The Wire - Season Five Opening Scene

- The Bunk extracts a confession from a suspect using manipulation and a mock polygraph test. His reasoning gives the episode its epigraph "the bigger the lie, the more they believe." (Season 5 Episode 1 "More with Less")
It's amazing how the line "the bigger the lie, the more they believe" set the whole theme for this season. Brilliant.
TheBeatlepacoProject everybody knows yet everybody continues to believe
Especially in POLITICS
More like the rest of the decade.
I have a huge lie for you, Trump won the 2020 election. That is such a big lie I guarantee you somebody might actually believe it because people are that stupid. Even though we faces proving no fraud, people are just that stupid.
I was just going to say the exact same thing. A perfect example of how the real world works.
"We're ready professor?" LMAO
it always gets me. LOL
"Machine tells the tale...."
"The machine tells the tale, son."
Fabisch Factor yea it prints out the tale
"Are we ready, Professor?" Kills me everytime, ESP since it's Landsmann!!
Man Landsman's face at 2:53 kills me! That guy was one of the most underrated characters on the show. Probably one of the absolute funniest.
***** He was great. Definitely my favorite character.
markwest1987 Fun fact: google Jay Landsman. It’s both the name of the professor here and the actual name of the actor who plays Major Colvin’s main man in season 3
Lol dude had more porno mags than the pervy sage
I saw David Simon in late night talking about how the actor who played Landsman just was naturally funny. They would give him lines that necessarily weren’t jokes and hed make them work. It’s why he’s not on a lot, if they over used him he wouldn’t be funny anymore
Every scene he was in was gold. He was hilarious
This scene is so funny! To see him walk past with a mouth full of fries "Donnell WHAT THE FUCK?!?"
Tina Tally I CRY laughing EVERY TIME I watch this shit. And I've seen it at LEAST a THOUSAND TIMES. Bwahahahahahahahahaha!!!
The writer is smart to have created this scenebut its actually a sad scene but thats how it goes. Because we as young black men be out there breaking laws but we dont know how to prepiar to defend our selves now if he was smart enough he would not say anything with out representation.and that what they did was against the law. But we dont anything as young black men.
One of the best "what the fucks" I've ever seen.
Natalie Davenport Teeger Haha, salty American.
@@jshannon777 prepair? Yeah you proved your point right there.
Landsman is priceless.
"The machine tells the tale son".
I love how much Landsman gets into the whole charade.
"Mcdonald Land cookies.." I wonder how many takes there were on this scene. I would have died everytime Bunk said that. LMAO
Rich Weigel
I fall out at “big fries”.
The way he says doctor pepper makes me laugh my ass off
Rich Weigel I wonder what franchise those McDonald’s belong to, because the ones where I live haven’t had McDonaldland cookies in decades.
@@Fakename70 fr 😂😂😂
Its funny because bunk looks like Grimace.
Even the kids on this show are amazing actors.
Great scripts and directions make great actors
"Two quarter pounders, big fries, McDonaldland cookies. Doctor pepper!"
That’s how your boy rolls
@@robertknorr5571 Shieeeeeeet
That Dr. Pepper sealed the deal
The Corner Boy Combo...
i think it's more depressing that he thought they had a machine that prints "false" when you lie
@Eric Johnson This is probably the dumbest saying I've ever read lol
@Eric Johnson Yeah nah. I don't care how hood you are, if you can't tell the difference between a god damn copying machine and a lie detector, you dumb as fuck.
We have to train our children better to not be token bt that okey doke shh smh
The worst part is that its based on a true story. The Detroit police department did this exact thing multiple times in the 1980s to great effect, which is where David Simon got the idea
@@seymourskagnetty6498 yeah but then you have to think about what the world looked like back then. How many had seen a Lie detectors back then?
Oh shit I just now realize that the last line represents the entirety of Season 5 with the homeless case
Using a dam copier/scanner as a lie detector... loooool
"The machine is never wrong son,"
"Really tubs? I want a lawyer"
Based on a true story from a detective!
I love how Ed Norris, playing Detective Ed Norris, was the real Baltimore PD commissioner before he switched to acting.
He was a crook before he switched to radio and acting
Read his book, I think you’ll find the term “crook” a bit excessive.
As funny as this scene is, it really reinforces what Randy says to Bunk at the end of the season!
"Thats what you do... You lie to dumb ass niggas"
The writing on this show is just pure brilliance!!!
I love how Jay is all into it.
+das it mane You mean "Professor" Jay.
That’s Professor Landsman to you!
"Dr. Pepper"! "That's How Ya Boy Role."......LMAOOOOO!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A fucking xerox machine. Genius!
The way he described the McDonald’s actually made me a bit hungry ain’t even going lie
Took me like 6 times watching The Wire before realizing that last quote foreshadows McNulty's bullshit serial killer.
Xeroxing was once a valid tactic to get murder confessions out of suspects.
+woodwyrm "this must be one of them contrapment thing" Bodie
The guy who played DeShawn did a awesome job, you can see how distraught he looks right from the beginning.
Thank you that was me
@@dantepainter8330 dang. The show ended on March 9, 2008, so that was 14 years ago. Does it feel like a long time since you shot this scene??
1:20 lmfao the way he eats the fries,
I loved this scene so much and only now noticed they taped his hands to the copier with just regular duct tape
"Are we ready professor?" is my favorite art of all this. Them calling Landsman a professor is the cherry on top of how they go about manipulating this gullible as shit kid.
''Americans are a pretty stupid people by and large. We pretty much believe whatever we're told.''
This line.. it feels like David Simon speaking directly through the character. It always stood out to me how on-the-nose and out of place it is in this scene... it's unlikely that in that situation the detective would have chosen to generalize the American people, as opposed to corner hoppers, or any other subset of people that could've fit the bill. There's a few jabs here and there that are like this during the series, but this one REALLY stands out and pierces the screen. I think they knew that and left it in anyways.
I get that this was paired with the end line ''The bigger the lie, the more they believe.'', but that one is an example of Simon's commentary meshing seamlessly with story frame, while the first one really isn't. It's almost like ''Do you get it now you stupid bastards?''. No show ever came close to this one.
Mr. Thorax I feel exactly the same way. Even the delivery is out of place despite the rest of that character's parts being pretty convincing.
i think Simon was pretty direct, he said people are damning down in many CZcams videos, but people know anyway
Mr. Thorax You painted that picture, perfectly. Thank you.
Exactly correct....that was a 4th wall directed delivery of rhetoric ....but yet, true rhetoric.
Covid: the bigger the lie...
Monnell, the guy eating McDonald's, paid Randy $5 to be look out while him and some other kid ran a train on a girl in School bathroom. When they all got in trouble, Randy ended up snitching on him.
Word that's the same kid? I think he was in the troubled kids class season 4 too! I never knew that crazy the lil shit u pick up even though I seen the show 100 times #bestever
And the other dude is one of the dudes that jumped Randy outside of the school when Michael helped him.
Holy shit!!
Every time I think I know everything about this show something like that comes to light.
Randy snitching set off the whole story for the rest of that season and the rest of his life… little Kevin getting took because of it, Randy house getting burned down, bodie getting arrested out of anger because of little Kevin, then getting picked up by mcnulty and seen by monk, then getting killed by Michael. Crazy. It’s all connected.
This scene was Fuckin amazing to shoot 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Its brazy how lost they were to not even realize you're in front on a printer.. They probably got hella ppl wit this lie before, ish messed up
"We ready, professor?"
1:04 he thinkin "shit, Marnell DO roll like that"
"Dr. Pepper!" ---- The Way Bunk Says That Is So Fucking Hilarious!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
2 quarter pounders, big fries, McDonald land cookies,Dr pepper, that's how your boy like to role right
And absolute all time classic scene/ series
Pure gold. Got to watch this one more time, one of the best series of all time.
It's so hard to choose but this is my favorite clip from The Wire....
0:34 "Oohh yeah" The Bunk, man i love the look he gaves
i keep coming back to this just for the look on landsmans face @2:54 LOL
He is one of the kids that jumped Randy outside of the school when Michael helped him.
You right
The duct tape 😆😆😭🤣 I'm dead
"The bigger the lie, the more they believe."
That sets the theme for this entire season. Seriously, think about it.
One of the focuses is the Baltimore Sun and media reporting. The reporter, Scott Templeton, frequently falsifies quotes to make his stories seem better, but as the season progresses, the lies start to get bigger and bigger. Once his stories begin to gain traction, he pretty much stops at nothing to gain coverage. But as his lies grow bigger, so does his popularity at the Sun and even in the outside world - he's invited to a national talk show, and even ends up winning a Pulitzer at the end. But it was based almost entirely on bullshit.
And then, you have the police angle with McNulty. McNulty literally creates a serial killer by manipulating bodies and evidence for the purpose of screwing the department and the city, and to get more funding for the department in general. At the beginning, everyone ignored his serial killer angle. But as he spread the bullshit through the press and got more elaborate in the manipulation with Lester, all eyes focused on him and the Homicide unit. As the lie got bigger, everyone believed it more, and they eventually got what they wanted - overtime, new patrol cars, etc.
Nick L. But as Jimmy McNulty has said, he knows why he did what he did, and that was to get Marlo Stanfield behind bars, whereas in Scott Templeton lied just for a damn medal.
I think it's a paraphrase lifted from Mein Kampf, oddly enough.
The best part is THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED IRL.
38Gaucho What?
Malachi Coleman Yeah David Simon has said this technique was used on unsuspecting criminals.
I can see that. Take someone from a poor neighborhood whose never been around or had need for a professional copy machine how are they supposed to know what it is or looks like? But it’s not to say they are dumb though, it’s more about exposure. When it comes to the streets they are quick and fast to learn about the rules since one mistake out there can mean your life.
I would say that's the absolute WORST part
the bigger the lie, the more they believe
Yeah, I watched the video too.
Yeah bunk said that
would have been hella funny if the paper said "LYING MOTHA FUCKA"
A fucking copying machine, LOL
Bunk's "Mmm mm mm" at 3:00 is priceless.
I've seen the "copy machine lie detector" scam on at least three different cop shows. I can't help but wonder what basis in truth it might have..,.
In Dave Simon book he wrote Detroit police did something like that and that were disciplined
Best show ever
The machine is never wrong son
I love how journalism is the central theme of the fifth season and the start of this scene looks like an interview for a newspaper or a documentary but nope, this is still a police station and they're doing what they've always done
Bunk is my favourite cop on the show.
This is one of the best fucking scenes of any tv show of all time.
First, the season, which is about crime journalism, opens up with a sequence that seems Bunk is being interviewed by some reporter, but in fact he's scaring the shit out of some idiot that killed someone in an alley
Then the cops take advantage of the criminal's ignorance in order to get a confession, representing how degenerated is the situation of modern law enforcement agencies in deprived towns
"The bigger the lie, the more they believe": That line summarizes the entire season
they should try this on Omar or bodie
nice i remember them doing that same trick on homicide; life on the streets
DR. PEPPER!
Them fries looked good as fuck 😂
I cant even look at copy machine again.. ever! LOL
I love the look Landsman gives him at 2:56
Loved the duct tape for lie detecting machine.
Makin it through 2020 on The Wire ayyyeee.
We ready, Professor? xD
That's my bro dontae 🔥🔥
"are we ready professor ?" lol
I love that this was taken from a real story that Simon describes in his book Homicide hahaha
i feel bad for laughing at this because i know for sure that cops take advantage of kids like this but damn that was funny as hell
A Xerox machine? Lmfao why don't I remember this? Time to watch again.
I fucking love The Wire
I wonder what they would’ve done if he didn’t see his friend walking pass the door
Walked him back and forth till he did lol
Heh, how they duct taped his hand to the photo copier to use it as a lie detector. Hilarious.
Imagine how mad that kid would be when he tells the story in jail and the whole cell block starts laughing at him
Love when Bunk says “Dr Pepper!”
Are we ready, Professor? LOL.
Does anyone else hear Bunks voice saying Dr Pepper when they see Dr Pepper
Professor Landsman lmao. This show is comedy gold.
Damn right bunk these veep status
When will people learn about Prisoner's Dilemma? Damn.
Docta Peppah... thats how your boy roll right?
2 quater pounder big fries McDonald land cookies ..Dr pepper...lol
The one thing i never liked about the show .. Is when they say "..is all" That ain't Baltimore, thats Mayberry.
When we shot this scene I never said is all because I didn’t think it would sound authentic come from Baltimore….but that’s the shot they chose lol I feel the same way tho
They ain’t shit for this!!! Using a copier as a lie detector test!!! Freaking hilarious 😂
Sheeeeeeiiitt, Jay Landsman acting like he's a professor...all innocent face! Lmfao
Best "WTF" ever.
Thank you
"Lie... lying mothafucka." Gangsta how that Latino being saying that!
Two quarter pounders is crazy
WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THE GARDEN
Boy I miss the Bunk
Because it's nothing like entrapment. At all. Entrapment is when the police convince someone to commit a crime they would otherwise not do or had any intention of doing before hand.
It wasn't cancelled. It ended.
how is that not entrapment?
was thinking about this lol
had to watch it again
Notice that he at least got some McDonald's beverage in his hand though.
The actually did this in the 1980's Baltimore Police Department, but that was when technology and the people who lived in the ghetto were very separated. Now everyone has a cell phone and computer. I just don't know if this technique would still work.
When I saw the printer.. I lost my shit...🤣
The actor playing Bunk had his father's house destroyed by Kathrina in New Orleans. Check him in an awesome documental "When the Levees Broke" by Spike Lee, he seems to be such a nice dude and the insurance companies that dealt with his problem were such criminal assholes...
McDonald Land cookies and DR Pepper...now I’m hungry ...
If no Miranda warning was given to the suspect, then the interrogation and confession would be excluded from the later criminal trial.
You ready professor?
Seriously I could really own right now with facts but all I'll say is look at all the major studies done in the past 15 years in regards to educational rankings amongst countries. You'll find that in the majority of that time when it comes to all major subjects, that includes, math, science, technology, language arts, etc... the United States rarely ranks in the top 20 let alone the top 10 in any of them. We are amongst the least innovative 1st world countries in the world right now.
the TRUE FALSE test is a goddamn classic! :D also can be seen in homicide: life on the street, wire's big sister show!
