- Although this is the WiiWare version, this is how you accomplish an S-Rank on Cave Story+ boss rush mode. What's done here can be done on the Steam version too.
That's it, I'm done. I don't think I can possibly top this record, this went so damn well. I was especially lucky to defeat Puu Black before he leapt up.
Mistakes were very minimal in this run, and if they were made, they were mostly outside of boss fights.
Oh by the way, that random sound at the end of the Rabid Toroko fight? That was my email.

I laughed so hard at the Doctor battle. It only took 4 seconds from the time the health bar appeared.

JumboDS64 This was emulated with an older version of Dolphin Emulator.
These days, I would've played the Steam version, Cave Story+ instead.

Seems right to me.
RupeeClock I think the normal core is harder then the undead core because it took me one try to beat the undead core and about 3 times to beat the normal core.
now try them on hard mode

SuperNimi35 I think third form Ballos is the easiest boss to defeat, it takes one hit to get him down if you just sit on his eye with the Spurr and so xD.

Actually beat it mind you, including going into hell and beating Ballos at the end for the true ending.
You know when in Ballos' eyes with blade lv2 you can face away from him so both the blade and nemesis shots hit
right

my strategy beating the core and balrog 1st time
balrog : let him follow you in a corner he wont be able to hit you at all
the core : go to the right side wall the core will go to the wall keep spamming the snake
notes : the core trick will only work if you got the snake
and be careful not to drown (that nearly happened to me)

I thought it was the game, I thought that was the sound of moving on through the areas.
There's a small amount of self-preservation necessary to get a good run in, but for the most part it's fine to take damage so you can focus on blasting through everything.
Against Balfrog, taking damage saves a lot of time. When you're standing next to something to spam fireballs, that's also okay since fireballs don't reduce in damage when they level down.
Taking a hit from the third Balrog fight however can actually waste a lot of time since he grabs you and then throws you, immobilising you

This was before Cave Story+ came out with the S-rank requirement being under 8 minutes, so I was pleasantly surprised.
@psychicken17 It's not tool assisted, I just practiced hard. :)
See there are still a few mistakes in the video, and if it were tool assisted I'd probably be able to skip picking up things like the bubbler.
Like at 1:40, I accidentally jumped before entering the door. If this were TAS, that would have been rerecorded.
Do you ever wonder why Running hell plays for half a second on Igor? It's a lot more noticeable with Wii music, since there's a pause.
@psychicken17 Not at all, it's probably loading a new music track into memory, one that is single audio file rather than playing like MIDI.
this is cave story+, it came out very recently, the original game was pixelated
@iambored2006 Yes, you have to clear the best ending to unlock this mode.
You can shoot out more super/missiles once the last load you fired have all hit something, so close range lets you spam them for maximum damage.
The knife is just... the best weapon for Monster X. It rapes that thing with no trouble at all.
Duh, the boss fight itself is a reference to Ikachan.
Ikachan appears if you defeat Ironhead without taking damage, simple as.
You also get the Alien Medal if you're playing the usual game.

No, actually I recorded this video in 2011 when Cave Story+ was not yet released on PC.
@Ortadragon01 Missiles probably do the job faster in this case, their damage output is far greater.
If I'm not using missiles on a boss there's a good reason for it.

They're just very happy looking bats, and I am certain Cave Story pre-dates the creation of Awesome Face.
He's able to do way more damage to Omega than I can on Cave Story+ before it digs down each time.
I really like what ballos did to his room.
Monster X tends to close back up whenever you've depleted a third of its health, I am not sure but I think level 2 blade ends up being preferable for him at all points.
Yes but the original version would've had those happy bat creatures as well.
Cave Story WiiWare (in this video) had updated graphics but are effectively the same visuals anyway, save for some colour changes like Misery's hair in portrait or the Booster 2.0 for some reason.

You know, I'd say you were crap at dodging, but I think it's more you just didn't CARE about it. I mean, seriously, when you can fire that fast and aim that well, who needs to dodge? And about that aiming, shooting bouncing Ballos in the eye with the spur? Really? Amazing, just amazing.
@gigax571 Oh yeah, unfortunately that just seems to be a problem with the emulation.
It's that, or put up with irritating long pauses when it switches music.
I've done it but I haven't recorded it.
It was included in Cave Story+ but not the WiiWare version you see here.

Didn't, this is the WiiWare titles emulated using Dolphin.
Not true, in the main game you can stay in the first cave area and keep killing enemies until you get level 3 Polar Star.
Just keep entering/exiting the save room.
How much did you have to practice to get this? I really want the achievement but not if it's going to take 20 hours to do.
It's more complicated than that; you have to get the WAD file for it to play on Dolphin.
This was emulated on Dolphin, it doesn't do a great job of the music for some reason.
I would rather play this using the original soundtrack than the new one, but there are long pauses whenever another song is loaded if you use original, so that's a no go.
If you're past the first cave already I would just get on with fighting Balrog with whatever level Polar Star you have.
He's a completely easy boss fight anyway and isn't even mandatory.
I mean the gravekeeper guy being the only source of exp crystals before Balrog, don't waste your time.

I should try that tactic: spam rockets so fast [I think you did it with a script] that the enemy dies before he can even shoot at you.

More or less, I used my homebrew enabled wii to extract the WAD file for Cave Story that I bought, and loaded it on my PC with Dolphin.
You can also keep killing the gravekeeper guys in the cemetery, too.
Do you have to complete hell in order to unlock this mode?
Also, how do you manage to shoot so many rockets?

This is technically the Wii Ware version, and because I was emulating this on Dolphin, it was better performance-wise to play with the "New" soundtrack instead of the "Original" soundtrack.
Cave Story+ on PC offers a third soundtrack option, "Remastered" which is much better than the "New" one. The "New" one is definitely my least favourite of the three.

How do you beat Puu Black in one round? It's very rare when I attempt it.
To be honest I just got lucky during this particular attempt, I rarely pull it off too.
I believe it depends on which ways the super missiles fire and the pattern is slightly random when firing, but only in a way that matters at close range.

btw the first boss fight in this video doesen't help that much due to you only being able to get lvl 2 Polar Star before the fight
