  • Happy to answer questions in the comments!
    Designed mechanical and electrical parts over the course of a month while interning at Formlabs and built it during the Formlabs 3 day hackathon!
    Spark generator design (Run off a 12s lipo): oshwlab.com/ehdesignlabs/wire...
    CAD for machine: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
    Note: I added a solid wire contactor on the bottom which made all the difference, make sure you don't run current through any ball bearings!

    Nice job. I've done a CNC mill, lathe and laser, but never had the huevos to tackle an EDM.
    Killer.

    Replace the Vegetable Oil with Distilled water.. that's what my Wire EDM uses...

    Amazing work!! You HAVE to do more videos on this. I looked into a homemade edm circuit, but they were all for drilling not wire, and even Ben from applied science disappointingly relied on a commercial spark generator by BaxEDM to make his unit.

    Running current through a bearing will cause metal erosion (pitting) & deposition (whiskers) on the internal raceway & balls/rollers.

    Wish we had like a VESC/Voron open source project on this, so that asian manufacturer's could start selling them at $150 like 3D printers are today.

    Hey man, this video and the work you did is super cool! If you have any wiring diagram or any extra resources on how to maybe replicate what you did I was hoping you could talk more about it or maybe help me out, I’d love to see more of the details of this machine.

    you can add a super capacitor in parallel with the lipo battery, it will help with the current discharge and also the lifespan of the battery

    NIce job mate. If I might make a suggestion about presentation: leave the mouse alone. Move it once to the item you want to point it to then hand off until the next point. Stop moving it all the time3, you make your viewers sea sick.

    The 300 Amp MOSFET, where did you buy it? Do you have one more for sale? ...am I right in assuming that the MOSFET delivers pulsed voltage-current, and you just put it between two poles on a 200 Amp battery??

  • @herrenindustries8305

    How did you determine the optimal voltage, current and spark frequency for cutting the material? Does this change with different metals?

  • @Jkauppa
    @Jkauppa Před rokem +1

    how about succing in the coolant and purify it, not just push around the cut out material, unless you have a coolant purifier as the whole

    • @Jkauppa
      @Jkauppa Před rokem

      consider electro-forming for 3d prints for getting nice thick exact metal parts, even negative mold metal filling with electroforming

    Why dont you use ECM istead of EDM ? It´s a way less complex process and thus easier to archieve at home while basically archieving the same goal.

    • @EHDESIGNLABS
      @EHDESIGNLABS  Před rokem +1

      ECM looks cool! I've always thought wire EDM was the would be the coolest one to build though, I enjoy a challenge!

      @@EHDESIGNLABS It is but perhaps not the easiest and therefore most accessable and cheap solution. Cool stuff is cheap and works great =)

    Regarding those ball bearings... ideally (when in use) the balls shouldnt touch the races of the bearing, but ron on a thin film of grease - thats why the grease is in there.
    So if you get a decent ball bearing you will have shite electric contact.

    • @benargee
      @benargee Před rokem +2

      Yeah and arcing can damage the bearing too. Probably best to use some sort of contact brush against the wire.

    • @PiefacePete46
      @PiefacePete46 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@benargee : I can confirm that from the opposite point of view... I had a bearing that was munted because it got zapped by a rogue connection... there was not meant to be any current passing through it, but when the loose wire touched it... instant pitting! 🥴

    Hi The type of wire edm you made is a very expensive design. I bought a Chinese design machine that is a brilliant machine, and much cheaper to run. Its first advantage is the wire it uses its steel copper coated wire that's used over and over it can last for weeks with daily use.The wire is on a drum that changes direction, the drum and wire spins at a much faster speed than your design. the wire runs on pulley's and you don't need fancy pumps for the water tank it just use a thin stream of water on the wire, you don't cut in a water tank. Your spark is far to big you need a higher frequency.
