    My problem, as I commented on the tweet, isn't a social justice side of things, it's the fact that Capcom have a nasty habit of making games less Japanese. For example, the Ace Attorney series where they did their damndest to Americanize it.
    They don't seem to understand that people like Japanese games, because they are Japanese. I have enough options when it comes to Western media, I partake of Japanese media because it ISN'T Western.

    **My Opinion** The problem is that when you give in to pressure to change your product, it will only escalate even more censorship. We had the ESRB created to give guidelines as pertaining to information about the product: problem solved. Now all content "inappropriate" falls on the parents to educate themselves on. When companies give in to the pressure of fringe groups, they lose creativity. I'm getting tired of companies giving in to these small groups screaming. Just make your game, if people like it, it'll sell. If people are offended, your game won't sell. Let the market determine the outcome.

  • @GregWampler
    @GregWampler Před měsícem +12

    Censorship is bad no matter what. That being said, there's a difference between the past where companies would simply change things thinking that people couldn't handle certain topics in certain regions and companies now saying "we're going to change things for a certain group of people to virtue signal." Especially when they group really isn't going to play your games anyway. When there's a forced ideological agenda that's industry-wide, it's never going to be okay. When community managers and dev employees say "white men suck" and then try and change characters to fit their issues, you have real problems.

    I'm against censorship in all its forms. Working in a library has taught me that in order to truly appreciate Freedom of Speech - and by extension Expression - we MUST allow ideas, perspectives, stories and images that some of us might find offensive. I understand the intent of wanting to make something that would be inclusive to all, but exclusion of expression is not inclusion. All games are not for everyone, just as with every other piece of entertainment media. Everything must be allowed to exist so that we as individuals may decide what is right for US.

    As someone who has been commissioned to write a script under contract, I feel I should say that we almost never have full creative control. We answer to the wants and feedback of three producers/directors etc. Those kinds of works projects only tend to occur if we are fortunate enough to also be the lead producer and/director. Ann example of that would be Kojima. He's enjoyed a lot of unfettered control, especially these days.
    Also, for those reasons, no outside consultant can ever force a creative team to do anything. They are hired to give advice on matters that team may not have experience in. Might a more corporate style consultantcy firm like SBI use aggressive sales tactics? Sure, but they still don't have the final word, just like the writers.

    I say f them both. Nothing should be changed for any group, harden the F up. I want things translated so i can read it, but i also want the cultural differences to remain, and that goes for all corners of the world, those differences are why we reach for a piece of media and how we can get inspired to create something new.

    While censorship was a thing back then (It's one reason I kept on with import gaming for decades), with retro games today, you got everything from fan translations, uncensored patches, and easy access to the vanilla uncensored versions via emulation. This is the reason people are going back to retro games. Not to mention today some games are being censored at the source as well at an alarming rate, while only a handful of retro games got this treatment back in the day (JP FF6 Advance is the most known example).

    The Konami localization team removed crosses from Castlevania because they thought it would offend Christians, it's literally the inverse of what is expected today. It would be nice if regulators around the world would view video games as fictitious entertainment that literally operate by different standards. A violent game where attacking opponents and killing hundreds of enemies cannot be viewed in the same lens as a world where this behavior is not acceptable, the same should go with other standards. No one is forcing someone to buy the game and feel like they were included in it, even if the main character can have different races, species, genders, and classes chosen which could possibly be more representative of the player outside the game. Nintendo made Link androgynous because they wanted players of both sexes to resonate with the character they're controlling, it helps sell games and consoles, potentially. A developer can take measures to appeal to different groups of people but they shouldn't be obligated or forced to do so if they want to sell their game. Whatever a developer chooses to do should solely be at their discretion, the problem is that regulatory bodies in the EU, for instance, think that games must represent certain groups that they feel don't get full representation in all areas of the market. People have the right to boycott just about anything they feel don't represent their values or group they claim to represent but this should always be at the discretion of the developer if they choose to be more inclusive and for what reason as well. Konami excluding crosses from graves meant to take place in Europe hundreds of years ago would likely be considered offensive if Christians were not still a small majority in that region but people did not boycott their games and regulatory bodies were not insisting they be more inclusive when representing European gravestones. Censorship will certainly always play a role in society but when it comes to video games it should on how it's rated and the realistic portrayal of certain abuses that should be the only instances that may induce government intervention, sadly, it's not the world we live in.

    Localization had absolutely nothing to do with changing the message or core material to 'fit' a certain culture's sensitivities. Why would that had even been a thing in the past? It wasn't bc anime and manga are a JAPANESE product for JAPANANESE people. No, localization always had everything to do with the translation part and most accurately relaying the message of the source material in the target language. This gaslighting that localization has always had something to do with changing the core material is a new approach that's being used to force the cultural norms of other countries onto Japanese creators' work. If you support Japanese creators, reject their attempt to take control and manipulate Japanese creatives.

    Look I hear it, localization changes should be minimal because you are outright changing the source material and when I buy a game I'm expecting it to be like the source material from Japan, just in English. However, censoring certain things for an international release just kind of makes sense, some cultures are very different to ours. Even Nintendo is guilty of this, Mario Party 8 had it's European release updated because of a part of the game where Kamek says "spastic". Turns out spastic in parts of Europe is considered a pretty hateful word, and people began complaining to Nintendo and returning copies. Sometimes changing things for cultural norms is necessary to make a game that isn't unintentionally hateful. I hate the word 'offensive' because of the whole 'woke movement' stuff, since they use it so much, but yeah if there were imagery of the KKK in Final Fantasy 7 in Japan, I think it's reasonable they would remove it from a worldwide release (this isn't true btw, just thought it made a good example). Now changing unnecessary things for the sake of inclusivity, that is where I draw the line. These are videogames, they already appeal to everyone. When I play Spiderman: Miles Morales I don't get mad because the main character is black and American, and I'm a white Canadian, I just play Spiderman because it's fucking Spiderman and God damnit I want to play Spiderman and have a jolly old time. Making games more inclusive is a waste of time and resources, and in the end you'll make more enemies than you will new customers. I'm not sure whose looking at Mega Man and asking "please Capcom, make an African American robot!", Mostly because there is nobody doing that. Also, I'm not sure where any of this is even coming from, remember Capcom is the same game that made Resident Evil 4, RE4 Remake and 5, both games 'woke people' like to claim are racist, so for them to then say "we are trying to be inclusive and change things to match cultures", I'm not really seeing it.

The issue that is what youre not seeing is how much control they are having and how other stuff they are pushing for their personal purpose. Capcom have changed a lot, if iis the worse of all like in the west? Not at all, at least for now, however you can see latley in their games how they are censoring more, even stuff that we could see on international releases in the past. The biggest problem is the people that are on those departments, if we the consumer let them do it and say is ok the more they will continue destroying games, especially now that companies get money for following those changes. I know where youre coming from but, but if you dont want to see Capcom turn into a Disney we need to let them hear us.

    Yes, I do agree that in corporate structure, the localizer would not have that kind of power. However, the tweet is expressing something else. Based on the tweet, they do have the power to change certain content of the games in order to adapt it to the "environment" the target language is in. Therefore, there are two posibilities: one is the tweet is exagerating their role to make themselves more important than reality or the other is the Capcom localizer have a different structure than the company you chatted with. Since the Capcom localizers are an in-house team, it is more likey than not that they have more power than a contractor company could have.
