Fuck it, I had fun playing this. Parts of it were pretty unpolished, but it was still fun. A fun letdown.
With all the potty humor they used I'm completely shocked they didn't play with the poo.

Confession time: I really liked this game.
I love so many great games across all genres from RTS games to platformers, but I still somehow enjoyed beating this game 3 times and level capping in the multiplayer... I have no clue why I liked this game, and I only found out about the horrid reviews two weeks after I beat it... Did anybody else inexplicably love this game?
Of course, dude. It was- it's- what the fuck IS the Duke Nukem Experience, if not a brain-destroying hormonal slurry of dumb manly tropes headbutting each other? The game is exactly what I would expect it to be, and the review response confused me too. Yes, the combat is one-dimensional and there are are silly glitches and limited animation. But - Jesus, who queues up "The Expendables" looking for seamless SFX and incisive dialogue? No. You are there for conceptual lunacy, not technical perfection. Me and you against the world, buddy.

Javer80 Absolutely. But the reason why the reviews for DNF were so bad were just because it was SO heavily hyped and took twelve years to make. It's a badass game. A badass, gory, manly, dumb game. But for a game that took twelve years to make... The world just expected more.
Zack HowDoesBucket this game was hyped beyond any game should have been. If orcarina of time was held to the sane expectations that this game was, critics in 96 would have picked it apart. Of course OOT is a masterpiece, but hype can hurt a game no matter how good it is.
I love this game. I understand it is very terrible but I can't help but love it for that duke nukem charm. I just wish they stuck to his style of play from the origional games, health bar, more than 2 guns and the like.

it's always been like this. and honestly I'm okay with it. the cheesy bullshit that is dukes dialogue fits the God character 3D realms created. I grew up with this series and when I got this version of dnf by gearbox I wanted to vomit. fuck you gearbox.
I didn't think Duke Nukem Forever was that bad, but then again I LITERALLY did not expect ANYTHING from this game. I honestly gave up on it EVER coming out years ago, and then suddenly it was a physical game. I was happy to have spent $60 and have gotten an actual video game for my money, instead of a Duke Nukem-style Rick Roll video with Pig Cop on guitar...

People just wants it to be the same but actual, and Duke Nukem is a product of the 90's, now its outdated on his humor and the intent of making it modern went wrong. It's not such a bad game as everyone says, just came too late and the hype of 12 years made it worse.

This game was not nearly as bad as non classic duke fans say it is. I wanted a Duke Nukem experience, and this game gave me that. Which was enough for me.

Plenty of fans, including myself, knew that this was a pieced together game that was in development in its current state for less than 2 years. For that, the game is fine. If you dove into it at full price expecting something mind blowing, you are the one that lacks competence.
He's entirely right. Duke Nukem was awesome. And this game didnt get enough credit. I stopped listening to game reviews because generally they are completely wrong today. Like with Thief, i thought it was a phenominal game but everyone was ripping on it. They stuck to the original thief gameplay and if they were to change it then it would just be another assassins creed game IMO. People complained about shit they shouldnt have.
I usually dont get mad about game grumps but theyre complaining about this game like its commited crazy sins. Regenerating health? Invisible walls in areas clearly blocked off? Not being able to punch your allies to death? What the fuck did they expect?
The regenerating health is a legitimate complaint...they have every right to complain.
Regenerating health is an excuse for developers to not have to balance enemy/cover placement. With regenerating health they can get away with crappy design.

Sorry guys, gonna have to disagree with you on this game.
I still like it. It's one of the only shooters I'll pick up and play nowadays because I like it's sense of humor. And if you're playing it on Steam you can actually tweak the settings to where you can carry 4 weapons.

***** Probably not, but it pretty much solidified the fact that Duke is no longer the king he used to be. Though I've never played any of the Nukem games, I have heard many things about Forever and how it was going to be extremely different to what we got. You'd think 12 years would be plenty of time to perfect the game into something that would put Duke back on the map.
Instead, we got a game that let us throw poop at people as if Duke was a chimpanzee...

First off. I'd like the people saying it's awful and terrible to make a better game. Otherwise, shut the fuck up.
If there is anything anyone can complain about is that it was a HUGE letdown. Had it been released in the early 2000s when DN was still somewhat relevant and games hadn't advanced as much as they have, it would have been the tits, but that wasn't the case.
While it's not the greatest game ever, it's not as bad as most of you complainers make it out to be. Hell, even calling it good is questionable but they actually released another DN game and that was good enough for me. I enjoyed it. It made a stupid grin form on my face and it didn't go away until I realized I was about to beat it. Then I was bummed that it was so short.
I'm still waiting for someone to recreate the game using DN3D Steam Workshop.

Yes Arin, it's totally not tongue in cheek. It would've been much better if they made a flawless, super badass animation with sillouette strippers and Duke literally ripping off a monster's head and shitting down his neck. Duke should totally have a super cool, ultra serious intro to match the tone of the rich storytelling and important message.

This sudden outburst of criticism of Game Grumps by the fans of Duke Nukem is annoying. At least most people who get angry at them don't pretend that their POS games are some sort of art-house feature. It's even more cringe-y when they comment on every single DNF video on the channel, spouting the same thinly-veiled indignation over and over.
I feel like having Ross and Arin team up for anything is just like having two neanderthals beat each other over the head with rocks to make fire.

Arin originally was on Steam Train because Dan was very busy;
Why else would they keep Danny in the intro if he wasn't a co-host;
Dan and Ross were holding the Steam Train Q&A panel at MAGFest;

I think a major reason why people hate this game so much is that we sorta realized that the older Duke Nukem games didn't really have anything going for them besides fantastic level design and fun gameplay. Once that all went away, folks realized that the game is atrociously unfunny and obnoxious. It was easy to ignore the merciless murder of our brain cells when the game was fun to play, but once it was no longer enjoyable at all, it just left this super sour taste in everyone's mouth.

Hey, all of that sounds like Bioshock Infinite too. I mean it was worse in that one with all the barebones shooting and overly linear setpieces. I am not saying this game is incredible, but "gamers" standards and judgments are so fucking arbitrary nowadays, shitty games get crowned as the best everm and average games get some rather intense hatred for very stupid reasons.

I don't think making hardcore fans wait over a decade for a mediocre shooter (at best) is a stupid reason for it to be hated. Gearbox should've thrown out the entire thing and started from the ground up instead of tarnishing their name with this. There have been worse shooters for sure, but this had constant hype slathered over it for years.

I hate it when they decide that a game is bad and then go on to make fun of everything supposedly wrong with the game without really experiencing it for themselves... They did the same thing with the Ride to Hell, I mean, yeah it's one of the worst games of all time, everyone can agree on that but still... and Duke Nukem is good besides. yeah, I said it GOOD. It's nothing amazing and there are MANY MANY FPS games better than this, but it's still fun.
Duke Nukem has always been terrible and there's no problem with them going into this game expecting it to be bad.
Fabio254 Duke Nukem 3D was a really good game. Intentionally goofy as hell, but really well designed and super fun. This game is just kind of awkward and bland.

I've noticed this with most 'critics' (I know it's a stretch to call the grumps "critics"). They form an opinion before going in and then try to pick out everything that justifies it.
Nathan Dehnel I don't know about critics, but I've definitely observed the Grumps doing that even before Ross/Danny joined.
I have played and beaten this game, and I paid full goddamn price for it, and I... think it's a really bad game and do not think the hype is overblown whatsoever. I hated playing this game the entire time I did (and I only beat it because, again, paid full price for it), from the tired writing to the mess of mixed gameplay to the first-person platforming (oh GOD the first-person platforming).
I don't really super-blame the game, because I actually kind of expect a game that gets stuck in development hell for over a decade to be like this, an amorphous blob of styles all smushed together, where it throws in all these tropes from the past decade of FPSes in both the gameplay and writing, and it doesn't really do any of them well.
If you liked this game, that's fine, everyone has different tastes and acceptances, but I really, really did not like this game at all, and if someone else says they hate it, too, then don't just discredit them because you think the "hype is overblown".
Also for the record I did grow up on 90s FPSs like Wolfenstein and, yes, Duke Nukem 3D, and no my hatred has nothing really to do with the one-liners or over-the-top sexuality (I think it's dumb and pandering but I mean it's Duke Nukem so duh of course that's there).
Please go all the way with this one. DNF is one of man's greatest achievements.

I'd heard this game was a bomb back when it came out, but I didn't really pay attention because who the fuck cares about duke nukem. But after actually seeing it, I don't really know what people were expecting from this game, it's duke nukem, you shoot shit, they make bad jokes. Was anyone really expecting anything more than that going in? Were you really expecting more than another shootem up?
The problem is that it's a bad shooter. As in "the gameplay is pretty shitty".
The stuff Arin keeps bitching about is no problem for most people, I'd assume. They haven't even seen truly bad parts of this game yet (which annoys me, that fake "oh this is so bad" stuff)
Ryowyn Definitely agreed. The issue I had with the game was that for something supposedly about macho aggrandizing, none of the guns were REMOTELY satisfying to shoot. Look at that weapon they're using! It's a friggin' double-barreled rapid-fire missile launcher! Why does it feel like it's firing streamers or toilet paper?!

It's clearly _supposed_ to be tongue in cheek. But I think the point they're making is, the tongue-in-cheek-ness isn't used effectively. That is, it's not cute or funny.

If your interpretation wasn't faulty based on delusion, then I guess that that just means that you don't understand what a "rationalization" means (it's a word used in the video itself to describe the people that think that the game is tongue in cheek). It's a psychology 101 thing where a person tries to explain negative events in a way that is not grounded on reality, but rather wishful thinking, making the event less emotionally distressing.

If you have played any of the Duke games from the past you'd understand the type of atmosphere and attitude the game has. It's suppose to be dumb as hell and immature. That's what makes it Duke. But Forever killed it completely.
