EV TL806 1x12 Thiele ported cab demo

- When EV designed the EVM12L 12" speaker they made an open source 1x12 cabinet design especially for this speaker which they called the TL806.
Last year we made a shoot out video of the 12L and Black label speakers but were asked if we could do a demo with some heavier tones. Although this isn't a shoot out video it does contain some heavier, more chuggy playing so you can see how it handles heavier playing styles and sounds, as well as cleaner high head room sounds.
The nice thing about this cab is that for such a small cab it doesn't sound boxy and gives a nice amount of low end, as well as a nice amount of open-ness. It is a very dynamic cab with plenty of vibe and personality.

now I get why Mesa ran them in some of the Old 1x12 combos this is probably the best sounding 1x12 i ever heard
They are really cool speakers in a really nice cab. We used a Tul mic to record this time rather than an SM57 and I think that helps capture a little something else too. I'm glad you like the video.

How do they compare to a V30 in this cab and video they sound like a really good vintage 30.
So now I'm interested in how the would sound in a oversized 4x12 situation.
I'm still searching for an oversized 4x12 with a mid bump to balance put the scoop to get it a little more neutral
@@DarkItachi1 Technically you would only want to put a 12L in this cab as that is what it was designed for, but I have heard V30s work well in them. Are you asking how the 12L sounds in a 412? It sounds awesome but it could reak your back as they are so heavy. I would imagine a cab like that coming at over 60kg

And he has that oversized mesa with v30s that has so much more mids than every other oversized 4x12 I have heard.
And I'm trying to figure out how to get something like that. Without buying his cab when he has an unfortunate accident :).

Thank you for doing this review. Every speaker cabinet has its own particular nuanced tone. You guys do an excellent job of educating all of us as to the musical differences available. Bravo!

That sounds amazing. The clean and moderate sounds are great. The chug isn't as aggressive as some, but it's good enough for most live situations. Have you notice that speakers sound better when you're not A/B-ing them? I think the mind has a tendency to focus on the bandwidths that are different between speakers rather than the overall effect. Don't get me wrong. I still like the A/B videos, but that one was great. And you can afford a speaker like that if you're only getting one of them!
Yeah I think A?B tests aren't all that fair most of the time. I often listen to them and think in the room a certain speaker not necessarily sounds different but has a different feel if that makes sense. You would also tweek sounds normally but in A?B test you have to keep the sounds very similar to be fair... almost making it less of a fair test.
I'm not sure if it makes sense to close-mike the speaker if you're looking to see what the *cabinet* will do. There's a port on that cabinet that changes the sound from an ordinary close-miked EVM-12L
That's partly true, having the ports there do also change how the speaker acts but you are right, to get the full affect having in room mics too would be best.

Not an expert, but it seems that's the best the EVM 12L has sounded in your recordings. Compared to other videos, do you think it was a different choice of pedals, mic, pickups that added richness and breakup, or the cab? Zilla is building this cab?
I have the EV SRO 12L which is the Ceramic, I think very similar to EVM 12L, thinking it might sound equally amazing.
Thanks. Part of that would be the Tul mic really seemed to work well with this set up, but the studio setup we have now is that bit better. We do make the TL806 cabs, they are technically a custom order but we make them on a regular enough basis.

what speaker is in the cab ?
If someone was going to have a pair of these types of cabs, would you suggest both have the EV's or is there another speaker you'd recommend for the second cab? Tones in the vid sound great BTW.
Thanks, glad you like it. This cab was designed for the EVM12L so I'd just stick with that speaker in this cab. If mixing a different speaker in with the EV though I would go for separate cabs as the EV can sometimes overpower other speakers.

Thanks Vladimir. We could load them in there. Ported cabs are usually designed with specific speaker in mind, so it may not be ideal. That said it is always worth a try and see what happens.
