour lines for a 2D map. Later next semester, I'll be doing 3D representations on a program called sketch-up. I plan to go into surveying/civil engineering in about a year from now, hopefully.
