भूपेश्वरी राग कोई पारंपरिक राग नहीं है।
यह आम तौर पर स्वीकार किया जाता है कि इसे 1990 और 2000 के दशक के बीच बनाया गया था। इसका निर्माण जयपुर-अतरौली घराने के उस्ताद अल्लादिया खान द्वारा किया गया होगा, हालाँकि यह उनकी मृत्यु के बाद ही सामने आया। इसका श्रेय पं. को भी दिया जाता है। किराना घराने के मणि प्रसाद.
औडव राग महत्वपूर्ण अस्पष्टता की अनुमति देता है। चूँकि शेष स्वर/स्वर अज्ञात हैं, इसलिए इसके मूल राग या पैमाने को निर्धारित करना काफी कठिन है। यह राग भातखंडे के किसी भी थाट में फिट नहीं बैठता। इसे मेलाकार्ता चक्रवम, मेलाकार्ट मारारंजनी, मेलाकार्ता चारुकेसी और मेलाकार्ता सारसंगी से जोड़ा जा सकता है।[1]
'भूपेश्वरी' नाम राग भोपाली से प्रेरणा लेकर आया। हालाँकि, इस राग के पूरे भारत में विभिन्न नाम हैं। पं. प्रसिद्ध बांसुरी वादक हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया राग भूपकली नाम पसंद करते हैं, जबकि जयपुर-अतरौली घराने के अधिकांश संगीतकार राग प्रतीक्षा का उपयोग करते हैं। भूपश्री, भूपश्री आदि अन्य विविधताएँ भी मौजूद हैं। कर्नाटक संगीत में राग को राग वसंती कहा जाता है।
