👑 Queen Letizia's extreme care for Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia of Spain.
Almost nine years have passed since King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicated the throne in a June 2014 ceremony in the Column Hall of the Royal Palace, becoming King Emeritus and bequeathing the Crown of Spain to his son, Felipe VI.
Throughout the ceremony, Letizia Ortiz, then Princess of Asturias, did not take her eyes off her daughters, Princess Leonor, heir to the Spanish throne, aged 8 at the time, and her younger sister, Infanta Sofia, aged 7 (today Leonor is 17, and Sofia, 15).
From knowing winks to scolding, Queen Leticia of Spain communicated with her daughters through her eyes. The two girls were visibly uncomfortable in that historic act, which took place in a visibly tense atmosphere, as you can see in the video (in addition to all the controversies involving King Juan Carlos I, from extramarital affairs to involvement with corruption, the monarch wanted to postpone the transfer of title to two weeks after that date, and the son, Felipe, prevented it).
At one point, Queen Letizia looked towards her daughters and, after making eye contact with the girls, subtly placed her palms together. The Queen of Spain's gesture was widely criticized at the time. That was an indication for Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia to keep their legs together while sitting. All of this under the relentless gaze of TV and photo cameras.
According to royal protocol, royal women must sit with their knees together. One can cross the ankles and tilt them slightly to the side or backwards. But never cross your legs (a rule that Queen Letizia, by the way, often breaks).
Since Felipe VI assumed the Spanish Crown, the monarch has been building a reign based on transparency and meritocracy. The plan is to implement a modern royalty, recovering the image of the institution, since the sisters of King Felipe VI, princesses Elena and Cristina, were involved in scandals, as well as their father.
Part of this image recovery is attributed to Queen Letizia, ironically a former republican. One of the most controversial episodes involving Letizia Ortiz took place in Mallorca, when Letizia tried to prevent her daughters, Leonor and Sofia, from taking a photo with their grandmother, thus linking the public image to the recent and controversial past of the Spanish monarchy.
