  • "Brüder, ergreift die Gewehre" (Brothers, take up the rifles) is a German communist song originating from the Roter Frontkämpferbund in 1928. It was composed by Helmut Nier and performed here by the Erich-Weinert-Ensemble in 1975.
    Brüder, ergreift die Gewehre!
    Auf zur entscheidenden Schlacht!
    Sollten denn unsere Heere
    Fürchten das Trugbild der Macht?
    Die wir dem Elend entstammen,
    Brüder aus Armut und Qual,
    Brennen im Kampfe zusammen,
    Werden geschliffener Stahl.
Uns aus dem Elend zu lösen,
    Ballt die bewaffnete Faust,
    Das auf die zitternden Größen
    Sie wie ein Blitz niedersaust.
Ihnen war Macht und war Ehre,
    Wir sind vor Hunger verreckt.
    Ladet die blanken Gewehre,
    Das Bajonett aufgesteckt!
    Auf, und verjagt die Tyrannen,
    Daß ihre Herrschaft zerfällt!
    Schmückt mit den blutroten Fahnen
    Unsere Arbeiterwelt!

As a native speaker of German and near-native of English, I would've rather translated "ladet die blanken Gewehre" as "load the/your empty rifles."
"blank" can colloquially mean that something's empty. For example, "Ich bin blank" means "I'm broke", as in, having an empty wallet.
Either way, this song's a good find! Quite catchy.

Hearing the song I was like "I thought german revolutionnaries were pacifist". And then I saw 1928 and it made sense. Maybe if the KPD hadnt been so naive and hasty in 1919, germany would have taken a completely different path.

To be fair, one part of the historical truth is also that the whole state and justice system was on the far right. They were very strictly persecuting even minor crimes and offenses from the extreme left, while they allowed the far right to do practically whatever they want. In a fair democratic system, Hitler would have surely received a greater punishment than 9 months of prison for litterally trying to overthrow the government. I somewhat understand that in such a pro fascist state apparatus, they tended to see violence as the only way out.
