  • Fred Perry Pavilion Bukit Jalil Grand Opening Party 12th May 2022.
In its 11th year in Malaysia, FRED PERRY, the iconic British streetwear brand opens its doors to its 6th Authentic Shop at the largest fully integrated regional lifestyle mall in the Southern Corridor; Pavilion Bukit Jalil.
The 1400 square feet shop is the first to showcase a double glass door entrance, an LED screen plus a neon Laurel Wreath at the windows; similar to FRED PERRY shops globally. The walls are covered with classic photos of the tennis champ himself including posters of models in the signature FRED PERRY Shirt, all of which are QR scan-able leading to a playlist. Each collection is positioned in such a way that takes a shopper through a journey, moving from collection to collection; the classy FRED PERRY Shirt dress in the women’s section to the preppy Sharp & Reissues collection to the FRED PERRY Shirt wall, Sports and another first - the Barrel Bag wall.
In conjunction with the Grand Opening, FRED PERRY also launched ‘The Original Twin Tipped Fred Perry Shirt’, the M12 City Shirts in 4 new colourways. They are Manchester Blue, Toronto Green, Riyadh Gold and the hero of them all, Kuala Lumpur Neon (reflecting the neon lights of Petaling Street where the FRED PERRY Embassy store was once located). Black base, with bright yellow and Kuala Lumpur Neon tipping in its classic 5-4-4 ratio; all made in England. This is the first time in the history of FRED PERRY, has Kuala Lumpur been named as a colourway.
The Grand Opening kicked off with an in-store performance by soul artist Dani Komari and her band. The soul singer wowed the audience with her voice that is wildly reminiscent of the late Amy Winehouse, a long time collaborator of FRED PERRY. After the performance, the eager audience of fans and friends of FRED PERRY were given a tour around the shop while enjoying artisanal popcorn by Des Puffmeister as well as ‘initially sold out of the car boot’ Vietnamese coffee by Kee Nguyen Coffee served in traditional liquor styled bottles. Guests who were a little more adventurous were invited to get complimentary Amy Winehouse ‘hearts’ tattoos by Electric Dreams Tattoo Collective.
Popular among subcultures like the skinheads and punks as well as the ‘indie’ kids, FRED PERRY is further cementing its prominence here in Malaysia as a staple streetwear brand with the opening of its latest store. With British fashion and music at its core, local arts practitioners have long gravitated towards the brand. Prominent names like Gerhana Ska Cinta, The Times, OAG, Toko Kilat, Plague of Happiness as well as the cult favourites, Kapow, Masdo & Pastel Lite, have all donned FRED PERRY. The brand in Malaysia has always had its feet in music and in conjunction with the opening of the new store is proud to announce the month of May as ‘Fred Perry Shirt Month’. For the first time ever, 15 brand ambassadors have been selected to showcase their stories through stills and moving pictures. The ambassadors range from musicians, tattoo artists, barbers to mixologists and photographers; art at its core and very grassroots which makes it very very Fred Perry.
Starting from the month of May, expect a flood of FRED PERRY ambassador video stories to be featured across all platforms with its goal to educate the public and to shed light on subcultures in Malaysia. The brand has always been about its stories just like the ever so popular Twin Tipped Fred Perry shirt that has been a part of the British subcultural uniform since the 1950s. Each colourway has its own story. For instance the Black/Champagne/Champagne piece which was a subtle mark of anti-establishment. Among the ambassadors are Dani Komari, a singer/songwriter who teaches underprivileged kids with an NGO, the crew from Electric Dreams Tattoo Collective, a prominent tattoo crew with members from legendary Borneo Ink and The Oven Cuttery, a modern day barber with Kevin Tan, who’s also a musician leading the way. All of which have interesting stories to tell that ties in with the brand ethos.
FRED PERRY has always been a sign of the working class and has positioned itself as an emblem of the outsider and of all subcultures often describing the polos as “the uniform of the non-uniform”. The doors to FRED PERRY Pavilion Bukit Jalil are officially opened to the public.
