The funny part about that is that he wasn't entirely wrong to say so. Belgium was basically created solely to be a buffer between France and the Netherlands, by taking some land of two different peoples, the Flemmish and the Walloons (the rest of their lands being held by the French and Dutch respectively), and combining them together.

@@z3r0_35 Not at all, the United Netherlands was created for that reason, but the Belgians didn't like some things about the dutch (f.e. dutch were protestant, Belgians Catholics) so they decided to break free. The English really liked that because during the industrial revolution Wallonia was the only region that could rival the British industry, so the British figured that by helping Belgium split off they would become weaker and less of a rival.
Well that'd be quite ironic since the French themselves sent an army to help the belgian revolution
