I moved out from "down South" 4 years ago and found your videos after we moved here. Apparently, we made every mistake. Moved out about 2 miles past Clark Fork towards Montana. Bought an off grid log house with a million dollar view. We had some major repairs to do, to figure out winter on the side of a mountain. Were 45 minutes from Sandpoint, but enjoy the lake which is about 5 miles away. Out here its not crowded, but a beautiful drive away and were in Hope, Ponderay and Sandpoint. Oh, and we have 20 acres of hillside.

We visited Sand Point last two summers. We were surprised how much traffic there was in the area. Plan on moving out of Washington State too many Leftist loons here.
Sandpoint IMO is mostly leftest loons from California and other blue states. Locally many people feel the Californians are taking over the town which is one reason why the cost of living is so high in Sandpoint. McCall Idaho which locals call "little California" is a small town that was taken over by Californians and few local Idaho people live there anymore. They were pushed out by the high taxes and liberal politics. Sandpoint is not far from being the next McCall.
My wife moved me here to Sandpoint 6 years ago. Sadly she passed away 6 months after moving here. The community gathered around my 6 year old daughter at the time and we really felt God's grace. So we stayed and this has been the best place to raise her. Just wished I moved here 20 or 30 years ago, when housing was affordable. Yes we do get comedy shows here.
I am sorry about your wife. I was raised by a single Middle Eastern father and I know it is hard to raise a child alone, especially for a man. Men don’t get the same support as a single mother does. My husband died 2 1/2 years ago. I live in Coeur d’Alene and the kindness I have seen from neighbors, Candlelight Church and everybody around me here since his death (and before too) has been amazing. I moved here from Los Angeles 20 years ago. It was one of the best decisions my late husband and I ever made. I will NEVER move out of here. God bless.
How do you feel about the public school system? I personally hate it. I kept my son out of it until 5th grade. He attended Sagle Elementary for 5th and 6th grade and then went to the Sandpoint Middle school where mid 8th grade I pulled him due to being bullied and some kid threatened to shoot and kill him. The school did nothing, in fact they laughed and said "boys will be boys". High school was a disaster where he got into drinking alcohol and doing drugs. He ended up going to school in Lewiston for his senior year where he graduated this year. If I could turn back time, he would have never went to the public schools in this town.

I worked for the LAPD and part of my job was speaking to Spanish speaking parents for officers who only spoke English. All I dealt with was crime in the public schools. I could tell you stories about what crimes are committed in LA public schools that would curl your hair. We would tell parent to NEVER report a crime committed against their child to the school, but go straight to the police. The schools would cover up and destroy evidence and transfer the criminal. I have the feeling that almost all public schools operate that way. There were rapes, stabbings, beatings by multiple kids against one person and other such horrors in those public schools. I went to LA schools the entire time and swore that no child of mine would be sentenced to that fate. White and Asian students had no rights at all and were constantly victimized and the schools allowed it. That is not an issue here, but there probably is unequal treatment . Public “education” is a lost cause and a failed concept.
I've lived in Sandpoint for almost my entire life. As a young adult trying to spread my wings, which is nearly impossible up here, I can whole heartedly agree with pretty much all the points in this video. The housing up here is absolutely nuts, and as a Schweitzer employee, even employee housing there is relatively expensive. A ton of young adults are trapped living with their parents up here, because it's just too hard to get any money too move out, because like you said, there's not a lot of jobs that pay good up here and over the top expensive housing. So unless you're ok with living with eight other people, you're going to be paying an arm, leg and a virgins soul just for a cardboard box. With that, there's just not really great jobs to work that pay high money, and any good ones are already filled because they pay good, or it requires experience that young people simply don't have because they're fresh outta high school. Adding on top of that, my few years of experience with NIC, North Idaho College, the closest college too Sandpoint, was absolute dog water. I've heard that their in person classes are better but not by a lot. NIC almost lost their accreditation and for good reason, their teachers are lazy and rely on online programs to teach instead of doing their job and it's really expensive, but that's just college. I only had two good teachers, after three years of doing college with them. I can't speak for Sandpoint high as I never took any high school classes there, but it's a mixed bag from the students as I knew a few who went there. When it comes to entertainment, yes there's only outside things to do. If you ski, snowboard and enjoy hiking like I do, it's a pretty good place to live. In the summertime there's a lot of festivals that go on, like Lost in the 50's, of course 4th of July, and then the annual Sandpoint Music Festival. So there's a few things that go on but in the winter it's dead. If you don't ski there's absolutely nothing to do in the winter time. The only thing that has kept my developing SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) at bay has been working on the mountain and being able to go ski and snowboard. But the winters last most of the year, then of course you have mud season where it's just cold and icy with no snow. Speaking of the ice, it's funny that this place is a retirement town because you gotta watch grandma closely because I don't know ONE old person that has not broken a hip living up here because there's so much thaw and freeze and down as Sandpoints level that it's a guaranteed your driveway WILL become and ice skating rink. This also might just be a me thing, but I find it hard to make friends up here, so your "dying alone" joke at the beginning hit a bit close to home. There's not a lot of creatives up here in my age group. Everyone up here only has a few interests and that is; hiking, fishing, cars, hunting and camping. And out of those I only really enjoy hiking, so I find it can be really hard to find people with similar interests to me. I find the social scene pretty dead up here for teens (as I grew up here as a teen), down town is mostly bars so you have a lot of bored teens up here chomping at the bit to get out of this town because a lot of the social life isn't built for them, ESPECIALLY in winter time. I'm not saying Sandpoint is a bad place to live, I do wanna get out of here for a little bit and then come back, or one day when I'm maybe rich, have a house here or apartment. But it's a GREAT retirement town for certain seasons. But it definitely has its flaws. The crime here is very low, but there have been a couple times I've been put in direct danger (being chased down by men or a 🔫pointed at my car at night at a stop sign.). But it's very few and far between and I know plenty of people that have never had bad experiences here. But still, ladies, carry pepper spray or other defensive measures with you. Overall I do love this place as I have grown up here, but it DEFINITELY has its flaws, and all the youth here can agree with that.
Moved there in 2020 from Southern Idaho. Very cute town but i barely lasted 3 years. We were warned that we had better love winter sports to survive winter. We were used to snow but not that level of gray, icy gloom for months. Summer is gorgeous

People were honest, respectful, and always lending a helping hand to anyone they could. That’s what we really appreciated about Idaho. Unfortunately that no longer exist at least in the towns we were familiar with. Once Gods country destroyed by greed.
Oh my goodness. We were just discussing this. We are travel nurses who have traveled to a small town in Idaho to work several times since 2018. The once extremely pleasant community has become quite aggressive and unpleasant. What a change.

I agree - I lived in Priest River for two years and three years in CDA. CDA has the crab syndrome. Everyone is climbing over each other to get to the top.
This was a fair assessment of our little town! The only thing I'd like to say (as someone who works in our school system) is that the quality of our public education has little to do with the education itself and more to do with state funding. Idaho ranks either 49th or 50th in the nation for per student spending. Our community does an amazing job of supporting students, both through the levy as well as organizations like PAFE, Angels Over Sandpoint, Rotary, etc. You made it sound pretty dismal and while there's always room for improvement, money and access to resources is the biggest issue. Our educators are high quality!
I agree. No matter where we are ranked in the country…Sandpoint education is amazing. I just graduated our youngest (of a combined family of 8) and was really surprised how much more prepared our kids were at college orientation than all the other kids and families.
Can confirm. Sandpoint is and IMO has always been the absolutely best part of N. ID. Also, our local politics aren’t nearly as aggressive and nasty as Coeur d’Alene’s seem to be these days. A lot of the recent transplants in Kootenai seem so very angry all the time and can’t let go of their emotions :(
Another Washington resident who watches your channel. No one has a central Idaho you tube though. I did watch your Lewistown video, then I drove there. I can see myself living there. This weather this week has let me know she'll get hot over there. But that is what AC is for. I'm good with teens to 85° weather. Snow has never been an issue with me. The pulp mill in Lewiston sends a horrible stink all over the town, depending of what way the wind is blowing. There's no escaping it entirely, but knowing the prevailing winds can help keep the stench to a minimum most of the time. I like Lewiston also, it's very pretty being right on the river, but the stink is a deal-breaker for me. Suggest you check out Moscow...

People moving in from wealthier places like Washington are ruining Idaho for the locals. What counts as conservative in western WA is not necessarily the same as what it means here.
I am 32 and I have lived in Sandpoint 90% of my life. I am disabled, though, so i dont know too much about the big jobs and whatnot. I will say you probably should have a love of snow if you want to live here. Also, traffic can be kind of bonkers for a smaller town. If you're a bike rider, great news! There is bike paths ALLLL over the place here. You can basically ride anywhere. We have a really nice library, amazing beaches, some hiking trails, a farmer's market full of local goods on Wednesdays and Saturdays from i think May - September. A little county fair in August, The Festival in mid to late summer, which is a music festival lasting a week long, all sorts of artist come! When i was a kid I saw Air Supply, about 8-9 years ago I saw Sublime, this year I think Jason Mraz is coming, country artists come, folk artists, all kinds. A little kids festival on the last day. Also, if you're low income and need an apartment, there are some, just might have to be on a waiting list. Overall, i love this town. Maybe I'm biased, though, since I grew up here.
I own my own home and a friend of mine just moved to my area and is renting. I just about tipped over when he told me his 2200 sqft home is costing him 2800 a month! This is in the puget sound area of WA . State
I own a rental management company in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Rents definitely are going up, but there are many factors most people don’t know about. Insurance for the rental properties have gone up 100% in just this last year. Property taxes have gone up too. The cost of maintenance has more than doubled now also. Building material prices and the cost of labor for repairs and maintenance have gone insane. A roofer who quoted me a labor cost of $17k before the work started, raised that price to $35 when it came time to start the job. Then with all the other prices raising, the salaries of my employees have to be raised too. All these price hikes get factored in to the cost of the rent. When the landlord’s expenses go up, so does the rent.
As one who has lived in or associated with Sandpoint all of my life, you're right on with everything you said. I might add few details. 1) Jobs. Don't forget that if you work remotely, and thus don't have to rely on the local job market, Sandpoint is a great place to live. 2) Trains. Point out that Sandpoint is a confluence of three separate railroads. So, 60 trains a day doesn't mean that all of them pass through on the same set of tracks. But you do hear all of them regardless of what tracks they run on. 3) Snow. Sandpoint does a good job of plowing the streets in the winter. They have a method for systematically plowing that clears the streets within a day or so of a storm. But you do still have to drive on potentially slick streets, so please use traction devices and, if you're not used to it, practice controlling your car in an empty parking lot. 🙂
Wife and I thought about SP. She did a 13 week contract at the hospital while we checked out the area. Meh,. Too much of a resort town, crazy busy congestion, summer crowds, and realestate is nuts. Nice place to visit.
I love your vids! we've been off grid up between PR and the lake for 15 years and love living up her! Unfortunately the cost of living is driving many out. I saw something the other day: "It isn't paradise if the locals cant afford to live here", and that seems to be the norm sadly.... The property values here are skyrocketing to the point that we are considering selling, because our 20 acres and a couple houses here are worth 200 acres and a couple houses in the midwest.... looking for the next inexpensive Americana! It isn't Idaho...
Not that long ago I was looking at a nice home right on the water in Bottle Bay with private boat house and docks for under $600K. Kinda looks like Democrats are starting to infest Sandpoint, a once great town. $45K average income with average house cost $750K? Yup, "THEY'RE HERE". A exact repeat of what happened to Colorado.

I’m confused at your opinion on school and education. Might want to dig deeper on that one when it comes to Sandpoint. Talk to some teachers. School advisors. School board trustees. Alumni who went on to college. Alumni who went on to trades. Etc. Ours are stellar.
I left Sandpoint Idaho in 1993 because i could not find a job. Mind you that was before the internet days. The only way you could make it is if you had a trade license or friends or family business. Now days it is better but too late for me since i moved to Coeur d Alene in 1993 and still living there. The only reason i live in Coeur d alene is because in 1999 i bought a house. If i did not do that i probably would of moved because housing here is way too much.
10k people! Wow! I will say this I WILL NEVER EVER LIVE IN THE CITY! I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, I don’t even recognize the Colorado I grew up in. We moved to the PNW & found a beautiful home in rural WA state, we’ve been here about 30 years. The Pacific Northwest has been good to us, I feel love with the SEASONS when I moved here! Fall especially, the beautiful colors & unique climates - mountains. The evergreen coastline, urban areas that are almost like a rain forest climate & once you drive over the mountain range it’s almost a desert landscape- there is nothing like it! Up until Jay Inslee became governor the politics were so unique- you could be pro-choice & pro 2A & NO ONE CARED! I remember going to Seattle & taking my family from Denver there too & EVERYONE commented how beautiful & CLEAN Seattle was! Same with Portland, no trash, drinking fountains in the city & at the state parks bathrooms were clean, some had showers! My friends who came to visit were ALWAYS IMPRESSED - and no matter what we always met different people-who were kind, interesting & who taught us NEW THINGS ABOUT THE PNW! That NEVER HAPPENS NOW! Seattle is crime infested, Portland too! My family & friends HAVE BEEN HERE IN YEARS! Now we are waiting on this election- if Ferguson is elected we are out, because he will be the nail in WA coffin & if WA voters can’t get it together to make changes there is no hope! Don’t worry Idaho, we won’t go where we aren’t wanted. We have family in Iowa & Florida that own property & farmland so most likely we will go there! God bless!
Just got back from Sandpoint, thanks for sending some neighborhoods for us to check out. My wife and I love it there. We did spend a couple days in CDA as well, and saw the similar neighborhoods your team recommended there. For us, we both prefer Sandpoint much more. We're doing a trip to Boise area later this summer to see some neighborhoods as well. Thanks again and will let you know on Sandpoint, the houses we liked there were more in the 1.5M range though 🙂
I love my place up north. I think it is mostly conservatives from Washington and Oregon that are moving up. Not Not as many Californians as everyone says. For me, it is retirement and I love it.
We are glad we didn’t buy and live in Sandpoint. We went even smaller town life……….. we bought in Hope 1/2 mile from the lake, WE LOVE IT! 14 miles from Sandpoint, close enough, yet far enough away…. My pension(yes, I’m retired)covers the “average salary “ plus, my wife still works. One cool thing about this state they do not have income tax on retirement income. Winter is OK here. We were worried about the snow. A snow blower and all wheel drive vehicles keep us going. Our neighbors watched us for the first couple winters. Guess we passed the test, after five years, we are here.
My hubby has a cousin that just sold her house right above the boat launch in Hope. We have enjoyed many beautiful sunsets from her deck in the past. I was blown away by all the deer in everyone's yard up in Beyond Hope!

In the summertime there's a lot of festivals that go on, like Lost in the 50's, of course 4th of July, and then the annual Sandpoint Music Festival. So there's a few things that go on but in the winter it's dead. If you don't ski there's absolutely nothing to do in the winter time. The only thing that has kept my developing SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) at bay has been working on the mountain and being able to go ski and snowboard. But the winters last most of the year, then of course you have mud season where it's just cold and icy with no snow. Speaking of the ice, it's funny that this place is a retirement town because you gotta watch grandma closely because I don't know ONE old person that has not broken a hip living up here because there's so much thaw and freeze and down as Sandpoints level that it's a guaranteed your driveway WILL become and ice skating rink.
This also might just be a me thing, but I find it hard to make friends up here, so your "dying alone" joke at the beginning hit a bit close to home. There's not a lot of creatives up here in my age group. Everyone up here only has a few interests and that is; hiking, fishing, cars, hunting and camping. And out of those I only really enjoy hiking, so I find it can be really hard to find people with similar interests to me. I find the social scene pretty dead up here for teens (as I grew up here as a teen), down town is mostly bars so you have a lot of bored teens up here chomping at the bit to get out of this town because a lot of the social life isn't built for them, ESPECIALLY in winter time.
I'm not saying Sandpoint is a bad place to live, I do wanna get out of here for a little bit and then come back, or one day when I'm maybe rich, have a house here or apartment. But it's a GREAT retirement town for certain seasons. But it definitely has its flaws. The crime here is very low, but there have been a couple times I've been put in direct danger (being chased down by men or a
🔫pointed at my car at night at a stop sign.). But it's very few and far between and I know plenty of people that have never had bad experiences here. But still, ladies, carry pepper spray or other defensive measures with you. Overall I do love this place as I have grown up here, but it DEFINITELY has its flaws, and all the youth here can agree with that.

Moved there in 2020 from Southern Idaho. Very cute town but i barely lasted 3 years. We were warned that we had better love winter sports to survive winter. We were used to snow but not that level of gray, icy gloom for months. Summer is gorgeous
Moved to Priest River in 2022 from the Seattle area - best decision.....EVER I love it up here. Sandpoint is awesome! Priest Lake is paradise.

Lived in a small town in Idaho for a couple years. Me and my wife went back two years ago after being gone for about 8 years. Still beautiful but the culture really changed. People were honest, respectful, and always lending a helping hand to anyone they could. That’s what we really appreciated about Idaho. Unfortunately that no longer exist at least in the towns we were familiar with. Once Gods country destroyed by greed.

Oh my goodness. We were just discussing this. We are travel nurses who have traveled to a small town in Idaho to work several times since 2018. The once extremely pleasant community has become quite aggressive and unpleasant. What a change.

I agree - I lived in Priest River for two years and three years in CDA. CDA has the crab syndrome. Everyone is climbing over each other to get to the top.
This was a fair assessment of our little town! The only thing I'd like to say (as someone who works in our school system) is that the quality of our public education has little to do with the education itself and more to do with state funding. Idaho ranks either 49th or 50th in the nation for per student spending. Our community does an amazing job of supporting students, both through the levy as well as organizations like PAFE, Angels Over Sandpoint, Rotary, etc. You made it sound pretty dismal and while there's always room for improvement, money and access to resources is the biggest issue. Our educators are high quality!
I agree. No matter where we are ranked in the country…Sandpoint education is amazing. I just graduated our youngest (of a combined family of 8) and was really surprised how much more prepared our kids were at college orientation than all the other kids and families.
You failed to mention if you buy the house and live in it, as your primary residence, your property taxes are discounted almost to half!

Can confirm. Sandpoint is and IMO has always been the absolutely best part of N. ID. Also, our local politics aren’t nearly as aggressive and nasty as Coeur d’Alene’s seem to be these days. A lot of the recent transplants in Kootenai seem so very angry all the time and can’t let go of their emotions :(

This weather this week has let me know she'll get hot over there. But that is what AC is for. I'm good with teens to 85° weather. Snow has never been an issue with me. Grew up in the country in Washington state close to Mt. Rainier
The pulp mill in Lewiston sends a horrible stink all over the town, depending of what way the wind is blowing. There's no escaping it entirely, but knowing the prevailing winds can help keep the stench to a minimum most of the time. I like Lewiston also, it's very pretty being right on the river, but the stink is a deal-breaker for me. Suggest you check out Moscow...

I am 32 and I have lived in Sandpoint 90% of my life. I am disabled, though, so i dont know too much about the big jobs and whatnot. I will say you probably should have a love of snow if you want to live here. Also, traffic can be kind of bonkers for a smaller town. If you're a bike rider, great news! There is bike paths ALLLL over the place here. You can basically ride anywhere. We have a really nice library, amazing beaches, some hiking trails, a farmer's market full of local goods on Wednesdays and Saturdays from i think May - September. A little county fair in August, The Festival in mid to late summer, which is a music festival lasting a week long, all sorts of artist come! When i was a kid I saw Air Supply, about 8-9 years ago I saw Sublime, this year I think Jason Mraz is coming, country artists come, folk artists, all kinds. A little kids festival on the last day.
Also, if you're low income and need an apartment, there are some, just might have to be on a waiting list. Overall, i love this town. Maybe I'm biased, though, since I grew up here.

I own a rental management company in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Rents definitely are going up, but there are many factors most people don’t know about. Insurance for the rental properties have gone up 100% in just this last year. Property taxes have gone up too. The cost of maintenance has more than doubled now also. Building material prices and the cost of labor for repairs and maintenance have gone insane. A roofer who quoted me a labor cost of $17k before the work started, raised that price to $35 when it came time to start the job. Then with all the other prices raising, the salaries of my employees have to be raised too. All these price hikes get factored in to the cost of the rent. When the landlord’s expenses go up, so does the rent.
As one who has lived in or associated with Sandpoint all of my life, you're right on with everything you said. I might add few details. 1) Jobs. Don't forget that if you work remotely, and thus don't have to rely on the local job market, Sandpoint is a great place to live. 2) Trains. Point out that Sandpoint is a confluence of three separate railroads. So, 60 trains a day doesn't mean that all of them pass through on the same set of tracks. But you do hear all of them regardless of what tracks they run on. 3) Snow. Sandpoint does a good job of plowing the streets in the winter. They have a method for systematically plowing that clears the streets within a day or so of a storm. But you do still have to drive on potentially slick streets, so please use traction devices and, if you're not used to it, practice controlling your car in an empty parking lot. 🙂

I love your vids! we've been off grid up between PR and the lake for 15 years and love living up her! Unfortunately the cost of living is driving many out. I saw something the other day: "It isn't paradise if the locals cant afford to live here", and that seems to be the norm sadly.... The property values here are skyrocketing to the point that we are considering selling, because our 20 acres and a couple houses here are worth 200 acres and a couple houses in the midwest.... looking for the next inexpensive Americana! It isn't Idaho...

The one percent property tax in California is only for the state tax. The county adds another quarter to half a percent to that tax bill.
I’m confused at your opinion on school and education. Might want to dig deeper on that one when it comes to Sandpoint. Talk to some teachers. School advisors. School board trustees. Alumni who went on to college. Alumni who went on to trades. Etc. Ours are stellar.
I left Sandpoint Idaho in 1993 because i could not find a job. Mind you that was before the internet days. The only way you could make it is if you had a trade license or friends or family business. Now days it is better but too late for me since i moved to Coeur d Alene in 1993 and still living there. The only reason i live in Coeur d alene is because in 1999 i bought a house. If i did not do that i probably would of moved because housing here is way too much.

I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, I don’t even recognize the Colorado I grew up in.
We moved to the PNW & found a beautiful home in rural WA state, we’ve been here about 30 years. The Pacific Northwest has been good to us, I feel love with the SEASONS when I moved here! Fall especially, the beautiful colors & unique climates - mountains. The evergreen coastline, urban areas that are almost like a rain forest climate & once you drive over the mountain range it’s almost a desert landscape- there is nothing like it! Up until Jay Inslee became governor the politics were so unique- you could be pro-choice & pro 2A & NO ONE CARED! I remember going to Seattle & taking my family from Denver there too & EVERYONE commented how beautiful & CLEAN Seattle was! Same with Portland, no trash, drinking fountains in the city & at the state parks bathrooms were clean, some had showers! My friends who came to visit were ALWAYS IMPRESSED - and no matter what we always met different people-who were kind, interesting & who taught us NEW THINGS ABOUT THE PNW! That NEVER HAPPENS NOW! Seattle is crime infested, Portland too! My family & friends HAVE BEEN HERE IN YEARS!
Now we are waiting on this election- if Ferguson is elected we are out, because he will be the nail in WA coffin & if WA voters can’t get it together to make changes there is no hope! Don’t worry Idaho, we won’t go where we aren’t wanted.

We did spend a couple days in CDA as well, and saw the similar neighborhoods your team recommended there. For us, we both prefer Sandpoint much more. I love my place up north. I think it is mostly conservatives from Washington and Oregon that are moving up. Not Not as many Californians as everyone says. For me, it is retirement and I love it.
We are glad we didn’t buy and live in Sandpoint. We went even smaller town life……….. we bought in Hope 1/2 mile from the lake, WE LOVE IT! 14 miles from Sandpoint, close enough, yet far enough away…. My pension(yes, I’m retired)covers the “average salary “ plus, my wife still works. One cool thing about this state they do not have income tax on retirement income.
Winter is OK here. We were worried about the snow. A snow blower and all wheel drive vehicles keep us going. Our neighbors watched us for the first couple winters. Guess we passed the test, after five years, we are here.
My hubby has a cousin that just sold her house right above the boat launch in Hope. We have enjoyed many beautiful sunsets from her deck in the past. I was blown away by all the deer in everyone's yard up in Beyond Hope!
