Brief Political History of Virginia

This video recounts the history of Virginia. It begins with the first people that made Virginia their home, continues with European exploration including the Spanish and English. It then looks at how this became the first English colony in the Americas, how tobacco sustained it, and how it was central to the development of British America and then the Early Republic until the 1820s. It continues with its role in the Civil War and how it severely damaged its economic prospects. It then looks at the battle for civil rights and how Virginians were some of its pioneers and finishes with its development and transformation in the last few decades.

I was born in Maryland but have lived the majority of my life now in Virginia, and even as an avid history learner this video has taught me so many new things. We NEVER learned in history classes that the Spanish came to Virginia! Thank you for this video about my home state.

Thank you for the kind words. The Spanish in general are pretty much erased from American history (as are the French, although to a lesser extent), but the English at the time were very much aware.
