Questlove is one of the most outstanding personalities when it comes to talking about R'n'B and Hip Hop musicians. Besides his famous work with his band The Roots and as musical director at Jimmy Fallon's late night shows, his credit list is immense and his working fields besides music include movies, tv shows and releasing multiple books as an author. 6 Grammy awards and even one Oscar give an idea of how influential his work is.
It's about time to add the outstanding drum sound of Questlove to our Recreating Iconic Drum Sounds series.

Pascal is legend
Agree 😎
I got a message from you saying I won something??? It's in my notifications and I assume there's a strong possibility it's a scam
A Tim Alexander (primus) drum sound would be amazing! He is a seriously underrated rock drummer!
Yes!
I second that!
I agree!
Agreed. Herb is amazing and his sound on Sailing the Seas of Cheese is incredible.
That's herb...herb the ginseng drummer...3, 4!
I love Questlove's drumming. It's always so tasteful and simple, but has a great feel. He never tries to show off or take the spotlight, but always plays what fits the song
Questlove was the first drummer who’s drum sound I fell in love with
The accuracy of this is incredible. You guys are excellent!
i just liked his musicality, obvious joy
and appearance in the showband.
did not know more about him
...
thank you for the video
What a work!!! You really capture de sound of Quest Love, kudos for you hardworking and explaining the details and the steps for learning a have fun to play this. Thanks and good vibes,, salute from Barranquilla, Atlántico/ Colombia 👍👏🤟
Tanks Jose!
Knocked another one out of the park, boys. I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for the time and effort y'all put into these.
Questlove is A beast in a lot things especially his talent as Drummer, and producer as well! Good job on re-creating his “ Drum Sound” !!!
💯
These videos are so amazing! Thank you.
Wow!! Nice playing!! I'm glad you made this video
Met Questlove at the Apple store I worked at years ago. Such a nice human being!
Yes!!!! I've been waiting for this one!!!
The Shure mic in the Center to glue the individual Sound together is a game changer to me. Still learning something new. Thx. Awesome Video.
Awesome!! Quest Rips
Great sound,Tone and feel ✌️
Quest started on the scene with a 26" bass drum and a piccolo (3.5-4" depth by 14") snare. The little drums are more for working/busking in big cities like NYC.
The snare sound on the first track is near identical, so cool.
Nicely done on questlove . You got me is an amazing drum recording & one of my favorite snare sounds. How about dap king drum sound?
Excellent work gents!
cool drum set !!! thanks for your videos
Thanks for your feedback!!!
Love this!
Does every drummer have that rug? 😂 Great tones man. ❤️
Love it when he goes into amen break during the end of you got me...
NAILED IT.
cool how the kick is in tune with the bassline in the seed. It like almost as one part
Nailed it!
Those sound great, especially for their sizes
Grt vid. Love t cadence of t hi hat.🍻✌️
Request! Replicate Herbie Hancock's drum sound. From the traditional jazzy cantaloupe island to the dry funky chameleon :)
Thank for the request!
@@ArtOfDrumming thanks for the thanks 😄
@@jooeleng 😉
The drum sounds came from Tony Williams (Cantaloupe Island) and Harvey Mason (Chameleon). Both legends would deserve their own episode on this channel.
great content dude
Awesome video!
Thank You!
Excellent
Fantastisch ✌🏻
Excelente!!
i love the drum sound
On Point!!!!
Do vinnie colaiuta’s full drum kit. I love what you did in the seven days snare. Much love from the Philippines. ❤️
Already on our list ;-)
Oooh I was really hoping to see one of his songs off of Voodoo on here. Could we see this in the future?
Chicken grease
Love this. Ian Paice some day?
Great vid
I wanted this to go on and on!! More!! Lol 🤣
MORE HIP HOP DRUMING PLEASE!!
I think you should do the Jimi Hendrix drum sound.
Cool Idea - thanks!
Could barely hear it lol
@@CD-gk9ix take a listen to “Fire” by Jimi Hendrix. The drums are very present.
@@davidddrums correct.. that’s one song
Anything else?
@@CD-gk9ix purple haze, hey joe, little wing
Props to David Ivory and Jon Smeltz, the Roots’ engineers. But, the drums on the original recordings have nothing to do with the small kit ?uestlove now offers. If you look at his current live kit or pictures of them in the studio back then you see that he plays a larger, more standard sized kit.
Not true.
I’d love to see you guys do Matt halperns sound from periphery
Do you know the mic-pre and compressor he use or what did you use to record the drum sounds
thanks
I think Luke Holland‘s drum sound has influenced many drummers on the internet and would make for an interesting and informative video!
Great Idea - Thanks!
Very informative thanks....What about the sounds on Vodoo and Mama's gun....
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A muse's drum sound video would be great!!
Please have a look here: czcams.com/video/hNaQpoLAzL8/video.html
❤hell yeah
These videos really do show up Andertons' "Sounds Like" series. They don't even try and get remotely close... The Neil Peart video was just a big drumkit. Everyone complained in the comments.
The drum sound on the album Point of Entry by Judas Priest would be great to hear!
Please do a drum feature on Earl Hudson from Bad Brains. Awesome high hat.
❤
How’d you tune reso snare head for this?
I remember Quest saying he's always used Vic Firth 7A sticks. It starts with the stick
he has his signature sticks as well. really long, thin ones I think 17”
😎👏🏽
Nice hat sound.
Can you do Bill Ward from black sabbath?
Can you guys recreate queensryche - empire and guns n roses use your illusion sound?
What did they put in the 16” bass?
Questlove almost never plays rimshots? It sounds to me like he does. And like someone else said, on all these classic tracks he played a standard sized kit with a cranked, often ringy snare. A big part of the sound is the retro recording, with fewer mics and valve style processing (mic/pres and compressors).
where i can find the samples of this drums ?
Please do Scott Rockenfield next please!
Harvey Mason Drum Sound would be great he‘s a pretty awesome drummer
what is that cymbals stand/rack u use for storage ? thanks
Those are actually just some regular guitar stands on top of some wooden boxes 👍
Gavin Harrison, Tim Alexander, Danny Carey, Carter Beauford, Adam Deitch..
👌🏽
Maybe one day we'll see the recreation of the famous Alex van halen snare🤔
Oh I guess only the snare won‘t be enough. Don‘t know when but we will surely add a Van Halen video to this series at some point 👍
@@ArtOfDrumming LETS GO! Love to hear it. You guys rock! 🤘
can you plz do billy talent drummer Aaron Solowoniuk plz he is so underrated so is the band
Please do Danny Carey and Ray Luzier. I've never see anyone do Ray.
I love his snare sound I’m really surprised you were able to get that sound out of such a cheap drum. Why am I playing 800 dollars snares????
Do Davd King!!!!!
What is the song of the intro ?
I think the snare is pitched a bit higher on the original Erica Badu song
Don Henley drum sound please!!!
Dang we're not gonna do that weird stack used in Jimmy fallon kit?
Request: Try to replicate Simon Phillips' drum sound! From Toto over Protocol to The Who, Judas Priest, Derek Sherinian & Michael Schenker… The Man is an absolute legend! (But getting a drum set like his signature kit could be quite a challenge…)
Mitch Mitchell would be awesome
A little too muted for "you got me" with the kick. For me. But amazing work man.
Questo uses 14" Quick beats hats brother, the FX Crash was right, & he uses a 24" K Light Ride homie
Can't get that sound without tape and vari-mu compression
Questlove doesn't play rim shots?
I will proudly and confidently say if anybody knows Questlove sound other than Questlove it's me and it is obvious these guys were on point with recreating the sound and using the correct mics and recording technique! From Philly and was introduced to The Roots in 1993 and trust me it was not cool to be a fan of Questlove for many years even after their fourth album came out! Those who know what's up realized that Questlove was phenomenal and had one of the best drum sound ever at that point but almost no one was naming him their favorite drummer and you would almost get laughed at if you brought his name up 😂 luckily that rightfully changed and the guy has a drum set named after him.
Stan lynch👉👈
Wurstmic!
Hilarious!
A video about his drumming without even mentioning his otherworldly contribution to Fiona Apple's song "Not About Love" feels wrong.
Why do you spoiler everything at the beginning of the video?!?!?
Now you just got to work on your fro. It needs to be way puffier.
I could think of many other drummers that you should do before this guy sorry.
The most overrated drummer.
Amir Thompson!!!….
the most overrated drummer with just a lot of hype!!!👎🏼
Still better than you.
You sound extremely salty. I'm sure whining some more will improve your musical skill.
@@ricardoconqueso Haha!!…better at bullshitting his way through everything!!!your right!!!!
I'm trying hard here but Questlove is so overrated it's unbelievable.
What makes you say that?
Trying hard to what? Sound as butthurt as possible?
I remember hearing Things Fall Apart when it came out and being really surprised that it was a drum kit and not a drum machine. I think over the years his desire to improve as a musician has been hampered by his other obligations; DJing, producing, and loads of TV, but he is kind of the Godfather of the modern hip-hop, breakbeat style drummer. Other players like Chris Dave and Anderson Paak have taken it much further, but before Questlove hip-hop rarely had a live drummer. Obviously, he is drawing a lot from Clyde Stubblefield and James Gadson, but with a very modern twist and very different production. I think his strengths are his minimalism, his arrangement of the grooves, his unbelievable consistency, his willingness to play for the song, and his amazing tone. Not all drummers are flashy but if you love The Roots' music you will know what he brings. If not, it might seem like he's not doing much.
