Story: One day in the garden of the palace grounds
Princess Kitten Cat heard a most troubling sound.Two of the cook’s kittens, Claude and Camille
were having a fight over their picnic meal.“What’s going on?” Princess Kitten Cat cried.
“We’re sorry princess,” Camille humbly replied.
“We shouldn’t be fighting, we know it’s not nice
but we both wanted cake and there’s only one slice.” Kitten Cat was confused, she could not figure out
just what Claude and Camille where fighting about.
“There’s really no need to get so irate.
There’s cake in the kitchen, just go get a plate.” Claude felt embarrassed and tried to explain
that cake wasn’t easy for them to obtain.
“Kittens like us don’t get cake every day,
just when there’s a slice left on yesterday’s tray.
He looked awfully sad, like his joy had all gone.
His fur was all matted, his clothes were in rags
and he kept all his things is some old shopping bags.
but what she saw next was a startling display. High on the hill, such a sight to behold,
was a glimmering palace made out of pure gold.
There were jewels in the path leading up to the door.
It was quite unlike anything she’d seen before. “Who lives in that house? ” Princess kitten Cat axpayer. Yes, the mayor had lied, and now that they knew
there was simply no question of what they must do.
The king summoned his carriage and took the princess
to talk to the mayor at his home address. When they arrived at the golden chateau
the king was amazed by its shimmering glow.
They walked up the path and Princess Kitten Cat
knocked on the door with a rat-a-tat-tat.When the mayor’s butler opened the door
they could not believe all the riches they saw.
There was silver and gold and glittering baubles
and giant pink diamonds set into the corbels.The butler bowed deeply and ushered them in
and offered them sweets from a solid gold tin.
Then the mayor arrived dressed in opulent robes
and slippers with rubies set into the toes. “Hello,” said the king. “I’ve come to enquire
why you have been so overcome with desire
for trinkets and baubles and glittering rings
that you’ve cheated and lied and done dastardly things?
Did you not know that your longing for gold
has left so many cats feeling hungry and cold?” The mayor just cried and said he was alone
with no friends or family to cheer up his home.
“There’ll be no one to help me if things go awry
so I took the gold to make sure I’d get by.” The Princess could see that the mayor was sad
but deep in his heart he was not really bad,
but his living alone in a glittering palace
had left him quite lonely and bitter and callous. “There are cats in the village that do not have homes.
If they come and stay here then you won’t be alone.”
The King was impressed, “What a splendid idea!
All the cats without homes can come and live here!” So Tom cat moved in with all of his friends
while the mayor worked hard at making amends.
And once he’d returned all his ill gotten treasure
he suddenly found he had friends without measure. And just to make sure every cat got their share
the king thew a feast down in the town square.
And when the cook asked what treats she should make
Princess Kitten Cat smiled and said, “Let them eat cake!”
