In 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved. After butting heads with the United States for over four decades in proxy wars and crises around the globe, the Communist state had found itself besieged by a mixture of economic stagnation and social unrest, and decided that a brighter future awaited it as a democratic nation.
It was a quiet end to a conflict many had believed for years was going to culminate in a nuclear tempest that would have torn the world asunder. But what if history had gone differently? What if the Soviet Union had refused to go quietly into the night, and made one last ditch attempt to conquer the rest of the world on the eve of its demise? This was the premise of World in Conflict. A real-time strategy game conceived by Swedish developer Massive Entertainment, World in Conflict tasked players with defending the United States and Europe from a surprise Soviet Invasion in 1989.
Compared to the likes of Command & Conquer, which had depicted the Cold War turned Hot with a high degree of fantasy in years prior, Massive’s strategy title offered a largely grounded experience; one that depicted both its combatants and their battlefields with enough realism to make their plights feel genuinely sympathetic. Yet where it truly set itself apart from its competitors was its gameplay, which mixed together tried-and-true real-time strategy mechanics with some of the most distinctive elements of shooters like Battlefield to spectacular effect. So much so, that diehard fans would continue to steadfastly support it well after its creators - and its original online infrastructure - would move on.
This is the history of World in Conflict.

you needed a team that pooled points early on to you, so that you could call in a tripple nuke. but not all three at once, the first on the enemy stong point, 10 second wait time, then the enemy spawn and after another 10 seconds the next on the spawn, to delay their reenforcements haha. man that game was a blast solo and multiplayer alike.

Man what a coincidence I recently started replaying this on GoG. I still think this is one of the best RTS' ever made, not to mention one of the best campaigns. Alec Baldwin is great as the narrator and the rest of the voice cast is brilliant. Used to play the hell out of multiplayer with friends in high school. With the improvements in graphics and physics, I think a sequel would be amazing, but I don't know if that will ever happen. Least the first game is still widely available digitally.

I really appreciated this video in particular as a former World in Conflict player and an occasional dweller on its online community, Massgate. Nostalgia aside, I do believe that with further research into the game's post-launch period, there could have been more elaborate developments on the multiplayer metagame, with its specificities and issues. The MP required a completely different way to play compared to single player, with a really high learning curve and focus on micro and teamwork synergy. While there were guides and basic tips exchanged in the official forum, I don't remember an effort from the devs to endorse some of these guides and tips and make sure all players got to see them, and the quality of public play suffered from it and led to the game's overall decline.
The clan wars metagame could have also been mentioned, especially regarding how this faster-paced (matches were often way smaller than 8v8) and more competitive gameplay mode distinguished itself from the more standard gameplay modes amongst more veteran members of the community. This could have perhaps tied well with the video's overall focus on the similarities to FPSes.
It would have also been nice to go into more detail on custom content, like the cinematic editor released by Massive which allowed you to set up camera paths and create in-game cinematic videos in the style of previous trailers. On the modding side, a shoutout to blahdy's Modern Warfare mod, a comprehensive modification of the game that besides updating to a contemporary setting with new units, experiments with completely new realistic mechanics such as networked anti-air and control over helicopters' altitude, would have been neat as well, but it's understandable a GVMERS vid wouldn't go *that deep*.
It was a good trip down memory lane, nonetheless. Maybe other regular (and actually skilled) players will find the occasion to comment on their experience with this ambitious game, whether previous or current (I don't know anything about the post-Massgate metagame and community).

Multiplayer is normally something I don't play often in an RTS but world in conflic had the best MP ever made for an RTS it was breath taking at the time really did make you feel like you were fighting world war 3. 8 vs 8 choosing your role was the best idea they could've came up with and iv'e not played a game like it or as good since. i came back to the game after the recent "events" still a great game, i suppose with the benefit of hindsight the idea of the soviet military being equivalent to the US and NATO now sounds completely ridiculous given their performance in ukraine, however some aspects of the game sounds eerily prophetic, see at the start of every cutscene for the soviet missions you get a propaganda reel from the soviet government, it sounds almost word for word exactly like russian propaganda today, always escalating the situation (ingame the war starts as a last gambit by the soviets to avoid collapse, their economy was crumbling and the west didnt want to help), always blaming everyone but themselves for their own aggression and hiding their failures in the field
you go to the RT youtube channel and its full of putin speeches justifying the war, saying its all NATO's fault, you will get practically no negative coverage of the war, only ukranian "atrocities" and sovie-i mean russian victories, none of those columns upon columns of smoking russian vehicles we see in social media posted by ukranians themselves, apparently the war is going amazingly for russia, and yet for some reason they remain bogged down
