Honestly same. I know the low budget forced them to use shaky cam and tight angles to make the puppets seem alive, but I'd be interested in a version of the film where we just see nick cage beat up obvious puppets being swung by adult men at him
I love how willy has respect for his opponent. The others jump on him to eat him alive, not caring about if he's ready or not. Willy here wants him dead, but he still let the janitor walk towoards him before attacking. He want to make sure if he's here to fight him pr flee.

There's only so much you can do with Animatronics without looking too stupid. They were almost there in this movie, but kept it discreet enough to not be goofy.
