Can I cross Wales BY BUS in a day?

  • Wales is a country the size of Wales, so this makes it ideal for a quick public transport challenge. Can Uncle Turtle and I travel from the country's most southerly bus stop to the most northerly one before the buses run out for the night?

      Like to know does Wales have preserved Roman remains , now in Spain have seen that my former Colne Chester has been completely ruined , the council are still constantly building hundreds of tight packed houses on the finest yet discovered Roman chariot race Arena , if the say yes , an E.U representative should arrive & declare it illegal , the house of thieves is preserved why not this wonder , in Spain many Roman aqueducts still in use , not bad for no cement 2,500 years !

    This channel deserves so much more attention than it currently garners. It hits the sweet spot where completely pointless journeys are rigorously researched, planned and undertaken, to be described in a beautifully written and perfectly delivered script. Oh, and the editing is so good that one hardly notices that it has been done. The line "Wales is famously a country the size of Wales" is worth the price of admission alone and the brief tribute to the Aberfan disaster, very touching. Chapeau!

    Thanks for all your bus travel vlogs. I got my English Senior bus pass in the middle of our UK lockdowns so my daughter said I am trying to wear it out now! I took her at her word in July. Can’t use it in either Scotland or Wales so John o’Groats was out. Which means, that leaves Lands End then from the Northeast of England. Likewise, I now know the amount of planning involved to make these journeys happen. It took 27 buses 534 miles and 3 and a half days just using £2 tickets and my pass. The most amazing part of the journey was that 20 of those buses were double-deckers. The longest continuous run were 9 buses from Northampton to Plymouth in Devon.
    Keep up the good work I look forward to your next journey.

      @timothyduncan3457 Před 10 měsíci +6

      @@Robutube1 Hi Rob, In order to get going I needed to start on all 3 days before 09:30 so I took the standard approach of saying to the driver I don't suppose this will work, will it?
      On my first bus from home it was "It's before 09:30 so it's 30p to you concession pass holders". Day 2 out of Leicester I knew it wouldn't do anything on the 06:35 X7 to Northampton, so that one was £2 and the next bus was 0856 X6 to Milton Keynes which was the same. On day 3, I did the same on the 07:33 29 from Glastonbury to Taunton and it was the £2 fare please. The driver on the 09:00 X22 to Tiverton did say "hang on I'II check for you, because on one or two of our routes they're valid after 9" unfortunately this wasn't one of them.
      I would suggest that you always give it a try in a jovial way as some authorities routes it will work after 9 and on a few all day.
      But a word of warning it's a lot of planning and you need an escape plan too, just in case it all goes wrong. I always had a backup way to make sure I could get to my prebooked Travelodges which were just around the corner from a bus stop!
      Timothy

      @@timothyduncan3457 What a great and helpful reply Timothy - thanks for taking the time to write it! The planning is part of the fun of course, but you're cautionary advice about back-up plans is well taken. Foolishly, I hadn't thought about the '0930 rule' but I'm encouraged by the fact that the pass works on X-services which I didn't know before. £2 is an absolute bargain anyway when it has to be paid. Thanks again.

    Many thanks for that. A great vlog showing the beauty of Wales.
    Sadly it also shows what a transport infrastructure wasteland we have . Over 14 hours to do what is probably less than 130 miles as the crow flies. Plus you had to travel via England. We all laugh in Swansea when we hear Radio Wales tell us of traffic hotspots in Holyhead. They might as well we talking about Dover as it easier to get to. We have inadequate buses, very few railway lines, yet the Welsh Govt deem a 20 mph default limit necessary for the only realistic alternative. Namely the car. If Wales is to retain its green credentials then massive infrastructure investment is needed and not just in Cardiff an its environs.
    Still, I really enjoyed this. thanks again🙂

      @travelling_turtle  Před 9 měsíci +6

      Delighted you enjoyed it, many thanks!
      Without disagreeing with your very valid points about the need for transport infrastructure investment, I would say that local buses aren’t ever going to be time-competitive on a journey like this: it is solely a silly challenge for myself. While the trains should undeniably be faster, it would have taken about a third of the time of doing it by bus! Though unlike the train, I *could* have done the bus journey entirely within Wales in exactly the same time window as I did - changing at either Llandrindod or Newtown and heading over to Machynlleth - just my personal choice to take the route via Oswestry. And I would say that many parts of England with equivalent population densities would murder for as frequent and integrated a service as the TrawsCymru routes… 😉

    • @leightongoss6147
      @leightongoss6147 Před 9 měsíci +1

      All fair points. It is possible to do the trip in about 5 hours by car if you avoid tractors but the roads are unsafe. Railways are non existent North to South so a trip North always leads to Shrewsbury or Crewe. It is frustration for many of is in Wales that the nation is effectively divided by its lack of transport infrastructure. You would be hard pressed to find anywhere as bad within the EU. Sadly any investment in that direction has now gone. @@travelling_turtle

    Great video. I travel on the T4 quite often. I always like the contrast between the way the bus threads its way through narrow streets of the towns, and then turns into an express for the fast runs between them. On the twisty-turny A470 approaching Builth Wells, where the road is tucked into the side of the hill above the river Wye, and you look down (and down, and down) at the foaming water, there are places where it could all get a bit Italian Job if the driver missed his line through the bend. At Llandrindod there's a glimpse of a red bus - the 461 to Hereford. That's an interesting route, criss-crossing the Welsh border several times, calling at Weobley and Evenjobb, picturesque places with names that sound like they were invented for a comic novel. If you ever do an east-west trip, I recommend going that way.

    • @travelling_turtle
      @travelling_turtle  Před 10 měsíci +3

    Gongoozlers: a word i learned watching rosemary and thyme and has the walesborn Gareth David Lloyd who played in torchwood *i really adore this part of the journey* But the music, the attention to detail, the research, the pronounciation of the cities/places/buildings and the humor *john redwood/horrible histories* and of course the love for a crocheted turtle makes this channel a joy to watch.

    Brilliant video. Lovely to see the Chirk Aqueduct again, we were there just a few weeks ago on a narrowboat. Sadly Wales is not on my journey planner at the moment for my inaugural bus pass trip later in the year because each UK country issues their own bus pass, rather negating the purpose of my journey!

    Enjoyed that having grown up as a kid in Barry and now living near Wrexham. Using the T4 & T10 regularly to Ogwen Cottage and Barmouth, The connections are usually good in Corwen and Dollgellau. Planning on going to Cardiff shortly, via Aberystwyth to try the electric buses between Aberystwyh and Carmarthen.
    Also been using the 62 on Ynys Mon a lot recently as manage different sections of the coast path.

      That’s great - I was astonished to hear that a route as long and rural as Aber to Carmarthen is now fully electric: fantastic that is now feasible. We also employed the 62 to do some very nice coastal walks after I got to Ynys Môn - rare to find somewhere you can do a country walk by bus on a Sunday!

    Canal! I live near a lovely canal, and they've become something of a passion in the last few years. I can't imagine a canal boat trip being involved in any of these challenges! ;) But if canal scenery offers equisite little passages, roadside scenery often offers broad vistas of a type rarely possible on a canal. Whatever your mode of transport, Jo, your commentary is delightful!
