As for the statement that most people won't use the bed, we've had our Santa Cruz for 8 months and something has been in the bed everyday. It's so nice to have the comfort of an SUV, and a bed to put golf clubs, groceries, and plants into without worrying about dirt and spillage. We have the Limited and it's the best all around vehicle we've owned, and we've owned over 30 vehicles. Great road trip car.
I've never understood what you do for grocery shopping when it's RAINING outside!
@@wolfshanze5980 there's a cover you can slide to shut
Andrey and Nathan best team ever
Some say he was stolen from a carnival. Some say he was found in a stuffing factory leading a revolt. All we know is, he is called JEFF!
And this is why it was so very stupid for Hyundai/Kia to use DCTs in the Sorento, Santa Fe, and Santa Cruz. Not only do DCTs destroy any ability to off-road, they are far less reliable than Hyundai/Kia's 6 and 8 speed automatic.
I agree. DCTs should be left for track-ready sports cars.
@@zachariewright1690 Exactly! DCTs have no place in crossovers, its strange how Hyundai uses them in considering how they have very smooth and reliable 6 and 8 speed automatics while their DCTs have always been unreliable.
But do people really take these as far off road as TFL does?
@@MDKN22 Lol, I hope not. Then again, I've seen Priuses on trails before, so craziness abounds.
@@MDKN22 I get that most people don't often takes these off-road, but even disregarding that, it doesn't change the fact that the DCTs Hyundai/Kia use are very unreliable and jerky at anything less than highway speeds. Its all the more baffling considering how good Hyundai/Kia 6 and 8 speed automatics are.
TFL, have you tried reaching out to your viewers to see if anyone has the Santa Cruz with the non turbo powertrain for you to test?
Interesting comparison. Thank you!
Love the comparison. The only thing you forgot to mention, Premisy tyres are low grip high economy as used by Toyota for the Prius.
I love my santa cruz limited. It's not meant for offloading, but with the truxxx lift and larger at tires it performs exactly how I want. I have a video on my channel if you are wondering what it looks like lifted with tallers at tires
Glad you got away from the ranch some. Though I like the ranch is good to go back to the trails!
Nathan always brightens my day. Never change, Nathan. Never change ❤️
Great comparison. Best duo in TFL.
Started smelling burnt clutch when I read the title.
Great video, gotta be honest I always thought they were the same vehicles just one with a bed & one without. Thanks for clearing that up. 👍🏻
I have a 2006 Pajero and a 2009 Silverado. Both 4WD. And the SUV is better.
Wheelbase and weight are likely in favor of the Pajero there. Would love to get back into one of those, loved the one I had for a bit.
Finally the engine transmission comparison so many have been asking for.
I love these 2 making videos together.
LMBO!!!! You Guys are Hilarious man......Many Thanks for this video and as always you Guys do such an Excellent Job
Its time you explained how a torque converter in an automatic transmission increases delivered torque at low speeds and no its not about high stall speed raising the revs so the engine reaches it torque band. In this comparison you forgot to note how the weight distribution and carrying capacity would affect their off road performance. Since the Sant Cruz can carry a lot more weight and has a worse weight distribution, it will take a lot less articulation to start spinning tires since they will unload much faster. Conversely, most people go off-road with a few passengers and additional weight. This will effectively lower the Tucson more quickly and ground clearance will become a problem faster than the Santa Cruz. Its not always tires or engine power that makes a difference.
If the Santa Cruz belongs to TFL, I would love to see this test repeated with some better tires on it. I think the new BFG Trail Terrain would be a great choice for it.
Its a long term loaner, so I dont think they will be doing any mods to it.
@@Stuka87 They "own" it. Need to follow along. Roman was talking about doing a bunch of mods to it straight away but after careful consideration, changed his mind. (for now) IF you are ever confused, just search for the vehicle and find the 1st video of it where they say whether it is a loaner or purchased. They also did a 2 month review of what it is like living with it, where they once again state they own it.
Or the Mickey Thompson Baja
I have a 2016 GMC Canyon 4x4 with bfg all terrains and it goes anywhere. I've gone through mud, snow and sand. I fo overlanding and light offloading with the truck.
I also have a Tucson that I use for Uber and lyft. It's a great small city suv.
It's that darn dct drivetrain that lets it down though.
Finally a video where someone has a Santa Cruz offroad with the 18" vs the 20" 👏
Up in Canada we have terrain modes like mud, snow, and sand. That might give the Santa Cruz an edge up.
What's better off-road , 12 minutes of what engine it has, what buttons on the inside of the vehicles do and finally 2 minutes if actual off-road 😂 lol
The Santa Cruz really looks better in person too. I saw a white one at my hotel in Austin, TX and was surprised at how much I liked it.
I would pick a Mazda CX5 over the Tucson even though it would cost about $1k to $2k more.
Yes, a much better AWD system on CX5.
The Hyundai has a better curise control system and lane keeping system (also quieter ride), based on my test drives.
“Truck” is a pretty generous word for that thing.
You guys should come down to Davis, OK. and check out CROSSBAR RANCH in the Arbuckle mountains if you haven't already been there. I'd love to see a video of your adventures there.
Using Jeff is actually genius !
I think Hyundai did great with the Santa Cruz. I would pick it over my Honda-Ridgeline if it was $2k cheaper. At near Ridgeline price, the Santa Cruz falls short in room, powertrain, and features.
4 cyl vs V6, However the Santa Cruz has better torque. Driver and front passenger room Santa Cruz takes it easily. Rear seats, Ridgeline takes it easily. same with the truck bed.
Honda needs to do something about te Ridgelines interior. The Ridgeline HPD looks amazing from the outside.
I liked Jeff 😆😆😆
If you want to avoid roll back on the Santa Cruz, use the brake hold function.
Nice shoulder block on the mirror, Nathan.
I have the 2022 Tucson perferred package with the trend package and I believe 17 inch tires I love this car it’s pretty awesome it has the 2.5 na engine and I love that engine it’s pretty good for what it is and I have the 8 speed transmission as well.
Ugh... the 2.5L NA engine at 187HP is just too weak for the Tucson. 0-60 in about 9 seconds... that's terrible. The Tucsons to get are the Hybrid (226HP) and the PHEV (261HP)... both of those actually have the horsepower needed to get in and out of traffic without looking like granny crossing the road using a walker.
I think the Santa Cruz is interesting. I would never buy one thinking I was buying a legit off roader. That would be far from my expectations. It's an urban car based truck which definitely has merit and a lot of utility for what it is.
I would love to see you guys mod the Tucson to make it look tougher… more… Off road like.
the tuscon can hold a full size steelie rim and tire and will cost 1/3 of what the dealer charges for that donut kit....then buy a smaller 1.5 ton harbor freight jack for 60 bucks...again still keeping at at 1/2 the price as the dealer spare kit.....and i have a a few emergency tools and supplies, extra set of clothes, laid out just right under that cover. its a lot more useful than it appears on film, and especially if you use the inner of the rim to store stuff.
I think with the dual clutch if you kept it in manual mode in 1st gear it would help a bit
These need diesel manuals like here in Europe.
I fully agree, however since VW Dieselgate Diesels will NEVER become mainstream here in the US. Hyundai announced a diesel Santa Fe in 2018, it was on their webpage and everything, I was prepared to run out the door and buy it as soon as it hit the dealership, then suddenly everything about it disappeared.
And a manual transmission would be far better than a DCT. So would a torque converter.
The US shoves hybrid and electric garbage at us instead of reliable diesel
I own the hybrid tuscon, and my mother has a santa cruz and yes the tuscon is much better in the back seats. i use mine for uber and no one has ever complained
You guys still can't get the N/A Santa Cruz??
I get this is a somewhat similar comparison between the 2 Santa Cruz options (based on the powertrains), but the wheel base needs to be more comparable
For future, Hyundai turns off wheel braking when you disable traction and stability. It’s not even trying to distribute power left to right if stability is off. Just some little known tips!
Nathan you chose the wrong Tucson to go off road.
The Hybrid Tucson is much better, Better torque and better transmission. The Tucson N-line outside of the US gets a turbo but not here.
Sportage & Tucson and Sorento & Santa Fe.
PLEASE I WANT A VIDEO TOWING WHIT THE TICSON HYBRID NOBODY DID IT YET
I wish you would test a Honda Passport, which is a much better soft roarder than either of these and has a much better AWD system.
We have several videos testing the Passport
My 2017 Tucson goes all over with ease. Get some AT tires, turn off all traction assist, turn on the center locker, and don't just slam the gas down.
I want to see the 23 telluride x-pro and 23 palisade Xrt do this together!!!!
These are definitely NOT vehicles for offroad driving, especially hills like this one. This is a sure method to destroy tires ( at least ) if not, then transmissions too.
But, they got to the top, didn't they? Nathan is correct, better tire for this are more or less, essential.
How tall are yall again. 6'4" wondering if ill fit lol. I sat in a sportage and the windshield ended at my eye height.
I just bought both of these vehicles lol.
Tombstone humbles yet another vehicle 🤣
8:44 lol at the towing capacity claim while showing an absent hitch receiver.
A better comparison should be against the Subaru Forrester and Crosstrek
My 2020 Santa fe 2.0 would make that easy..
More like crossover vs crossover.
Id suggest a bike wrack and a mountain bike to go down the trail ……. Or just a pair of legs instead of taking that anywhere off much more than a gravel or dirt road
The Santa Cruz is NOT a pickup... thats' a modern reincarnation of the El Camino.
You don't take a cap gun to a gunfight.
Why do all auto manufacturers give such low payload capacities. These cars are maxed out so easily
Let us know what the Wife says after you carry some cow crap in the back of the Tucson. :) (or get it filthy with mulch) The Santa Cruz definitely has its place.
99% on road 1% pulling out of driveway in winter
Maybe with the refresh Hyundai will offer the 8spd transmissions in their "offroad" model's.
Lets stop kidding ourselves, both of these vehicles are daily commute and family hauler drivers. Neither of these are built for "off-road" unless your definition of "off-road" is your unpaved driveway when you're coming home from grocery shopping at Walmart. Nothing wrong with either vehicle, they are both perfect for their intended role (which is NOT off-roading).
In the Cruz, the passenger, Stay Puff Man in a seat belt 👻
yea why are they using a DCT in that thing anyway... its not a fast vehicle that needs quick shifting... its very odd. I would imagine the regular transmission is far less expensive as well.
The non-turbo is about $3k cheaper if I recall correctly. I drove both and ended up buying the turbo. The non-turbo literally has less pep than my wife's 2000 Toyota Sienna. For driving on pavement 95% of the time, the turbo does it for me. The turbo is also the only way to get the full 5000lb towing capacity. NA gets 3500 max.
Would the Santa Fe not be more compatible to the Santa Cruz?
Would love to see the PHEV of the Tucson tested. And maybe an experiment done with modifying the front bumper to improve approach? I'm strongly considering one but we've got a lot of cross ditches and water bars here I'd rather not smooch
The N-Line Tucson is a waste... it's an appearance package only from the base Tucson. I don't know why they talked about the N-Line like it's something special, it has the same weak engine (187HP) the cheapest Tucson has and zero extra power. The PHEV Tucson on the other hand has the most horsepower of all Tucsons (261HP), and it's night and day in the power category... I have the 2023 Hybrid Tucson (226HP) and it would do much better on that test than the N-Line.
Santa cruz is just Tucson opened up
yet Nathan would eventually buy a Santa Cruz
The "interior comfort" segment with Jeff seemed out of place for this video. The video is billed as an off-road evaluation. Rear seat room has nothing to do with it.
More maverick
Maybe it's just me but the auto industry seems to produce junk. Then they change the next model with minor changes that don't make the vehicle any better. Most SUVS don't even come with trailer hitches from the factory. 95% of the cars on the road are over priced grocery getters !
They're literally both crossovers lol
Isn’t this what you built your own test track for?
I like Tumbleweed Ranch but I also like to see them out on the trails they have used in the past.
Since neither are really "off road" vehicles…why are we doing this? Lol
Anyone who bought either of these vehicles to do serious off-roading deserves the results they will get.
I'm betting a 1998 Ford ranger does better than these off road.
The Santa Cruz may be a perfectly fine vehicle that meets the needs of a certain segment of the population - but can we please stop calling these things "trucks"? We need to draw the line somewhere, and this thing with its AWD, DCT and unibody is not any more of a truck than a Subaru Brat was.
I draw the line when you can legally choose to ignore specialized highway signs telling real trucks what to do. You know, the ones that say "Trucks Reduce Speed, Truck Speed Limit, Brake Retarders prohibited, Truck Weight Limit, Truck Detour"
Looks like a 2022 El Camino to me.
Tyranny swap at kobold shop!
I used to own a hyundai. Reliability was crap. Never touching one again.
Lol love how you keep on mentioning “used to” like if they are the same anymore, always have to be a badge snob commenting
emphasis on “used to”
As if he would hang onto a POS that is unreliable??? Now if he decided to keep an unreliable POS, that would be grounds to give him a hard time
@@brandtphillips5825 they aren’t unreliable anymore.
@@bradleyscarreviews consumer reports would disagree with you, as would the piles of crates of engines that dealers have on hand
SUV's are more capable off road but both of these vehicles are awful.
Who in their right mind would buy either of these
Why would anyone drive a Hyundai
Why do you’ll badge snob have to be even commenting on these Hyundai vids?
someone other than narrow minded people like you
Unfortunately some people can't afford something better, enjoy worse than average reliability, or they just enjoy ugly and exaggerated Korean styling
💩 vs 💩. What change? Both are perfectly the same.
That Santa Cruz is the UGLIEST truck I've ever seen with my eyes. Geez that bad. Why are the back ends getting so bad over time!
ok
Because people who buy Hyundais like ugly styling that gets worse with every redesign
It looks like a damn warthog from HALO. That's a big plus to some people, and to some people, it means absolutely nothing.
It's not a truck! At least have some idea what you are talking about!
its cool looking
TFL reviews are so so so boring.
