How To Be a Bartender - What Do Bars Look When Hiring a Bartender?
Your work ethic is very important you have to roll your sleeves up and get some work done .
So What if I decide to work for someone else?
I know for us here in Liquid Kitty we prefer to hire somebody’s who’s matches our personality then has a ton of experience, will train them the way we want them to work at our place there’s nothing worse than hiring somebody who’s got twenty years of experience to come here and work with us and they’re gonna tell us how we should run but they’re not wrong the way they do things isn’t the wrong way to do it it’s just different and for us it doesn’t work that’s not how we want to do it, so there’s no right or wrong way to do it but we prefer to train somebody our way and have somebody and have somebody open minded i’d love to find somebody bartenders experience know we finds knows behind the bars and goes you wanna do it that way? Sure! I’d love to find that but it’s really tough so we’re always eager to hire somebody who's new, who's smart, hardworking really easy going and who can listen and can absorb like information like a sponge. - Damian (Kitty Liquid)
I guess it’s kinda bolth, I just, we just hired actually a couple of guys as like passers had never been in a restaurant business at all but they have such amazing personalities and they’re good people and that’s the one you wanna trust that people back here, there’s thousand of dollars back here you don’t want some douche back here just pour out booz just give it away to people, even if he's a bartender or not. So we hire based on that and they’re doing a fantastic job but then I’d hire bartenders that have worked you know for years and then just suck! because they have this attitude like, oh I wanna have my own shifts and that doesn’t work that way, you gotta start from the bottom and you know eventually someone's gonna fall off and you we’re gonna move you right in there because it all seniority that just how it works, specially little places like our hotels that how it is. - Laura ( Louie’s on Main)
Well I havin back working in established bar and then switching over to the I guess you could say the private sector in bartending I’ve notice some essential things that I look for bartenders, traditionally when you work at the bar essentially a person’s gonna go in there not necessary for the the bartender you gather for the drinks the food the atmosphere when we do our vans the difference is that if we’re not very, very efficient and we don’t take care of our client hundred percent we’re never going to get our call back again, so my main things that I look for our in a bartender are that a person, first of all that they are personable that they are helpful, they can try to connect with our guest every client that we have in the invent, you have that big smile just have a positive attitude your ethics is very important you have to be able to roll your sleeves up and get some work done, obviously there’s knowledge aspects that I want our bartender would know, you need to know, you need to know how to make basic drinks, things that people tend to ask for and also you have to keep up with new emerging drink that as everybody knows there’s always a new drinks there’s always a new drink that’s hot in town and you have to know that, you have to keep up with that and I would say that’s the really main aspects but as I said above all ours is your attitude you have to have the right attitude, if you don’t have that, you lost the job already. - Luis (Shake em up)

You're lucky despite being a fun job you will not have to go through that gap in your young years. One thing I'll tell you is restaurant and bar enployees are most likely to become alcoholics. The job is both fun and stressful but it does change your life

I have been making and creating drinks for a while. Just have to learn a few common drinks. I'm good at it. I enjoy it. I'm thinking of interning at a bar where everyone knows and likes me. I know the game since I know the bartenders and learned how they got started.

By the way, for anyone wondering: a lot of places hire up from barback to bartender in house. This is done because it helps the person trying to move up be familiar with internal processes, gaining the trust of the bar manager and showing a good working rapport with others. It also helps obviously to get you familiar with the tools, etc.
    However.
It’s a fallacy to assume one could only be hired as a bartender if they’ve never bartended or barbacked. I think it’s unfair personally to people with excellent customer service skills that already have other full time work.
The bar industry is very unfair, unfortunately.

Having worked at Starbucks for a couple of years helped me become ambidextrous behind the bar. I also went to Bartending School and had a huge advantage when it came to speed and (not) spilling drinks. Not to mention you already have practice memorizing drink recipes. I was fortunate enough to have worked in a Starbucks within a hotel where I already had an excellent reputation as well as seniority. And now I am a bartender in the hotel's Sports Bar.
Short answer: Yes, it does count. Many people will agree that bartending is easier than being a barista.

I would love to works the weekends, but I already work at a place where I'm trying to get a bartending job. However, I need more hours, so I was wondering if any establishments would hire bartenders during the weekdays.
