I'm surprised Mat didn't mention that Yuri became pretty defensive in Act 2 and denied the main character's comment that she reminded him of the Portrait of Markov protagonist. That'd be a solid piece of evidence about her being Libitina.

Yep, for once MatPat didn't even use all the possible evidence to prove his theory. Monika even makes a comment about the book, but before she starts talking about it, she cuts herself off.
This is part one. In the second part, he does go into detail with it and does mention Yuri denying and being defensive with the Portrait of Markov protagonist.
Katie Whelan, I was about to comment that but u beat me to it! But there was a little bit of misinformation on the part where they decoded a line code, and say Monika was the one that wrote it, the one where it ends with "2018". But remember, if this was Monika, she would have stated so like she did on the steam's page. And again, this seem like a message from the protagonist rather than Monika herself. Why? When Sayori replaces Monika right after we deleted her, Monika stated that "you cant hurt him", the "him" here assumed that we, the player, are male. When in reality she mentioned b4, when everyone is gone from the game, that she dont know whether u are a girl or a boy. Which proves a point that the protagonist is a seperate entity from us players, playing as him. And there were lines from that text that hinted that it is not Monika.
So the mentioned hero here will be just us, the player, and the protagonist, the 5th character that actually has a concious of their own.
I think Monika writing the message has more going for it than the protaganist. The way it is written seems like how Monika would talk.
yeah also we dont know the name of the protagonist, we name him, but if he is other character them he should and most have a name... that we dont know or ever read in the game so... yeah i also think is monika

To add to this theory, to help it, there is a bit of dialogue that mentions this. When it’s down to Just Monika in the game/Act 3 she references Yuri’s book, the Portrait Of Markov. Barely. Let’s just simplify by quoting what she says:
“Hey, you know that book you were reading with Yuri? Portrait of... whatever it was called... It’s funny, because I’m pretty sure that book- Ah... Actually, I don’t think I should be talking about this. Ahaha, sorry! Just forget I said anything.”

It's also just cool to see how small things COULD link together, it's not like the channel is called GameFacts lol
I think the reason people get upset isn't necessarily because of matpat, it's because of his fan base that takes every one of his theories as fact.

I'm *always* skeptical when it comes to Game Theory, but I watch all of them. I like to see the theories then decide myself, whether or not that is actually plausible with the information provided, I think he did really well on this one though.

Fun theory I picked up from this video:
If you convert their names to hiragana, only Yuri's name is written with 2 characters, while everyone else uses 3. Assuming then that the name Yuri is important, I learned that it means lily, which seems to match the flower in her red thread pic. Specifically, it looks to be a day lily, the Chinese symbol for motherhood. Interesting, then, that the last thing Yuri told us about her book was the cult's breeding program.
I feel like I'm reaching with that, but with the Japanese idea of a red thread of fate, and those threads emerging from Yuri's flower, I'm fairly sure there's something being missed there.
Another thought I had is that when Yuri dies, we're forced to sit with her corpse for two days in game time before Monika deletes everything, thereby making a timeless realm. Afterwards, the game is restored and Yuri returns. In other words, she rises on the third day. If she is the villain in the new, cult-based game, what better detail could we expect for a potential antichrist figure?
There's also the fact that the flower is called a red spider lily and it's the symbol of death in Japan's language of flowers.

And the Japanese influence is obviously there, as ddlc is clearly a 'Japanese novel game' and japanese in setting ie the school and environment. And the names obviously hold importantance because all 3 girls have Japanese names except Monika, so to say there there is Japanese meaning behind Yuri's isn't a stretch at all!

No, theories are meant to propose an idea that is potentially true but lacks enough confirmation to be confirmed facts. And if the theories cannot hold up under the slightest scrutiny (basically all of them except FNAF somehow) because the facts instantly disprove them, then they may as well be thrown out the window.

It should really be called "Game Speculation Mixed With Confirmation Bias," if we want to be accurate. But because it's a "theory," if it doesn't have a possibility of being true, people get upset. For good reason. Theories proven wrong aren't theories. They're fiction.
His FNAF stuff was literally confirmed by Scott Cawthon. Everything else I've watched (quite a lot) seems to conveniently forget certain facts that are obvious and apparent in their games the moment Game Theory wants to make some nonsense up.
Sure, like his Loot Box video which was nothing but science and politics that missed nothing from games, or Mario punching Yoshi, which was confirmed by Nintendo, the Chaos Emerald video which was all about how they can't be real emeralds based on color, Bottle Flip Challenge, which he demonstrated he was right, Until Dawn's video was correct as well. And that's just off the top of my head

In the weekend of the first act is when you find out about all characters problems:
Sayori's depression (directly),
Monika's manipulative behavior (Sayori mentions Monika's telling her about the main character's meeting and after that encounter she says Monika was right about something, fill the gaps after knowing Monika's intentions),
if in Yuri's encounter, Yuri's self-harm (Yuri was left in alone with her work and a knife from her collection, main character comes back to his room and Yuri quickly hides her arm, fill the gaps with what you know about Yuri)
and if in Natsuki's encounter, Natsuki daddy issues (when main character tells her that it's okay to eat a cupcake she says her dad is making dinner so she needs to save appetite)
the reason for that is because she isn't feed regularly therefore she doesn't want to lose appetite for the only dinner she will have in days. Word choice indicates that it isn't about finishing a plate of food or get scolded, it's more to the lines of eat as much as you can because you don't know how long it will be until the next meal.

Maybe not. In the first part of the game she gives Sayori a cookie. If her dad was already abusive she wouldn't give Sayori a cookie or really even be able to buy one in the first place. Also one of the secret poems show that her dad was nice but progressively got more abusive. Maybe the day Yuri or Natsuki comes over is when Monika screws them over
Actually...Monika is not "all powerful" since there was a time when she could not control the world as it went into poem time. Maybe to change someone personality she would need to do it in a more indirect way, that would explain why instead of simpling pulling a lever and making Sayori from depressed to suicidal she simply told her things that made her that way. So instead i guess Monika edited Natsuki's backstory so she would grow up to be like that.

This was a really well put together theory video. When I first watched it, I didn't expect there to be that much hidden away. It's important to note, though, that Game Theory is all about speculation. He talks about the hate he gets once in a while during the livestreams, and I think there's a disconnect between what he thinks of his videos and what a lot of his viewers think of his videos. I always think of it from a literature perspective. You can focus on whatever you need to in order to make your point. It's about promoting discussion and trying to think of things on a deeper level. It isn't necessarily about being right, it's just about finding evidence to support a concept. It's about interpretation. I wrote an English paper for college that said the game Dante's Inferno was a modern version of the Greek Orpheus and Eurydice myth, and that it had a happy ending because gamers expect a sense of accomplishment that wouldn't be fulfilled if Beatrice hadn't been saved by Dante. Doesn't mean it has any basis in reality. Just means I can make connections if I try hard enough. I would say it's the same thing with the FNAF argument. He thought of something interesting and jumped into it because it was an interesting concept to him. What if this media can be interpreted in a way the creator didn't intend? Happens all the time in literature circles. It's about the critical thinking exercises and seeing what you can pull from the text, film, or game to make a convincing argument, not about being right all the time. Mario's probably not a sociopath, Sans probably isn't Ness, and I doubt any of the Nintendo girls had breast implants (all videos he's done at one point or another) but it's fun to jump in and find the connections anyway. At least for me. ^_^
I actually heard that he said he didn't really believe Sans was Ness, he just wanted to give the viewers a different point to look from and show them some secrets wihtin the game. But of course, I haven't seen it myself.

Theories are immediately invalid as soon as they are disproved. Speculation is sort of fun, but getting to a possibly correct conclusion that can't immediately be disproven? That's the capstone of a theory. When you're thinking, "He could be right," you're having fun. When you're thinking, "Um, this very basic fact that was very obvious unravels the whole thing," you're not having fun. Problem is that MatPat either doesn't realize this or doesn't care.
Chameleonred5 I think at the very heart of it, you are overcomplicating what a guy does in CZcams largely for the sake of fun and just giving something to communities as his own share of the pie into something like a renewed physicist screwing up hard on something that matters. These are games, and we do these theories for fun, and we speculate for fun, and nobody is gonna be aggravated or hurt because they may have gotten something wrong unless there was someone wrongfully insulting someone else, in the case of for example Mat insulting Toby over his own game, which wasn't ever the case, or selling your opinion as any hard and undeniable fact that you make and show others your opinion is the correct one, or a lot of other stuff matpat really doesn't do. Literally, you remind me of a more polite version of this idiotic youtuber that's very well known in the DB anime circle and does some debunking videos, one of which felt like a personal attack on another smaller member that did something for the sake of speculation and his own fun, using official statements and good old math. And then the imbecile of a youtuber tells his subscribers not to wail on him, after doing it himself, but that he had to make the video to "stop the spread of misinformation". Misinformation about freaking Dragon Ball like it's a big deal, like the dude himself hadn't said from minute 1 "this is speculative, I'm likely to be wrong, and I am just doing this for the fun of it and the entertainment of others".

I'm making a minor critique of a CZcams channel on a completely different channel's video in a comments section that people are unlikely to read. I was actually enjoying this until you guys started to shade (even if it’s minor) Matpat. It’s a theory as in...not facts. You have to appreciate all the work that had went into finding out all the information in this theory even from the reddit people. It’s also for entertainment purposes so you don’t have to take everything literally. I still enjoyed the video but I just had to speak my mind on how irritated that made me.
A theory is potentially true. If it's not, then it's just false information. If they are very obvious, contradicting facts, then it's not a theory.

To be honest, I liked his Fnaf 4 theory. It wasn't because of his negligence to Scott Cawthon, but because of what he was teaching. I wasn't aware of how important the frontal lobe was until that video aired. I saw his remark to Scott as a sort of nudge to his ego, a sort of fun jab. The reason for disrespecting MatPat for that reason is just pitiful.

Have you seen his "Who is Gaster" theory? He pretty much addresses all the complaints about his Undertale stuff in that. And the theory itself is pretty good as well.
"a non serious theory" most of his theorys are not serious if you look at it like that and its not just that, everytime hes covered a game i've liked i've been able to see how it's bullshit up until this one (because i was not aware of the reddit posts) showing that even the slightest bit of info on a subject he covers can disprove his theorys pretty easily, i still find him entertaining to watch sometimes but dont be so quick to automatically jump to his defense when you dont have an actual arguement.
Sans is Ness is actually a good video, he had the evidence and honestly looking at the author it would make sense. Fans just didnt want a connection so they over attacked him for it.

The new game sounds terrible(as a plot), so it would be great that getting a good ending in the new game will allow all four girls to get their happy life in Doki Doki.
Since you guys watched through the entirety of Gravity Falls, you guys should watch Over The Garden Wall eventually! (Probably once autumn/fall/halloween rolls in.) It's a 10-part miniseries with each episode being about 10 minutes long, but it has a similar artstyle, a mesmerizing soundtrack, and a whole collection of odd, quirky, and sometimes maybe-just-a-bit-scary characters to watch out for over the course of the series.

On a completely unrelated note, everyone seems to hate MatPat mostly because he said Scott was wrong about his own game, but this isn't necessarily what he did. He was saying Scott was wrong about the effects about the frontal lobe being torn off, a conclusion he came to because of the sole fact that the only way to differentiate the bites of 83' and 87', was interacting with the specific background object in the specific flashback.

This is the first video I watched of yours and I unfortunately can't finish even finish it. The shade to MatPat was unneeded, if you don't like Game Theory then don't watch it. Plus the sound is all echo-y so Idk why that is but its kind of annoying.

The subject about Natsuki not getting much of an ending is kinda true. Like Yuri if you flirt with her the whole first part of the game she gives you a love poem. If your talking about her not really being in the spot light by killing herself then I see what you mean

now that i listen to everything after your guys' questions and explanations after the story, maybe monika is the longest to survive before you and sayori get there, making monika the main heroine however, if she died then sayori would take that roll. Natsuki could be the cult leaders daughter or part of the cult because of her father but not converted yet which could be her hatred towards her father. then there is Yuri is the monster that would try to kill everyone, but there is an ending where you can help her suppress the third eye as she was incapable of doing so before, just needing a reason to, that reason being that she no longer wants to kill, she has something she wants to protect from even herself.
so the One descripincy is that more of the fans believe that the person who talks to you in Monika's file is The MC of Doki Doki not Monika. mainly because the "you already know my name" because your the one who named them. Also its pretty safe to assume that Elyssa is Natsuki. its hard to tell if Libatina's game is just another game or the real world in the context of the canon story and that doki doki is the meta game within a game or not.

yeah but its still an indie game, my guess is that it will probably be in first person so saying that person is Monika in another form is kinda inconsequential. i mean we know their not gonna use the anime art style so.
I would almost agree that the letter could be from the MC/PC of Doki Doki, except for one thing: the letter seems to apologize to the reader for what they put them through. The PC in Doki Doki was a victim. Monika put EVERYONE through a lot of shit in DDLC. She truly comes to regret it by the end, and tries to make up for it with one last attempt at a happy world, by removing herself. When that doesn't work, she ends the club, but she's truly regretful to do so.
The letter mentions that they "don't think you're evil", and that you've "helped me/us so much". Both of which are things Monika expresses by the end of DDLC.
Its still just a theory though... if i had to guess the game is most likely going to be a survival horror game so knowing if its supposed to be monika really wouldn't matter if its in first person

You guys should watch some of the GTLive streams. Matpat is an extremely nice guy who helps the community and tries his hardest on his videos. It really irritated me to see you guys being so rude when talking about him. It's clear you don't know him at all.
Fun fact: the “nightmare” posters that feature the girls being tied with red string weren’t made by Satchely (the artist who drew the characters within the game), but by someone else, who I’m pretty sure didn’t participate in making the game itself, at all. This means they can’t be considered official art, but instead are fan art (further supported by the fact that their merch store has more strictly fan art now), and so the symbolism in them doesn’t exactly have to match what the developers had in mind. Also, I agree that the string coming out of Yuri is a pretty big stretch. If anything, it’s more likely that the string punctuates what happens to the girls thanks to Monika’s tampering (considering it’s wrapped around Sayori’s neck), so in Yuri’s case it symbolizes her fatal stabbing, while Monika, being completely unmolested and the string only manifesting as a neat bow tie for her, is made out to be the point of origin.
The whole point of Game theory is to theorize about games even if it’s a stretch like his Mario videos. it’s still interesting and entertaining to watch.
I’m also surprised matpat didn’t mention that when you choose someone besides Monika in act 2 of the game and you get two eyes on a white screen, they aren’t monika’s. They’re blue. They’re either sayoris or yuris.

I've watched a decent amount of your guys' reactions but this one just really bothered me. MatPat makes THEORIES, which are ideas that are made to possibly explain vague questions about a subject or topic. Unless it was proven to be fact, it isn't. I thought that was obvious.

Yea ultimately it wasnt even the infamous bite of '87 and therefore was (more or less) pointless to bring up in regards to the game, but as a history/psychology segment it was interesting... People did some REEEEEAALLLYYY fucked up things in the past if it meant they MIGHT be "cured" (cuz hey you only use 10% of your brain after all , why keep the whole thing lol)

It's a great theory, but I ultimately think there is more evidence to support Natsuki being Libitina. She matches almost all of the symptoms just as well as Yuri does - albeit much more subtly. Furthermore, the BMI given on Project Libitina would place Libitina as underweight. Granted, for Yuri, it would have been 15 years earlier that the BMI was taken (she is 18 as of DDLC). But let's actually take another look at this whole age thing. According to Project Libitina, Libitina was born on January 5th, 2001 (this immediately eliminates Monika, born on September 22nd). This game seems to take place in 2016, which would make Libitina about 16 years old when the game takes place. This would not befit Sayori (who didn't show most symptoms anyways) or Yuri (who seems to be a senior). However, it would befit Natsuki, who, according to the Main Character, was a first year student (the average age for a first year student in Japan would be 15-16).

i wonder if it is going to be visual novel in art form but choice based gameplay where it uses those love meters as something close to sanity meters of all other girls based on your choices, for instance: if you get closer to Yuri, maybe she kills everyone else but not you in a yandere fashion, or help her successfully suppress as her third eye blood lust seeing as it failed before, saving the other girls, or at least who was still alive.

Pretty much. Multiple worlds; having to have other characters remember past lives to reach a happy ending, the bloodlust is also kind of like hinamizawa syndrome. Both have an after-school club where shit goes wrong around a festival.
Sayori reminds me of Rena (both greet the protag in the beginning and have a side they don't show to him), Natsuki reminds me of Satoko (one of the younger members of the club, abusive caretakers, can cook etc). Monika only slightly reminds me of Rika (just for her self awareness).
