Babies respond to their mother's voice out early on because they heard it a lot while developing. I reacted similarly to the music of Ms. Pacman as to my parent's voices when I was a very little baby because of how frequently my mom played it. I still have fond memories of that game.

I think the analogy you're looking for is that Sonic was the Bugs Bunny to Mario's Mickey.
Not "edgy," per se, but more sassy, fun-loving, and irreverent, while still being decidedly kid-friendly, and more importantly, not trying too hard. (Which is the part most of his imitators failed to grasp.)
Also Mega Man 2 definitely had passwords for every combination of the Robot Masters having been beaten. They just weren't in the Nintendo Power issue. You had to either write them down yourself (I had MANY sheets of paper strewn around my house with that password grid!) or get them from a friend.

28:00 Something I only learned recently is that in Japan, Zelda 1 and Metroid released on the Famicom Disk System, instead of a standard Famicom cartridge. So Metroid in Japan could save, and the save file screen looks really similar to the Zelda one. The disk technology was essentially just floppy disks, so the games could save directly to the disk.
The reason we got the battery backed SRAM technology, was because Nintendo ended up not bringing the disk add-on to North America, and needed to get Zelda and Metroid onto cartridges for the NES.
They ended up removing the save function from Metroid, replacing it with a password system. And they gave Zelda the battery, and an MMC1 chip, the first game to include a memory mapper - this needed to happen because Zelda took advantage of the extra RAM that the Disk System had. So the game had to be reprogrammed to utilize the mapper chip, in order to maintain the integrity of the port.
All NES games before Zelda simply maxed out with the console's 2KB of WRAM and 2KB VRAM, but the MMC1 allowed for up to 32KB of RAM to "Bank switch" (the console was still limited to its built in RAM, but the MMC1 could pull more data in and out storing it on the cartrdige temporarily - thats a very surface level explanation, probably with incorrect numbers from memory lol). These mapper chips became more and more common, some developers made their own, but Nintendo's MMC1 and MMC3 were some of the most common. The pinnacle was the MMC5 which honestly could have changed the console if it came out earlier. Ultimately only a few games used it, as the SNES was already out. One of the things the MMC5 included was additional sound channels, however the NES in NA didn't have the technology included to utilize them. But the Famicom did in Japan. Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse used the MMC5, so the music in the Japanese version sounds *wrong* (amazing) coming out of a famicom (Here's a comparison: czcams.com/video/6x1CTloA7Nc/video.html ).
    Ramble ramble.
I started learning how to program NES games in 6502 assembly a while back, but wasn't able to keep up with it after a while. Thats why I know this. lmao. I hope to get back to it eventually.

    • @arcadelinkauthor
      @arcadelinkauthor Před měsícem

Pardon me as I ramble some more:
The reason that it makes sense for Metroid to use the password system is because there is very little that actually needs to be saved.
There are 8 major items, which can be stored in a single byte:
That byte with just Morph Ball could Look like: 10000000
That byte with Morph Ball, Missiles and Long Beam: 11100000
Each item requiring only one single bit. Either you have it or you don't.
I can't remember if the password returns your health as well, but if you include that, and which bosses were defeated, literally everything that needs to be saved could probably be done in a handful bytes, and an equation can turn a few bytes into a short password pretty quickly.
While Zelda has lots of items, bosses, money, bombs, etc.

I still have an old Sega Genesis hooked up, and to this day I often pop in some of my favorite classic games. Without a doubt, I loved the SNES back in the day; it had stellar games like F-Zero, Super Castlevania, and Super Mario World (10/10 games for sure), but there’s something special about the Genesis classics that might be matched but can never be topped.
I’d bet it’s the synthesizer sounding music chip, the art style of the games (shockingly limited to only 61 colors), the amazing six-button controller, and most of all, the unique library of games.
The Sega games are so interesting and unmatchable: Ristar, Streets of Rage 1-3, Greatest Heavyweights, Sonic 1-3, Gunstar Heroes, Road Rash, Golden Axe, NBA Jam (& TE), MLBPA Baseball (& Sports Talk & World Series Baseball), NHL 94, Montana & Madden Football, Mortal Kombat, Castlevania Bloodlines, Comix Zone, Shining Force 1-2, Toe Jam & Earl, Aladdin, Outrun, Super Monaco GP, Dragon’s Fury, Shinobi, Alicia Dragoon, Street Fighter 2 CE (& Super SF2), and Virtua Racing.
And there are many more guilty pleasure games that I’ll revisit on more rare occasions, games like Primal Rage, Top Gear, Crueball, Chuck Rock, Cool Spot, Tecmo Super NBA Basketball, Sonic 3D Blast, Ecco the Dolphin, Two Crude Dudes, Dashin’ Desperados, Sunset Riders, Kid Chameleon, and Columns.
My question to anyone that reads this is - which system was your favorite when you were 16 years old? That was the Genesis for me - it’s part of my mental makeup, and that favorite system of yours (when you were, or are, 16) will likely become a significant part of your mental makeup too :-)

For the generation Brandon and Dan missed, yes it was a CD console vs a Cartridge console. But it wasn't as straightforward as the CD being better. Yes it was a bit more powerful but the CD format led to horrendous load times especially for games early in the generation. As someone whose childhood was defined by that generation I couldn't stand the playstation because of the amount of waiting any time you entered a new loading zone, which could be quite often for some games. The Nintendo 64 also came out swinging hard by having excellent entries of it's classic titles transitioning flawlessly to 3D, most notably Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Sony did win out in the end and the much higher capabilities of CD were a big part of that, but it wasn't as if the Nintendo 64 couldn't compete.

If you still have a snes and some of ur games aren’t saving then u just need to open it up and replace the battery. Even the GameCube didn’t have save functionality u needed to use a save card. N64 used the cartridge batteries too

The Dreamcast wasn't a late PS1/N64 competitor, it was an early PS2/GC/Xbox competitor. The Saturn was Sega's huge flop from the 32 bit era. Both were rushed out the door to try and get a head start on the competition.
The Saturn launch was horribly mismanaged, iirc it was not very easy to develop for, and the hardware wasn't optimized for the kind of 3d graphics that were taking over gaming.
The Dreamcast hardware was actually quite good for something coming a year earlier and for a lower price. And it had an amazing library of games. And it was the first to have built in online play. Unfortunately, they just never got enough momentum or public awareness to overcome Sony's massive advantage of having a hundred million PS1 owners, most of whom were somewhat more casual gamers who didn't keep track of all things gaming. The vast majority of the market just went from PS1 to PS2 and barely noticed the other consoles existed.

  • @Psi-alpha

The story of the dreamcast is really sad. Sega of america sent people to japan to warn the main branch that the marketing wasnt working and they had to change their strategy, but Sega of Japan ignored the warnings and doubled down and ended up going under.
The Dreamcast was more powerful than the playstation and Nintendo 64, and it had online capabilities way before the other consoles.
It was ahead of it's time.

Back to the game history bits!
2:26 I think Dan is referring to Second Samurai.
4:15 Turbografx was not 16-bit or a late entry! It competed with the Family Computer in Japan. It launched about the same time as the Genesis in the US and it advertised 16-bits, but that rests on a dumb technicality that basically no one agrees is legitimate - looked good though.
4:35 ET is overemphasized in the story of the North American Home Video Game Crash. I don't agree with revisionists who try to claim it was a good game, but the mythical story about ET is not true.
6:09 The Turbografx (more accurately the PC Engine) did have the first CD addon of a video game console. It was well before most people could afford a CD-ROM drive in their computers.
7:00 The early video games did not use MIDI, they were specifically generated sounds in the hardware. Only in the era of soundfonts (basically the Amiga and the SNES) could you categorize that as MIDI.
12:10 I just have to chuckle at thinking the Jaguar was Sega.
13:06 Dan's reasoning is mostly correct. While there was a SMALL window for Sega to succeed, Sony buried them with their money.
15:30 Techniucally - according to lore - Diablo was actually released the very last day of 1996. For all intents and purposes a 1997 game. (I do find it very funny that these two LDS guys have vivid memories of super violent and slightly sacrilegious games.)
16:21 The PlayStation has MvC and the sequel was available on both PS2 and Xbox (though after the Dreamcast was dead).
16:27 There are no Sega characters in MvC.
17:40 The PlayStation was a 32-bit processor. Not that it really mattered - bits are not really an absolute figure of console power.
18:25 Mario 64 DS is a fundamentally different experience from the original. I'm not sure Brandon would say the original is excellent as in retrospect a lot of people say they think it's aged terribly! (I am not among them.)
20:10 Rise of the Triad came out before Goldeneye but Brandon could have experienced it afterwards, of course. Heck, I was playing Unreal Tournament 2004 in the late part of the decade at school.
20:48 Technically this would be Dynasty Warriors 2 or 3 - the original Dynasty Warriors was a fighting game.
24:18 This was more than likely the Intellivision - which was after Atari.
26:33 Another technicality - The Goonies 2. There was a Goonies 1 for computer platforms.
27:53 There were technically one or two cartridge games that had a battery backup before Zelda, though they were more for saving scores than progress.
28:25 How this usually worked is that they corresponded letters of the code to spaces in memory, so there were repeated patterns you could crack if the passcode wasn't ciphered.

I think i've heard this assessment of Battletoads a couple of times, and i have to say, it's somewhat misleading. It is true that the second to last level is a very difficult vehicle level that is unique from everything up until that point. It's also extremely hard, the timing is extremely tight. I read somewhere once that the level was easier when played on original hardware, including older TVs, but still not "easy". I forget and can't find the explanation posted anywhere.
However, this wasn't a unique, one-off thing for that game. There are 12 levels. 3, 5, 7 and 10 are all vehicle levels. And they are all different.
Level 2 has you rappelling down a giant hole, using different movement and fights mechanics, which only reappear for tunnel level (9) in the form of the little whirly birds that you attach to your belt.
Level 9 also has swimming. It's only for one part of that level, and never appears again.
Level 1 has you riding around on dragons for like a 2 minute section, that never happens again.
The entire game is a series of unique mechanics and stages that must be individually mastered. So the unicycle level near the end is unique, but also not out of place for that game

18:29 you need to compare Final Fantasy 7 on PS with Ocarina of time on N64. Nintendo had better garphics in those times then PS even thought they had way less memory

The playstation was design to be extra storage for the Nintendo 64. However Nintendo back out of the deal late in the hour, so Sony took what they designed up to that point and turned it into their own console. At the time I was such a big Nintendo fan, but looking back I should have been a Playstation person as the PS had way more games that I enjoyed. Also it was weird growing up being a Nintendo fan but not liking Mario. The only Mario game I've beaten is Mario 64 and never had the urge to try more.

Dan, it's killing me. You gotta clarify for me. Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (4 and 6 in Japan) were not on the original Nintendo (the NES), they were on Super Nintendo (released August 1991), and the actual Final Fantary 2 and 3 for NES/Famicom, were not localized for the US.
What were the actual games you played? Or are you misremembering which console you had?

I have never understood the console wars. Being loyal to a company who just wants to sell you something makes zero sense. It's like going to Walmart and saying I would never shop at Target. If they have something you need, why would you not go to both of them?

    • @arthurmarshall6825
      @arthurmarshall6825 Před měsícem +1

Yeah but it felt more like being apart of a sports team. Also a lot parents probably didnt want or afford both systems so kids only got one. The console wars help fight the insecurity that you got the inferior system.

PS1 had CDs and N64 was on cartiridges, but the N64 wqs *massively* more powerful...so N64 games hold up better, oddly enough, as arcade style experiences and the models for future 3D games. But the bigfest N64 games were 64 MB only, compared to like 700 for PS1.

Just some info for quick reference, because they get a lot wrong in this episode, because the 80's were a long time ago now. lol
So here's just a rundown of some console info, because... something something special interest something something.
This isn't everything, but a lot of the major points:
    Console Generation 1
    Pong
    Magnavox Odyssey
    Console Generation 2 (8-bit generation)
    Atari 2600
    ColecoVision
(Commodore 64 was not a "console," it was a home computer, but it would be here if it were considered a console).
Console Generation 3 (the true realization of the 8-bit generation)
    Nintendo Entertainment System 1983JP/1985NA
    Sega Master System 1985JP/1986NA
Console Generation 4 (16-bit generation, goodbye arcades)
TurboGrafx-16 [("PC Engine" in japan) was the FIRST 16-bit console released in 1987 (JP) and 1989 (NA). Was extremely successful in Japan.]
    Sega Genesis 1988JP/1989NA, Sega CD 1991JP/1992NA, Sega 32X 1994, Sega CDX 1994
    Super Nintendo 1990JP/1991NA
Console Generation 5 (transition from 2D to 3D)
-Sony Playstation (Was the result of Nintendo bailing on a collaboration with Sony, they basically told sony how to do a good game console, and created a monster lol - whats funnier is that Nintendo did the same thing to Phillips almost immediately after, intending to create a disc add-on for the SNES, and bailed on them too. Though Philips were clearly not paying attention, and created the CD-i instead of a Playstation.)
-Nintendo 64 (was more powerful and technically advanced than the PS1, but was held back by the use of expensive low capacity cartridges, where PS1 had high capacity discs. N64 would outperform PS1 if it used discs. Alas, they screwed up. But at least there were no load times.)
-Sega Saturn - Sega messed up already by wasting all their money and R&D budget during the last generation. They were messing up a lot around this time, and they would never really recover.
Console Generation 6 (PS2 takes gaming mainstream)
Sega Dreamcast - (Arguably the best console of this generation, and was ahead of its time, but Sega just wasn't able to support it, nor were they able to get 3rd parties to support it because of their mess in the last 2 generations.)
    Nintendo Gamecube
    Playstation 2
    Xbox
Console Generation 7 (gaming is cool now, even your grandma plays)
    Nintendo Wii
    Playstation 3
    Xbox 360
